With a clip of the scissors (and a little tugging), Carissa Mina and Jerilyn Patterson cut the ribbon on a dream that's been more than five years in the making. On Aug. 13, the co-owners celebrated the grand opening of The Wandering Jellyfish Bookshop, Niwot's newest destination for young readers. "Things are going wonderfully," Mina said as customers streamed into the cozy space at the corner of 2nd Avenue and Franklin Street. "There has been great excitement, and it's been a great turnout....
From the time Cotton Burden was in the sixth grade, he knew he would be a lawyer. After a stint in the Navy as an aircrewman and a Bachelor of Science degree from the Leeds Business School at the University of Colorado, Burden accomplished that goal and graduated from the University of Colorado School of Law in 1981. It was during that time that he also obtained a real estate broker's license, setting him up for his current role as president and in-house counsel of Burden Incorporated, which...
The first Niwot Honey Bee Harvest Festival will take flight on Aug. 28 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., featuring hives of fun activity around town. Look for flyers posted with the schedule of the day's activities. Niwot Business Association vice-president Deb Fowler and Niwot resident Victoria Keen have been very "beesy" organizing the festival since early 2021. Honey bees are not native to the United States and were brought over by the pilgrims, but they have long been a part of the Niwot area....
After a long year of weekly Zoom meetings and modified events, the Rotary Club of Niwot is back on more familiar footing in 2021, and newly elected president Kerrin Reichen is looking forward to a busy year of giving back to the community. "Our motto is 'Service above Self,' and we want to get out and get our hands dirty, so to speak," she said. "There are so many things in the community we support, and the money we raise goes straight to them." Reichen assumed the presidency as of July 1, and...
Are you ready to see behind the curtain and understand more about area produce farms? On Aug. 28, join in a bus tour of produce farms in Boulder and Adams Counties ranging from two – 2000 acres, direct to consumer and wholesale, and hear what it takes to help them thrive. CSU Extension, in partnership with Colorado Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association, has queued up a tour of four farms for a full Saturday of exploration. This tour is funded by grant dollars through a Specialty Crops Block Grant award from the Colorado Department of A...
The school community was hopeful that when they returned to school this fall masks would not be required in SVVSD schools. As it turns out, that won't be the case. Following guidance from Boulder County Public Health through Public Health Order 2021-07, the St. Vrain Valley School District (SVVSD) is requiring masking for all students, faculty and staff in grades PK-12 while indoors. The school district did not provide a direct response to the Courier's questions about the decision. Instead,...
Just about four months separate the Niwot Cougars from the heartbreak they endured in the Class 4A boys state soccer semifinals, bumped from fall to spring in the 2020-2021 school year. That is all in the past, though, with a new core of Cougars greeted with the chance to mold their own history. Head coach Stephen Dimit will be tasked with replacing the production of eight graduated seniors that accounted for nearly two-thirds of the goals scored last season. Fortunately for Dimit, the players...
Another championship sweep for Niwot at the 2021 Class 4A cross country meet isn't a foregone conclusion, but it's hard to dismiss the strong evidence in favor of it. Returning to the varsity are two of Colorado's fastest high school distance runners in Zane Bergen and Mia Prok, plus a battle-hardened pack of veterans that is still in shape from the Cougars' recent title run at the state track and field championships. Add to that a coach looking to list another two state titles on his resume,...
Meet Jake! Jake is a 7-year-old Boston Terrier Mix. The best word to describe Jake is...SPUNKY!! Jake is super playful as well and will take every opportunity to toss a toy around and go for a walk. Jake loves attention from 4-legged and 2-legged creatures alike. Once he is done playing and messing around, you can find him snuggling up to the nearest human. Jake is looking for a forever home that will embrace his spunky nature and give him all the love he so deserves. He currently resides in a...
Local rockers Francis & The Wolf hit the stage at Wibby Brewing on Aug. 13 to celebrate the release of their latest album, 'Truth be Told,' a project four years in the making. Lead vocalist Aaron Wardle was joined by band members Dan Lane, Sam Brewer, Josh Quesada and Aiden Harbeson (who couldn't quite squeeze in the photo) for a two-plus hour set of uptempo, guitar-driven "American rock" that included mostly original songs, but a few familiar covers as well. The band is next scheduled to play...
