  • Niwot drops close match to defending 4A state champs

    Jocelyn Rowley, [email protected]|Mar 22, 2018

If ever there was a good time for a loss, Niwot’s narrow 4-3 defeat at the hands of defending Class 4A state champions Cheyenne Mountain on March 17, was it, according to head coach Aimee Keronen. With four of the seven matches lasting three sets, her team not only showed it can compete with the top teams in the state, it gave the players some keen insights for beating the nine-time champs in May. “I think it was ok to lose some of those three-set matches, because our girls are hungry now...

  • Niwot High School students take part in national walk out

    Vicky Dorvee, [email protected]|Mar 22, 2018

Niwot High students flowed out of the school building Wednesday morning just before 10 a.m. to join in the countrywide momentum of teens exercising their rights to free speech by asking for stronger gun control legislation. Student hopes were that by emptying classrooms and being heard, they will bring about speedy changes to prevent the growing wave of senseless tragedies in the U.S. Student organizers Sophia Jones and Lauren McHugh stood with fellow march leaders on the berm at the front of...

  • NHS students charged following threats

    Jesse Murphy, [email protected]|Mar 22, 2018

Charges have been filed against two juveniles following a Feb. 16 “Safe 2 Tell” report at Niwot High School. Last month, the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office responded to the report, but the school has been unable to report the incident to district patrons due to the investigation. Now that charges have been filed, the two students were arrested on Friday, March 16. Since they are both 16, names have not been released. “Safe 2 Tell” is an anonymous method for students to report suspicious behavior or knowledge of threats made by other students o...

  • Near “perfect day’ in early season track and field

    Jocelyn Rowley, [email protected]|Mar 22, 2018

Even on St. Patrick’s Day, it wasn’t hard to spot the green-clad Niwot athletes competing in the Windsor Invitational, as they were almost always out in front of the pack. On a sunny spring day, tailor made for running fast, both veterans and newcomers set new personal bests in many of the meet’s sprint events, helping both the boys and girls to their second top-ten finishes of the still-early season. “It’s a perfect day,” Niwot head coach Maurice Henriques said. Now in his eighth year, Henri...

  • Veterans Solem, Ostrom head up fun, youthful team

    Jocelyn Rowley, [email protected]|Mar 22, 2018

Niwot girls golf coach Ed Weaver wasn’t sure what to expect after a phalanx of novice golfers showed up for the first day of tryouts late last month, but he didn’t expect them to take to the sport so easily. Of the eight players on the 2018 roster, four are new to the game, but they’ve already proven to be precocious learners, a development that has Weaver enthusiastic about the future. “I have four freshmen, so that’s pretty cool,” he said. “I’m pretty excited about all of it. I’m definitely...

  • RMCA Hosts Middle School Choir Festival

    Jennifer Simms, [email protected]|Mar 22, 2018

Karen Hannahoe, choir festival clinician at Rocky Mountain Christian Academy’s (RMCA) first middle school choir festival, had some advice for some 470 middle school choir students, “Be grateful. Be humble. Be kind.” The event, which took place at Rocky Mountain Christian Church on March 14, included performances from seven local schools, with critique sessions and whole group activities led by Hannahoe, choir teacher at Nevin Platt Middle School in Boulder. The festival itself was the brain...

  • Letter to the Editor

    Mar 22, 2018

Letter to the Editor, Recently, after surgery, I walked downtown, in my pajamas. Did it matter? Not at all. That's one great advantage out of many, to living in a small, quaint town. I happened to grow up in a similarly small town; however Niwot is an infinitely more exquisite paradise. I cannot (and do not) want to imagine it any differently. And yet, as Sarah and Alan Stratton (et al.) pointed out in their Letter to the Editor, Niwot's innocent, serene nature is in danger of being sacrificed to a newer, "larger than life" ideal/lifestyle....

  • Student of the Week: Julia Pentz

    Jocelyn Rowley, [email protected]|Mar 22, 2018

The Niwot girls tennis team is a serious contender for the Class 4A State title this year, and senior Julia Pentz is leading the charge. In four matches so far this season, the Cougars’ No. 3 singles player is undefeated, with a two-time state title-winner and last year’s state runner-up among her vanquished foes. “Julia is just awesome all around,” Niwot head coach Aimee Keronen said. “She’s a good team leader and she plays hard. I have all the confidence in the world in Julia.” In Niwot’s se...
