A crew of workers, led by Bryan Buikema of C8 Design + Fabrication out of Berthoud, and David Schaldach of Niwot's We Love Trees, arrived early on Wednesday morning, Nov. 15, at the intersection of Second Avenue and Niwot Road to remove the two iconic tree carvings by Native American artist Eddie Running Wolf for restoration. The willow tree trunks carved by the late artist once lined a lateral of the Hinman Ditch that ran along Niwot Road to irrigate farmland around Niwot before housing...
The former Colterra Restaurant on Second Avenue is currently in development by Nassar Development as a mixed use space. Plans for the former Colterra Restaurant include an eatery by Boulder restaurateur Josh Dinar, two commercial spaces and five residential units. In various capacities, Dinar is behind several area restaurants including River and Woods, T/Aco, Ash'Kara and Tributary Food Hall in Golden. Nassar Development founder David Nassar presented a vision for the new restaurant, including...
The Wandering Jellyfish Bookshop, primarily a children's bookstore, will be closing its doors on Dec. 9, two-and-a-half years after it opened in the former "Niwot Tribune" building on Second Avenue in Niwot. The bookshop, affectionately dubbed TWJ, has been a warm, welcoming place for community members and authors alike. It showcased local authors and diverse perspectives, and catered to young readers and those young at heart. The owners cited a failure to meet financial goals as leading to the...
Dear Left Hand Valley Courier, Mental health has become a much more prominent topic in recent years. There are more articles, news segments, self-help books, and overall discussion of mental health in the general media. All of which is great that our society is on the road to issues around mental health, but the discussion and action shouldn’t end there. Nor should mental health awareness only take place during May - it is ever present and can be an especially difficult thing to deal with. I am not a medical professional, but I have had my s...
Ok. We are all thankful for many things in our lives. When it's time to go around the Thanksgiving table and recite all the things we are thankful for, I get a little choked up. I am certainly thankful for my husband, my family, my friends, and my health. I am thankful for the roof over my head, the food on the table, my dog, Emma, and so very thankful for the angels among us. I am thankful for my job, lunch with my friend and my book clubs. I am thankful for that incredible view of the...
I don't typically gravitate toward Western books, nor do I usually select collected works, but I was pleasantly surprised by Wallace Stegner's "Where the Bluebird Sings to the Lemonade Springs." Notably, this was also Inkberry Books' book of the month for November. It's not a particularly long book-it clocks in at just under 230 pages-but somehow it still feels a bit heavy. Divided into three parts, "Where the Bluebird Sings" is a collection of sixteen essays, many of which have been previously...
NIWOT GIRLS WIN REGIONALS, GOING TO NATIONALS When the top teams in the country gather in Portland, Oregon on Saturday, Dec. 2, for the Nike Cross Country National Championships, all eyes will be on the two girls teams representing the Southwest Region – Niwot High School and Air Academy High School. Colorado's 4A State Champion Cougars and 5A champion Kadets squared off Saturday, Nov. 18, for the first time this season at the four-state Nike regional qualifying meet at the Coyote Run Golf C...
Every day was "leg day" this fall for Niwot High School senior Paris Lee. After balancing both soccer and kicking/punting duties on the varsity football team over the past few months, Lee said he could barely walk when it was all over. "I was very sore," Lee said. "After my first three days of not having both (sports), I wasn't able to walk up the stairs." Although NHS certainly doesn't lack multi-sport athletes, very few manage to play two sports during the same season. Lee's weekday afternoons...
Niwot High School's "Pride of Niwot" Marching Band has been making tremendous strides in recent years, taking on more advanced halftime shows and attending more events and performances than before the pandemic. Band members celebrated their success at the second annual band banquet on Nov. 13. Band directors and parents helped organize the banquet, which was filled with awards, videos, a slideshow presentation, and a catered pasta dinner. Students and staff dressed up formally for the event and...
As the whistle blows and the 2023 season comes to a close, the Niwot High School volleyball team reflected on a successful and memorable season. The Cougars finished their season with an impressive 8-1 record in the Longs Peak League, and an overall record of 17-10, with 11 of those victories coming as sweeps. With a remarkable record, hardships the team faced were well hidden and attested to the quick adjustment the team was able to make to ensure a successful performance from the beginning of...
