For the Niwot High School track and field team, "slay" isn't used in jest. The trendy phrase is instead an acronym that head coach Maurice Henriques hopes can be a guiding force: Sacrifice. Loyalty. Accountability. Yearning. Every one of Niwot's approximately 140 athletes will be repping S.L.A.Y on the back of their T-shirts this spring season. "Those are things that we've been talking about from the first day of practice," Henriques said. "We're asking our coaches and we're asking our athletes...
It was only this past summer I debated pursuing a career in journalism. Two weeks later I got invited to a journalism conference in Washington, D.C., and next thing you know, I knew what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I am 16 years old and a junior at Niwot High School. I play hockey in the fall as a goaltender, and I play rugby in the spring as a scrum half. Outside of school, sports, and friendships, there is journalism. I've been taking photos for over 2 years now, but I've been...
VOLLEYBALL Morgan Daugherty (Niwot) played in 21 of 27 matches for South Dakota School of Mines as a freshman this season. One of her best efforts came at Black Hills State during a 5-set victory Sept. 6. Daugherty recorded 12 kills in 29 attempts for a .310 hitting percentage. CROSS COUNTRY Samree Dishon (Niwot) helped New Mexico to a...
Over the course of a season, not many other events mean more to the Niwot High School wrestling program than the Gary Daum Classic. The annual wrestling tournament, previously known as the Boulder Valley Invitational, returns to Niwot High on Saturday, Jan. 7 for the 10th time running under its current title, a name given in honor of longtime Cougar head coach Gary Daum, who passed away in 2012 following a battle with cancer. Daum arrived at Niwot High in 1977 as a special education teacher. He...
I moved to Niwot in 1975 from Nebraska (did you know that Niwot used to be in Nebraska Territory?), and I knew it was the right place when I went to a Niwot High School football game....A lady in the stands recognized me... because she used to babysit me....in Nebraska. Since then I've been an attorney, a volunteer firefighter, a coach, a swimming instructor, a Sunday School teacher, a band member, a sportswriter, and now an editor. My wife Susan and I have three children and one bonus son, alon...
Monte Comer was a kid with a lot of friends. He was a fixture on his baseball team in the Gunbarrel Lefthand Valley Recreation Association, or GLVRA as it was known (now Niwot Youth Sports). He had buddies on his basketball team, his Boy Scout troop, his class at Niwot Elementary School and everywhere else. “Back then I don’t think they had the Pee Wee Football they have now,” said Monte’s sister, Jamie Comer Smith. “I believe he would have played football.” That was the mid-1970’s,...
Coach Stephen Dimit's Niwot High School boys varsity soccer team took its 2022 regular season record of 12-3 into the playoffs again where they bested D'Evelyn High School by a score of 3-0 in the first round, and Steamboat Springs High School by a 3-2 margin in the second before falling to a very strong Northfield High School team 2-0 in the quarterfinals. Despite that disappointing loss it was a great season for the Cougars as they won their conference (4A/3A Longs Peak) decisively with a...
Construction has begun on the Monarch Improvement Project, which will bring a permanent building to Hangge Fields at Monarch Park for the first time in the 35 years the ballfields have been in use. The project was launched by Niwot Youth Sports (NYS) to build a permanent structure to house the concession stand, provide a storage facility, and replace the port-a-potties with real bathrooms. NYS officials believe these improvements will be a great addition to the community, as the non-profit provi...
Despite still being a "growing" team, the Niwot High School cheer team and head coach Christina Ayers are looking forward to what she expects to be a competitive showing at the state spirit championships. "We're fighting for finals this year," Ayers said. "We have a show, we have the girls that are fighting for it and ready for it. I think it's attainable - it's whether or not we get out there on the floor and we do what we know we can do." The Cougars, who were unable to compete in the Blast...
The Niwot High School football team finished the season last Friday, ending with a record of 3-7, which put them out of playoff contention. The Cougars had five all-conference second-team players -- Nico Kemp, Gavin Burrage, Chad Volf, Harrison VanSelus, and Garret Eker -- with kicker Matt Hansen being their only all-conference first-team player. Niwot came into the '22 season after finishing the last campaign 4-6 and were looking for a record above .500. Everything looked promising when they st...
Raiden Stahly, Niwot High School football's only four-year varsity member this season, played his final high school snap on Nov. 4 in the Cougars' finale against Denver North. It was a mix of emotions, but all of them were real for the tight end/outside linebacker. "Going into it I was excited and sad," said Stahly, who also lent his voice to the National Anthem prior to the game. "I saw the end of the season and (my) high school career ending. (There are) a lot of good people on my team and...
Niwot High School football ended its season Nov. 4 in a matchup against the Denver North Vikings. In one of their closest games of the season, Niwot had a fighting chance all the way up to the final seconds. Niwot's passing game looked a lot stronger this week, highlighted by receiver Parris Lee who caught multiple passes for a total of almost 80 yards. Niwot's run game was also moving as running back Jesus Rosas strung together multiple long runs for a big day on the ground. On the other side...
Niwot Youth Sports hosted three simultaneous flag football championships on Sunday, Oct. 23, at Niwot High School. At the end of the day, three new Super Bowl Champions were crowned. In the JV Division, the Bills and the Colts battled it out in the wild card game early in the morning. The Colts started the year rather cold, with only one victory in their first six games, but made a roaring comeback late in the season and kept that streak going with a win over the Bills. Next up were the Broncos...
