    Jonathan Epstein|Mar 13, 2024

According to Coach Stephen Dimit, “It’s hard to get a win to open the season because there’s not a lot of prep time.” But the NHS girls soccer team was able to do just that last Thursday, March 7, in a snowy, messy game against Centaurus High School, coming away with a 2-1 victory. Paige Russell, a senior, and Hannah Wurth, a freshman, each scored for the Cougars. Margaux Boyer, another senior, had an assist. The Cougars have a 20-player roster and half of them are freshman and sophmores. Dimit said, “That’s a young team.” He’s leaning on Russ...

  • Optimistic NHS' girls tennis season

    Jonathan Epstein|Mar 6, 2024

The Niwot High School girls varsity tennis team finished last season with a hard fought 7-6 record. Despite strong individual showings, including Sahasra Kolli winning the Class 4A state championship at #2 singles, the team was challenged by a lack of depth according to Coach Aimee Hites. Hites expects that depth to improve as the team begins its spring season with a home match against Fairview High School at 3:30 p.m. on March 5. Kolli returns for her sophomore season and will play at #1 singles. While playing #1 entails a higher level of...

  • Let's hear it for referees

    Jonathan Epstein|Jan 10, 2024

Referees play a critical role in youth sports from recreational leagues to club programs and through high school. Children experience the joy of winning and the lessons of loss, while parents get to be right there with them all because referees are willing to spend their days, evenings and weekends making sure the rules are followed, the score gets kept and the games get played. Unfortunately, youth referees' jobs are becoming increasingly difficult due to the behavior of parents, coaches and pl...

  • What's in a wave?

    Jonathan Epstein|Jan 3, 2024

Hand gestures have a long, diverse and important history. From early humans using them to communicate non-aggression, to nautical and military signaling, to non-verbal forms of communication used today during sporting events where players acknowledge the crowd. Waving is the most common hand gesture and an important social custom that somewhere along the way it seems, has started to become less practiced. Do we wave less frequently because we are increasingly walking around, heads down, looking...
