At the same time, five miles west of Niwot, the Middle Fork Fire also spread quickly, but was soon contained. That has driven the testing positivity rate to 20.2% and the seven-day case rate to 757.5 per 100,000 residents, also unprecedented figures. According to state and county health officials,...

  • A snowy goodbye to 2021

    Jan 5, 2022

After weeks of unseasonably dry weather, a frigid winter storm brought several inches of snow and below-zero temperatures to Boulder County on New Year's Eve. While that was good news for the first responders battling the Marshall Fire, it was less so for local birds, who found their favorite watering holes inaccessible on the biggest party night of the year....

Pomeroy may be new-ish to town, but he quickly started giving his time and energy to make Niwot a better place. He's made loads of new friends and admirers along the way. That's why a long-time Niwot resident suggested we feature Pomeroy in our Familiar Face column and learn about his life. Left Hand Valley...

  • Marshall Fire recovery

Deryn Davidson and Sharon Bokan, Colorado State University Extension Boulder County|Jan 5, 2022

We have watched the scenes from Colorado Springs (Waldo Canyon Fire in June of 2012) and California where wildfires reached into our towns and cities destroying hundreds of homes in a matter of hours. Most Front Range inhabitants would never have thought that it would happen so close to home. Our idea that wildfires are confined to forested areas and during summer has been challenged and is no longer the norm. We need to be prepared and able to recover should the unthinkable happen. Our...
