January's Left Hand Laurel recipients are Michael Tomich and Patty Machen, who have a long history of giving back to the Niwot community. During the months of 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic was at its peak, Tomich and Machen felt that people desperately needed social interactions and to not feel so isolated. As the owners of The Old Oak Coffeehouse, they could not let anyone sit in the shop, or even at The Emporium next door during that time. They had the idea to have free socially distanced...
In a Jan. 3 e-mail to "friends and valued guests," Farow Restaurant owners Lisa and Patrick Balcom announced that their upscale eatery in Niwot will be closing on Saturday, Jan. 11. Soon after the restaurant opened in 2021, Farow began receiving recognitions and awards for their hyper-local focus, commitment to a more sustainable food system, fair wages for farmers, and innovative menu. Among them were the Slow Food Snail of Approval, and numerous awards from Boulder Weekly including Best New...
After six years in Niwot's Cottonwood Square, Fly Away Home is now closed. Owner Kathy Trauner announced to her loyal customers that Fly Away Home, a home decor boutique, would close on Dec. 24. The shop was a favorite of local shoppers, along with out of town visitors, for its unique home decorating items. Trauner carried a wide variety of goods, such as baby outfits with clever sayings, including a baby girl onesie that says, "I'm not allowed to date. Ever." The store also featured art and...
Ok. One of my New Year's resolutions is to "lighten up." I can think of few better places to lighten up than discussing that poor maligned condiment that is often one of the first foods to be tossed out when going on an after-holidays diet. Yes, I am talking about mayonnaise. Either you love it or hate it. Let me offer a little background. I love condiments of all kinds. I love mustard of every ilk, including Dijon, brown, spicy, yellow, and horseradish-filled. I love aioli, salad dressings,...
Last year was Niwot Hall's first as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Many donations were made throughout the year, and end of the year fundraising efforts resulted in additional tax deductible donations of just over $8,000 thanks to participation in the Colorado Gives Foundation, two Rebecca Folsom concerts, and the sale of Carolyn Bradley paintings displayed in the Hall. Niwot Hall is operated solely by unpaid volunteers and several new volunteers have just been welcomed to the organization....
Finn Murphy was a Conneticut Yankee who took an offramp from long haul trucking to end up on a ranch in Boulder, Colorado. He was seduced by local excitement over a potential modern gold rush in hemp production when the eighty-year federal ban was lifted in 2018. It wasn't as if Murphy was a neophyte in small business. He started a poster business in college, became a trucking contractor, and then grew a small sweater importing business into a cashmere empire, among other things. He was East...
Although Mother Nature hasn't given us much to whine about this season, Let's Wine About Winter is still on tap for next month. Sponsored by the Niwot Cultural Arts Association (NCAA), with funding by the Niwot Local Improvement District, the event is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 8 from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. Now in its eighth year, event participants, who become members of a club by purchasing tickets, have the opportunity to stroll through historic Niwot when Cottonwood Square and Second Avenue...
Niwot High School graduate Aamuro Kanda, Class of 2019, debuted his first feature film, "Mr. Yanagi's Aliens," at the Boedecker Theater in Boulder on Jan. 7. Kanda co-directed and co-starred in the movie with his roommate, Aspen native Alex Buysse. At NHS, Kanda took filmmaking classes and was a member of the Boulder International Film Festival's Youth Advisory Council before attending The University of Southern California's School of Cinematic Arts, where he met Buysse. Kanda said, "During...
At the age of eight, Mai Vu, Program Manager for the St. Vrain Valley Schools Innovation Center's Artificial Intelligence (AI) Program, landed in Washington, D.C., from Vietnam. She recalled the stark contrast of arriving there in February, dressed in flip-flops and a dress, her first taste of the United States. Her father chose D.C. as it seemed like a safe haven from the looming threat of communism in Vietnam. Her educational journey included graduating from the University of Maryland and...
It is my hope that this column will be another way to connect to you and give you insight into my whole-body approach to health and wellness as we embark on a new year, 2025! In this month’s edition of Tooth Be Told, I’d like to talk about fluoride. What is fluoride, and what are the exposure modalities? Let’s also discuss the increased opposition to water fluoridation. First, fluoride is the ionic form of fluorine, the thirteenth most abundant element in the Earth’s crust. It is released into the environment naturally in both water and air...
During these cold months, nothing beats a cozy body-warming soup or stew. Try one of these favorites and cuddle up. THE CENTRAL CAFE'S IRISH STEW Submitted by Jesse Murphy "My great-grandparents owned a restaurant in Rock Port, Missouri, called The Central Cafe. It was open for about 50 years until sometime in the 1970s. During the Great Depression, they would give out free stew and soups to anyone who was hungry. From those times to WW-II, meat was often scarce, so this stew was a special...
Niwot Youth Sports (NYS) is set to begin its winter basketball season this week, with games scheduled to start on Saturday, Jan. 11. The program continues to demonstrate strong community engagement despite some new capacity limitations. "NYS basketball is thriving!" said Jessica Walker, NYS Basketball Commissioner and Executive Director. NYS recently hosted a successful winter mini-camp on Dec. 23, where 182 young athletes in grades 1-8 participated in sessions led by Niwot High School coaches...
More than 200 wrestlers competing across 14 weight classes from 20 schools across Colorado converged on Niwot High School Saturday, Jan. 4 for the Niwot Invitational wrestling tournament. The tournament, which has become a significant mid-season test for Colorado prep wrestlers, featured weight classes ranging from 106 to 285 pounds. Niwot fielded competitors in ten of the fourteen weight classes, showing the program's growing depth under new Head Coach Michael DeCamillis. The host Cougars made...
It was quite a year for the Niwot High School boys cross country team. Winning a state title in Class 5A, Niwot's first experience in the highest state classification, with a dominant team effort began the run of honors for Coach Kelly Christensen's runners. That was followed by a second-place team finish at the Nike Cross Regionals in Arizona, which also qualified the team to run at the Nike Cross Nationals. The Cougars surprised quite a few people at the Nike Cross Nationals in Portland,...
From his work inside the classroom to both of his demanding extracurriculars, few high school students are as well-rounded as Lucas Menza. A junior at Twin Peaks Classical Academy in Longmont, Menza wrestles for Niwot High School and plays violin in the Longmont Youth Symphony. The multi-talented Menza values his two after-school passions highly, but wrestling earned his undivided attention on Saturday, Jan. 4, at the Niwot Invitational. Menza wrestled in the 175-pound division and won his...
