  • Wheat Ridge ousts Niwot from soccer playoffs

    Jocelyn Rowley, [email protected]|May 17, 2017

It was a disappointing end to the season, but Niwot head soccer coach Stephen Dimit was in no way disappointed in his team’s performance against No. 2 seed Wheat Ridge in the second round of the Class 4A state tournament. “Everybody played really hard,” he said following the Cougars 3-0 loss to the Farmers last Saturday. “We didn’t connect as much as we could have, but it wasn’t for lack of effort. Everybody poured their heart into it, and they played for each other.” The Cougars were stymied...

Niwot senior Lauren Wolf, a midfielder on the girls varsity soccer team, scored the game-tying goal with just 17 seconds remaining in Niwot’s first round playoff game against the Erie Tigers on May 10. Niwot went on to win the game 4-3 in the second overtime period, their first postseason victory since 2014. Wolf, a three-year varsity member and team’s Co-Captain, ended the season with three goals on four shots, the highest total of her career. Wolf also scored against Greeley Central and Mou...

    Jesse Murphy, [email protected]|May 17, 2017

The goal to help low-income students have access to drum lessons continues this weekend for Boulder Drum Studio and the Drumming for Jared program. Larry Bennett, who owns and operates the studio, established Drumming for Jared earlier this year following the tragic October 2016 death of 19-year-old Niwot resident Jared Lizakowski in a motorcycle accident on Niwot Road. Lizakowski had been a long-time student of Bennett’s, and thanks to Drumming for Jared, many more youngsters are able to take lessons, get equipment and continue their m...

    Jocelyn Rowley, [email protected]|May 17, 2017

Before last weekend’s St. Vrain New Balance Invitational, Niwot head track coach Maurice Henriques was hopeful his boys relay team would finally post a state qualifying time. With just one week left before the 2017 Class 4A Track & Field Championships, the crowded meet was the last chance they would get this season, and he knew they were close. “That’s our goal,” he explained following the Northern Conference championships, where all four relays finished in second place. “Hopefully, the weath...

    Jesse Murphy, [email protected]|May 17, 2017

A memorial ride was held over the weekend for Charles Crenshaw, a cyclist who was killed on Monday of last week. The ride was coordinated by Longmont Velo, a bicycle shop on Francis St. where the ride started. It ended at the site of the crash, N. 65th St. and Nelson Road. Anthony Hardwick, who is the head service mechanic at Velo, said that it was a somber day. “It was about Mr. Crenshaw and his family,” Hardwick said. “I really wish we could have met all of these people under different circu...
