Nothing conjures up a deeper sense of patriotism and belonging to a community like a 4th of July parade, and Niwot's celebration has a way of elevating that hometown, apple pie feeling to the max. There are kids riding their streamer-adorned bikes, horse-mounted riders carrying flags, well-represented community organizations walking with their banners, all encased in a backdrop of majestic music. And of course there's the Grand Marshal riding in a spiffy convertible smiling and waving to the cro...
July 1st marked the opening of the Why Not Niwot? Juried Art Show display of art with a Niwot theme in local stores and restaurants. The Niwot Cultural Arts Association and Osmosis Gallery sponsor the event every year, and this year marked a new high with 38 entries. Niwot's business district was a busy place on July's First Friday Art Walk, with artists creating art outdoors, a book signing at Inkberry Books, a classic car show outside Niwot Market, shop owners offering refreshments, and live...
A stretch of the LoBo Trail in Niwot is once again level and springy beneath feet and tires after Boulder County resurfaced the well-used path. Newly laid crusher fines gravel was added to the section of trail just north of Centrebridge Drive between 79th Street and the Niwot Road underpass. "I think it's good. It's soft, it's cushy, it's nice," runner Collette Wilfong said. "I've always really liked this trail, the mix of dogs, people, bikes. I'm glad it's getting taken care of." The trail has...
Left Hand Water district has released its annual water quality report and methods for homeowners to reduce their water consumption for the environment. Water contamination is often caused by agricultural livestock operations, septic systems, sewage treatment plants, oil and gas production, gas stations, synthetic or volatile organic chemicals, and urban storm-water runoff that may contain pesticides, herbicides, salts, and metals. Fortunately, there were no treatment technique violations or maximum contaminant level violations found in the...
By the middle of the 19th century, Sweden was in the throes of a national population crisis-the small country's population had doubled from 1750 to 1850, and was still growing. Tillable land became more scarce, and famine swept the nation. Emigration regulations were eased, and the 1860s saw a massive movement of Swedes fleeing their homeland; between 1861 and 1881, 150,000 traveled to the United States. The majority of these immigrants quickly made their way to the new states and territories...

Attendees young and old enjoyed a stop-off at the museum for a self-paced...
This past week's Rock & Rails concert had a unique opening performance by the talented Derek DeMuth. Despite the threatening weather, many came to enjoy this young artist's great music. Derek plays his guitar in a unique fashion creating a kaleidoscope of musical color and sounds encompassing the spectrum. Derek uses his hands to tap the guitar in a percussive manner giving the illusion of full band accompaniment. When Derek is playing his guitar, he seems to wrap himself around the instrument...
Niwot's annual 4th of July Pancake Breakfast was back to pre-pandemic size this year, with long lines waiting to be served by volunteers and staff from the Niwot Market. Life is like running. Every step counts. For Ian and Gabi Anderson, a couple living in Gunbarrel, running the mile—about 1,500 steps—at the second annual Downhill Mile race on the Fourth of July was a celebration of life, being in the moment, and showing their tremendous gratitude. “We loved it!” said Ian, who along with his wife lost their Louisville home Dec. 30 in the Marshall Fire in Boulder County. “I placed 12th, and Gabi placed 49th. It was really fun. The pancake breakfast afterward...
The Niwot High School football field is getting a facelift, and more. Work has been underway for a month on replacing the sod on the field with artificial turf, with plans to host the NHS Homecoming football game at the school this fall. Along with the turf replacement, a permanent fence is also being installed around the perimeter of the field. Some members of the community are not happy about the fence, which school officials claim is necessary to prevent vandalism to the field and to prevent...
Gracing the podium's peak is nothing new for 2014 Niwot alum Elise Cranny. Nearly one year removed from her first Olympics, she made national headlines once again on June 26 by taking first place in the 2022 USATF Outdoor Championships' 5000-meter with a time of 15 minutes, 49.15 seconds Cranny's win came courtesy of an impressive surge in the final 2000 meters. After crossing the 3000-meter mark well behind the leaders, and in ninth place - albeit still within one second of first - she made a m...
