The expression "people person" was created precisely for the likes of Niwotian Andy Lattanzi. He genuinely enjoys being around others and has a natural ease when it comes to interacting. Lattanzi uses his warmth and insight to lean in and bring about positive change for individuals and the community. The Left Hand Valley Courier selected Lattanzi as this month's Left Hand Laurel recipient to honor the tremendous contribution of his time and energy volunteering with many local organizations for...
Admirers left flowers, notes and appreciative comments on social media for the artist who brought Native American images to life from the stumps of massive willow trees along Niwot Road. Artist Eddie Running Wolf died Aug. 5 at age 62. "He put his heart and soul into that project," said his sister Margie Albert. "He knew all the history of what he was putting in there. And knew it as if it was his own history, as if he was that Indian warrior. He put himself into it." Starting in 2007, Running...
For approximately the past three years, there has been tension between Haystack Golf Course and some of the neighbors in and near the adjacent Brigadoon Glen residential area. Complaints have been made against the golf course accusing the facility of both liquor license and land use code violations. "They have a history of violating their liquor license by serving at the residence and they were issued a violation in August 2018," said neighbor Martin Magill. "[And] there's a zoning case open."...
Direct impacts of COVID-19 have officially reached the fall with the Colorado High School Athletics Association (CHSAA) announcing its rearranged 2020-21 athletics and activities calendar. Instead of traditional fall, winter and spring sports seasons, CHSAA will now hold A, B, C and D seasons that will extend through June. Most notably, football, volleyball and boys soccer will move their usual fall slate to the early-March Season C. Boys tennis, golf, softball and cross country are continuing...
A proposal to bring more parking to downtown Niwot cleared its last major hurdle on Aug. 6 when the Boulder Board of County Commissioners voted unanimously to conditionally approve a parking facility on the western edge of downtown. Now the project's sponsors are preparing for construction and coming to terms with the realization that their long-held vision is finally becoming a reality. "Well, it's been a long battle, but yes, I did think we would get it done," Niwot Cultural Arts Association...
I always love partnering with Inkberry Books in Niwot, because they always hook me up with the coolest books! This week, I took a look at Mohamed Asem's Stranger in the Pen, and I thoroughly enjoyed it This is a nonfiction memoir of Asem, mostly focusing on his experience of being detained at Gatwick Airport in the UK. However, this storyline is intertwined with other anecdotes of his life: including failed attempts at love, tensions and reflections about family, and his international...
Dear Editor, Every day in the spring, I looked forward to the 8 p.m. howl. Along with so many other people across the US, I’d walk outside at 8 p.m. and join in with neighbors’ exuberant howling. It was cathartic, and it became a routine. The howl honored nurses and doctors on the frontlines, working stoically through the pandemic, and, though I found it ironic that the people who everyone was howling for were often inside a hospital unable to hear the howling, it gave people stuck at home something to do together without needing to go any...
Because of Covid-19, I laugh more easily, more loudly and longer than ever before. Because of Covid-19, I weep more easily, more often and longer than ever before. I seclude myself and hunger for companionship. I miss my son, my daughter-in-law, and my precious grandchildren profoundly. From visiting them six times a year, I have seen them once since last Christmas, and we could not hug when we saw each other. I have missed, for the first time in their lives, being with both of my grandchildren...

For the last eight years, the Niwot United Methodist Church has been participating in a unique method of outreach - micro loans. The loans go through a nonprofit company called Kiva, formed in 2005, which operates through a network of donors/lenders who help individuals and groups with specific needs. Dennis Knowlden, along with his wife Minetta, are co-chairs of the church's outreach committee. Knowlden said that the church just surpassed giving over $12,000 to various people over the course...
A virtual town hall was held in late July regarding a concept proposal for a 268-unit development on Gunbarrel land currently zoned as light industrial. The 9.8-acre parcel in question is located just to the west of Spine Road and east of Celestial Seasonings - the owner of the property - and south of Sleepytime Road, up to the current single-family housing development there. Gunbarrel residents recognize this area as open space that the tea company designated as a prairie dog preserve in 1999,...
On July 30, officials with the Boulder County Community Planning and Permitting department held a town hall meeting to discuss proposed changes to short-term rentals, with the goal to clearly define and regulate these units for unincorporated parts of the county. The meeting was conducted mostly by Assistant County Attorney Jasmine Rodenburg, who discussed the current regulations, proposed changes and reasons behind them, followed by small group online meetings. As it stands now, short-term rentals are defined as being rented for less than 30...
After taking a short summer break in July, the Niwot LID advisory committee was back in action on Aug. 4 with a full agenda. Treasurer's Report LID Treasurer Bruce Rabeler opened the meeting with a financial update, starting with the latest revenue reports from the Colorado Department of Revenue. For now, revenue collections are holding steady in Niwot, despite ongoing restrictions on large events and indoor dining. The Niwot LID earned a combined $29,968 in April ($15,560) and May ($14,408),...
A shortened 16-game season and limited varsity roster will only heighten the excitement for Niwot High School softball this fall. Coming off a 12-14 season, Coach Bobby Matthews leads a young roster into what will be, one way or another, a historic 2020 season. Per the Colorado High School Athletic Association's (CHSAA) COVID-19 regulations, there will be no non-conference matchups and only 16 guaranteed games opposed to the usual 23 games. That means Niwot will only be facing teams from the...
As both Boulder Valley School District and St. Vrain Valley School District announced after a summer of sparse communication that they would begin the school year online, teachers and families alike are scrambling to adjust for what's to come. The update comes as COVID-19 cases continue to fluctuate in the county; as of the Aug. 4 announcement, cases had been steadily rising for almost a month. But as of this article's publication, there has been a decline for multiple consecutive days....
Ed Weaver isn't thrilled with his team's finish at their season debut at Quail Dunes Golf Course on Aug. 7, but that isn't to say he's disappointed either. In fact, the Cougars met his expectations more or less exactly in Fort Morgan, and now he can see their path to the postseason a little more clearly. "What I need to do is take my 90s guys-Luc, Emmett and Carlos-and get them to take five or six shots off each of their scores, so they're in the high 80s. Then we'll be right in the thick of thi...
