Boulder Country Day School lecture series

Boulder Country Day School is once again hosting a lecture series for the upcoming school year that is free and open to the public.

The first of the parent education series will be from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Sept. 13 at the school.

Diana Emerson, Assistant Director of Marketing and Communication for the school, said that due to the popularity of these events, they are going to continue to bring in speakers for forums on a monthly basis.

The events begin with the New York Times best-selling author of “The Gift of Failure,” Jessica Lahey.

The book focuses on helping children overcome adversity through facing it.

But the overall goal is to help parents deal with issues of raising children.

“They’re geared toward helping parents with some bigger current parenting ideas, thoughts and issues,” Emerson said.

Some of the topics for this year include executive functioning for parents of children with cognitive conditions, social media bullying and other cultural issues.

“We cover things like anti-bullying, or about sex, how to have that talk with kids in middle school,” Emerson said. “It also includes our high school fair in October that includes all Boulder County students. That’s always highly attended.”

Boulder Country Day School has been around since 1988, and has always been proactive with confronting issues that society faces, Emerson said.

“There are so many things coming to light with student uniqueness now,” Emerson said. “I think parents are really appreciating the resource … Our parents are the biggest attendees. That’s the intention, to help our parents on the various topics. We’re always getting feedback from our learning center about what kids need.”

Emerson added that giving parents information and tools to help educate children at home helps make for an overall better experience.

“I think it helps stabilize the household,” Emerson said. “There is a lot of information that parents can get from a lot of different places. We try to cover the issues that we hear our parents ask about.”

“These events are designed to help parents navigate the ever-changing world of parenthood,” Emerson said. “There are so many expectations, some guidance can always help.”

She also said that although most attendees of the meetings are parents of students at the school, the public is highly encouraged to come.

“It’s a great place to build community,” Emerson said. “We see parents talking to each other afterwards. It’s an open forum to discuss issues. It’s basically support for our families to help strengthen them at home. We’re trying to lift up and support parents in general, not just the parents of our students.”
