Niwot Track

Coach Maurice Henriques feels good about the Cougar track season, in spite of the weather. “It’s
going good,” Henriques said. “We’re right where we need to be.”

The Cougars excelled at the Mullen Invite, with 12 personal records among the performances. “Elise
Cranny had a great meet,” Henriques said. “She broke the 4A state record in the Mile and the 800. The
record in the Mile was 4:54 and she ran 4:53. She ran a 2:08 in the 800M and the record was 2:09.” Cranny
was honored as the Best Female Performance at the meet.

NIWOT YOUTH SPORTS

When Niwot Youth Sports baseball coaches gathered for the annual player draft, coaches Chris Churchich and Mike Veeder were reminded that their fathers had once been rivals on the college football field.  Gunbarrel resident Bob Churchich, a former NYS Baseball Director and father of Chris Churchich, was an All Big 8 quarterback at Nebraska in 1966.  The late Mike Veeder, father of NYS Flag Football Director and baseball coach Mike Veeder, was a defensive end for Colorado in 1966 before going on to a pro career.  Nebraska scored 14 fourth-quarter points to win in Boulder, 21-19, with Churchich throwing for two TD’s. Veeder gained a measure of revenge the following season (after Churchich had graduated) when he and the Buffs knocked off NU 21-16 in Lincoln. Veeder took a lateral from Dick Anderson after an interception and returned it 73 yards for a touchdown.

Hockey

HOCKEY
Jake Christofferson, a senior at Niwot High School, was named to the Colorado Coaches’ All-State Hockey Team.   Christofferson played for Monarch High School, the closest school with a CHSAA sanctioned hockey team, which finished second in the state, losing the championship game to Regis, 5-1.  This was Monarch’s first appearance in the state title game.

Christofferson was one of three forwards to earn first-team honors. He tied for second in the state with 27 assists and also ranked third in the state in goals (23) and points (50).

Christofferson is currently playing with his younger brother, NHS freshman Cody Christofferson, on the Longmont Hockey Team in the High Plains League.  Cody Christofferson is a goalie for the Longmont team.  Jake Christofferson will attend Colorado State University next fall, and is trying out for the CSU Hockey Team this spring.

Other Niwot High students who played for Monarch High’s hockey team include junior Cameron Gardner and freshman Andrew Link.
LACROSSE

Eli Negrelli of Niwot scored four goals for the Alexander Dawson lacrosse team in a 10-9 win over Evergreen.  Negrelli plays for Dawson since Niwot does not offer lacrosse.

NIWOT HIGH SCHOOL

The Niwot High School community was saddened by the sudden death of long-time school secretary Kathryn Petri.  Petri had served as NHS Athletic Secretary under current District Athletic Director Rob Berry before taking a position as secretary to the principal, first under current district Superintendent Don Haddad, and then under current Principal Dennis Daly.  Petri had been undergoing treatment for cancer, but was planning to return to her position when she suffered a heart attack. She was known and respected as a firm but compassionate administrator who helped the school district get back on track after difficult financial circumstances.
