Head coach Ed Weaver has high expectations for the 2018 Niwot boys golf team, and he makes a convincing case for them. On paper, his projected varsity squad is almost an embarrassment of riches. He is returning all three state qualifiers from last season, and expects to pick up a talented incoming freshman. Add in a handful of rapidly improving juniors and sophomores behind them, and Weaver anticipates having enough depth to vie not just for event titles, but eventually the conference and...
Even though their team fell short of its ultimate goal, seniors Alex Herman and Oskar Wells consider Niwot’s 18th-place finish at this year’s Class 4A state track and field championships a fitting coda to the boys’ most successful season in years. After scoring just 4 points total in their last four state appearances, this year’s squad racked up a total of 21 points at the three-day event, thanks mostly to Wells, who medaled twice, first for his fifth-place finish in the 800M and again with th...
Boulder County Transportation Director George Gerstle announced last week that the county has suspended the subdivision paving incentive fund. The reason, he said, is due to issues with the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Specifically the timeliness, frequency and amounts of reimbursements the county will receive as a result of the 2013 flood. “Until we have a better handle on how we’ll be reimbursed we want to make sure we’re not over-committing the county budget,” Gerstle said. “We’re trying to be conservative and make sure we’re not g...
A pair of exciting top-three finishes in the last four events catapulted the Niwot girls swim team past cross-town rival Silver Creek and into fifth place at the Class 4A State Championship finals at the VMAC Feb. 10. Sophomore Abby Shaw bested her preliminary time by more than half a second to take second in the 100 backstroke right after freshman Emiley Yie led the eighth-seeded 200 freestyle relay team to a surprise third-place finish in the dramatic final. Niwot ended the day with top-ten...
Led by first-year wrestlers Julian Molina and Matt Bitterman, the Niwot Cougars outlasted cross-town rival Silver Creek Thursday night Jan. 18, picking up their second Northern League victory of the year. “I am very proud of the two of them,” Matthews said following the win. “To come out for wrestling as sophomores for the first time is tough and they have embraced the grind.” Senior Brandon Barton (138 pounds) notched his sixth win of 2018 in the 41-36 Cougar victory, while sophomore Keith H...
Niwot cheer coach Alexis Bellinger isn’t shy about praising her team’s performance at this year’s Class 4A State Cheerleading tournament, held Dec. 8-9 at the Denver Coliseum. “The girls were in a great place,” said Bellinger, who co-coaches the team with former Erie cheer assistant Catherine Linhardt. “Everything was falling into place. We went out to perform, and they had an absolutely flawless routine. They had zero deductions. Absolutely every stunt, every tumbling, and every jump hit, and w...
Eric Hejl (pronounced “Hail”) has been named the new Niwot High School boys basketball coach, replacing Preston Hardy, who resigned in June for family reasons, including a new baby on the way and club team coaching responsibilities. Hejl, a varsity assistant under Hardy last year and the freshman coach two years ago, will assume the reigns on a one-year interim basis, according to Athletic Director Chase McBride. Hejl works at Lake Valley Golf Course as a PGA apprentice and assistant pro when he is not coaching basketball. He grew up in Ran...
Michelle Welsh, an American Family Insurance agent for 31 years, was recently recognized for providing outstanding customer service under the American Star Excellence in Customer Experience Certification Program. This doesn’t mean she is above giving a leg up to younger, less experienced agents, especially when that agent is her own daughter, Brie Welsh. Brie has been an independent American Family Insurance agent for two years and enjoys the proximity to her more experienced mom since they shar...
Taking a page from national politics, the Bolder County Bored of County Commissioners (BOCC) has approved a Parks and Open Space (POS) Department suggestion to “drain the swamp.” The move comes on the heels of the Planning Commission’s (PC) rejection of a proposal to change the Bolder County Comprehensive Plan (BCCP) in a way that would have allowed higher density housing in the area. When the memo, obtained by the Twin Lakes Owl Group (TLOG) through an open records request, first was disco...
As the membership drive for the Niwot Community Association kicks into high gear, the town is sporting banners at some town entrances, posters and brochures in Niwot businesses, and Burma Shave-style signs along Niwot Road -- all urging Niwot area residents to join the NCA. The NCA membership committee also has sent out emails to current members reminding them to renew and soon will mail renewal brochures to current and potential new members. The committee also plans to post a membership reminder on NextDoor, an online social network for...
The resurgent Niwot girls swim team capped off an exciting regular season with a ninth-place finish at the Class 4A state championships last weekend, the first top-10 finish since 2014. Senior diver Maddie Barkow wrapped-up her remarkable career with a third-place finish, while freshman Payten Irwin nabbed two top-five finishes on the day, in the 100 butterfly and 200 freestyle relay. Niwot brought back finalists to eight of the meet’s twelve events, including two of the three relays. For h...
