  • Soccer: Niwot closes out regular season with tie in Longmont

    Jocelyn Rowley, [email protected]|Oct 27, 2017

Despite playing their “best soccer in two years,” the Niwot boys soccer team almost got more than it could handle from a Longmont Trojans squad still vying for a playoff spot in the last game of the regular season. An overachieving Trojans’ defense repeatedly stymied Niwot’s relentless attack during the rare night game at Everly Montgomery Field last Wednesday, and the Cougars barely escaped with a 1-1 tie. “Score line aside, I was really happy with the way that we played for most of that game...

  • Proving Einstein

    Mary Wolbach Lopert, [email protected]|Oct 27, 2017

On Oct 16, LIGO announced its observatories were able to detect gravitational waves created by the collision of two neutron stars. The collision occurred on Aug. 17. The collision, known as a kilonova and similar to a supernova, simultaneously generated electromagnetic waves (light and gamma rays) and a gravitational wave, both travelling at the speed of light. LIGO detected the gravitational wave, while other observatories detected the electromagnetic wave. The collision also produced heavy metals, such as gold, silver, lead and uranium....

  • Bringing Light to the Fire House Museum

    Vicky Dorvee, [email protected]|Oct 27, 2017

Efforts are underway to bring attention to one of Niwot’s most treasured historical gems – the Fire House Museum. It’s a tad too easy to be chatting on a stroll down 2nd Avenue and completely miss the lean wooden structure that sits back from the façades of the adjoining buildings. The Niwot Historical Society (NHS) recently put into motion two efforts – the renovation of the fire house museum building, and the restoration of the building site. NHS has successfully raised the needed funds to...

  • Gunbarrel’s HDP makes waves with Nobel Prize winners

    Mary Wolbach Lopert, [email protected]|Oct 27, 2017

In an unassuming building in Gunbarrel lies a hidden gem, High Precision Devices, Inc. HPD has been in the headlines recently, because its seismic isolation platform was an integral part of the experiment that won the 2017 Nobel Prize in physics. The prize was awarded to three physicists, Drs. Rainer, Weiss Barry Barish and Kip Thorne, for the detection of a gravitational wave that was generated by a collision of two black holes over one billion years ago. Einstein predicted the existence of...
