Don Sayers, Niwot resident and artist, was awarded Best of Show at the Colorado Watercolor Society 2012 State Watermedia Exhibit.
Micheon Oklar, of the Colorado Watercolor Society said, “This was one of the best watercolor shows I’ve ever seen. It is a great honor to be selected Best of Show.” Many of the artists at the show were nationally recognized. Over 500
Colorado artists entered the juried exhibit and only 90 pieces were chosen to compete.
Sayers said, “This particular piece took me about four hours to complete.” The woman in the painting, a barista and art student, worked at Barnes & Noble in Boulder. She agreed to be photographed by Sayers in Boulder’s Chautauqua Park.
That photo turned into the Spanish-influenced” painting “Vaquera.”
As to the blue horse, Sayers said, “I liked the curiosity invoked by the blue horse. It was purely spontaneous. It felt conceptually and intuitively right.”
A seasoned traveler, Sayers once journeyed by freighter from Tahiti to the Marquesas Islands to paint in the footsteps of Gauguin. His adventures have given him thousands of photographs and no shortage of inspiration. His favorite subjects are people and horses.
Don Sayers’ artwork can be seen at Osmosis Gallery in Niwot. His website is www.donsayersart.com.
