Niwot High School Education Foundation
Tricia Grafelman, public relations chairperson for the Niwot Education Foundation, said, “The foundation is really instrumental in the behind the scenes of getting teachers what they need in their classrooms.” The group raises funds to provide opportunities for the school that would otherwise be missed due to the lack of funds.
The foundation was started in 1994 with nine directors. Eli Buzas brought the idea to the school based on his experience in a Florida school. In the first year, $450 was awarded for staff development. During subsequent years, the foundation awarded more and more money. As of 2012, staff grant awards so far have totaled $19,999, and over $290,000 has been given to Niwot High School since 1994.

Within a twenty minute period of time, teacher-librarian Phil Goerner co-taught a government class in the media center, checked in on the men’s choir working on parts in the computer lab, unlocked a conference room, provided coffee for a student conducting an interview for a civil action project and responded to a last minute request for a cart filled with laptop computers for an English class, all while being interviewed for a newspaper column.

Under the direction of Wendy Deibert, more than 50 Girl Scouts at Blue Mountain Elementary School collected more than 1,400 stuffed animals for the Child Rescue Foundation. Troops 74446, 70219, 3631 and 1043 worked together to advertise the event, collect the stuffed animals, and put a tag on each one with a name and a written message of hope and caring. The animals will be delivered to children in crisis at hospitals, social services, courts, and other places where children need a hug.

Eighth grader Zander and his father, Gavin Maitland, recently ran a half marathon together. Gavin received a double lung transplant and plans on running a full marathon next year. He said, “My donated lungs saved my life. I am forever grateful to my donor…and his family who made the selfless decision to donate his organs when he passed away. Everyone has the power to save lives. Consider registering your wish at www.donatelifecolorado.org.”

Fall is busy at Niwot High School
Homecoming week ended with the football game on Friday night and the dance on Saturday night. It sure was chilly at the football game and the dance was lots of fun for all who attended.