Before the season began, Niwot girls swimming Coach Sarah Stamp knew some of her freshmen had the potential to make an impact on the team right away. But even she was impressed by freshman Peyton Irwin’s high school swimming debut at the elite Colorado Coaches Invitational on Dec. 17. The Niwot ninth-grader qualified for state in three events, including the 100 butterfly, where her time of 58.22 seconds was good for fifth overall, and broke the school record of 58.32. Irwin also qualified in t...
Last week, the Colorado Supreme Court denied a request from subdivision residents in Boulder County to review the Court of Appeals’ decision in a suit against the county concerning the paving and upgrades of subdivision roads. This decision marks the third time the courts have stated that BoCoFIRM — the organization representing residents — cannot sue the county commissioners over the condition of rural subdivision roads. In June 2016, the Colorado Court of Appeals upheld the district court’s dismissal of the lawsuit. Following last week’s...
Senior Tommy Stager is making a statement in his final season as a Cougar. On Dec. 9, at the Charlie Lake Dual Tournament in Cheyenne, Stager earned his 135th career victory, surpassing older brother Nick’s school record of 134. But that was just one of the 3-time state qualifier’s milestones on the young season. On Dec. 8, Stager won his first high school match at 145 pounds, pinning Longmont’s Zane Lovato. He wrapped up the busy weekend with a second-place win at the Charlie Lake Invitational...
The county’s road and bridge department has their official budget for 2017, a total of roughly $39 million. Of those monies, $13 million will be spent on flood recovery in the James Canyon area, the Wagon Wheel Gap, bridges along the South St. Vrain including the primary bridge and roads in the Four Mile Canyon area. “Those are the major projects that will get started,” Boulder County Director of Transportation George Gerstle said. “As we get the bids in and how much they’ll actually cost, we’ll go back to the commissioners for the funding. “B...
On Oct. 29, the Niwot boys and girls cross country teams squared off against 19 schools from around the state for the 2016 4A cross country championship meet at the Norris-Penrose Event Center in Colorado Springs. “It was an exciting day, for sure,” Head Coach Kelly Christensen remarked. “But we wanted more.” The Niwot girls finished eighth overall, while the boys team took 14th. Coach Christensen was sanguine about the results, but clearly felt his teams could have placed higher. “The gi...
The Colorado high school cross country season is heading into its final stretch, and Niwot runners are staking their claim to be among the state’s championship contenders. On Oct. 7, the teams traveled to North Lake Park in Loveland to run in the Northern League meet, where they once again faced district foes Silver Creek and Longmont. Niwot junior Kenny Lang placed seventh overall in the boys race, with a time of 16 minutes, 34 seconds, while senior Jenna McCaffrey extended her streak of top 1...
Niwot senior Jenna McCaffrey is having a break-through season. “Jenna’s a tenacious runner,” Head Coach Kelly Christensen said. “She’s getting her swagger back.” In the five races she’s run this season, McCaffrey has finished among the top 15 in each one, her best a fourth-place finish at the RE-1J District Meet on Sept. 14. Last weekend, McCaffrey finished 11th in a field that included many of the state’s top runners at the Metro State/Mountain Vista Invitational. “I think her body’s finall...
Even before the season began, Coach Kelly Christensen knew his team was capable of a breakout performance at the RE-1J District Meet. Held at Sunset Golf Course in Longmont, the meet is limited to schools in St. Vrain Valley, and serves as a quasi-district championship. So Christensen made sure his runners were prepared mentally as well as physically. “We didn’t really change our training regimen last week, but we did bump up the intensity psychologically,” he explained. It was a tactic that...
By most measures, 2015 was an atypical year for Niwot High School's cross country program. Despite some strong individual performances, both the boys and girls teams finished well out of championship contention at last year’s 4A State meet. But for new head coach Kelly Christensen, last year’s results don’t mean much. “There are a lot of talented runners on this team,” said Christensen, “A top three to five finish at state this year is very achievable.” Christensen is certainly no stranger to t...
There’s nothing like a good summer vacation to renew and satisfy the working soul, especially when you venture to the great outdoors. This summer, our week-long trip consisted of backcountry camping in the Grand Tetons and camping in Yellowstone, which weeks of planning went into. I didn’t grow up camping and I’ve only tent camped a couple times in my life, and I was about to embark on a whole new, unknown journey into the woods. If you’re considering visiting the Grand Tetons and Yellows...

This is the first time in team history that Colorado Junior Crew has qualified boats to row in the US Rowing Youth National Championships. Toles and his partner, Zander Maitland of Fairview High School...