Stephen Dimit, head coach of Niwot High School boys soccer, was sad to see the season end, but proud of his players after they suffered a loss in the quarterfinals of the state 4A playoffs. "We knew it would be a really tough game," Dimit said. "They just have so many ways to beat you," referring to Northfield High School, which won the 4A championship last season with a perfect 20-0 record. The Cougars battled Northfield throughout the game, but came out on the short end of a 2-0 score. The...
With a beautiful fall and another Great Pumpkin Party behind us, Niwot prepares to honor military veterans with banners along 2nd Avenue and in Cottonwood Square and with a ceremony at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 6. Although "a picture is worth 1,000 words," the stories behind the banners are worth even more. They tell the stories of military men and women with Niwot connections serving all over the globe from World War I until present day. A few of their stories are below. Burton Gale Bergeson,...
Niwot High School played its ninth football game of the season on Oct. 29, taking on the 3-5 Riverdale Ridge Ravens on the road. Things were heated between the division rivals as both teams were looking for a win to stay in playoff contention. The game marked the return of Niwot quarterback Chad Volf, which gave the Cougars hope that they could get back on track, but in the end, Niwot fell to the Ravens, 34-3. Niwot started the game by kicking off and after eight plays, the Ravens were able to...
For the first time this season, cold and cloudy weather settled in at Niwot High School on Sunday morning, Oct. 16, for the last week of regular season games for NYS Flag football. Temperatures hovered around 50 degrees for the first game kick offs. The All-Pro division had a bye week, due to the school holiday weekend, and the Rookie division Vikings scrimmaged each other as they continued to work on football fundamentals. Despite the chilly temps on the field, there was plenty of heat as...
Niwot High School took on a big game this Saturday against the 2-5 Mead Mavericks. It was the final home game of the season for the Cougars and also their Senior Night. Seniors Kevin Chen, Matt Hansen, and Raiden Stahly were all celebrated before the game alongside cheer and marching band seniors. Stahly did double-duty by singing the National Anthem before the game. Niwot struggled to get their offense going as they started sophomore Weston Domich at quarterback with Chad Volf still on...

The Niwot football team traveled to Fredrick on Friday for the sixth game of the season, but came home with a 49-0 loss, moving to 3 and 3 on the season. Although they have struggled over the past two weeks, the Cougars haven't faltered from their game plan, staying true to what they want to do this season. Niwot started the game off with the ball, but after driving it to the 30 yard-line, failed to convert on a fourth down pass. Frederick scored in only two plays with a 50-yard rushing...
The Niwot High School football team is now 3 - 2 on the season, but unlike last week's win over Battle Mountain, the Cougars were the team on the short end of a lopsided score. Niwot lost 50-7 in a game that was filled with both offensive and defensive struggles. Niwot started the game receiving the kickoff, but a dropped kick return put the ball inside of the Cougars' own 10 yard-line. It didn't get much better as the offense went three and out and had to punt from their own 10 yard-line....
Led by their five captains, Paris Stephens, Makenna Noterman, Fernanda Laguna-Perez, Jordan Tajchman, and Aditi Patel, Niwot Cheer is gearing up for a big season. Niwot boys soccer coach Stephen Dimit described the setting for Niwot's first cross-town rivalry soccer game under the home lights on Friday, Sept. 17. "It was a cool environment, a cool atmosphere." The Cougars took on the Raptors around 7 p.m. "We kind of knew we needed to be at our best," Dimmit said. "There are so many connections, they play together in the spring." The game featured an aggressive push by Niwot to keep the ball in the Silver Creek side of the field. The strategy seemed to...
Outside linebacker Gavin Burrage wasn't going to allow Niwot football to lose its first-ever game played on campus. Going up against Skyview, Burrage's barrage held the Wolverines to only one touchdown in a historic 15-6 win on Sept. 9. "I thought it was our team's best game," Burrage said. "The energy was really high, we were all performing our best and it was just a great game for me." Including Burrage, two other juniors on Niwot's defense have stood out, not only in the Skyview game, but...
It took 50 years, but Niwot High School finally played and won a truly "home" football game. And a steady mist throughout the evening didn't seem to put a damper on the attendance, or the team's overall performance. The 50th anniversary of the opening of Niwot High School brought out former students, players and faculty from across the years as the school celebrated with a 15-6 victory over Skyview in the first varsity football game ever played at the school on Sept. 9. The school, which opened...
The Niwot Cougars came up big this weekend in a historic game, winning their homecoming game and the first ever-home game in the school's 50-year history. Niwot alumni from as far back as 1972 showed up to the game, still repping their school spirit almost 50 years after they graduated. While the community banded together, the Cougars put on a show that didn't disappoint. Niwot started with the ball against Skyview High School in Thornton (2-1 , and almost put a scoring drive together, but it...
A cheer tunnel of young Niwot Youth Sports athletes assembled on the new Niwot High School football field last Friday to welcome their favorite NHS football players onto the field for the first time ever. Many stayed on a soggy and cold night to watch Niwot High's football team win their first homecoming game played at the school. Two days later, on a bright and sunny morning, it was their turn to play. The Niwot Youth Sports flag football athletes made their debut at home at Niwot High School...
It was a successful Homecoming week for Niwot High School. Football won on its home turf, volleyball swept Silver Creek, boys tennis went 1-1, softball got a win and for cross country, both the girls and boys teams cruised to first place in the RE-1J District Meet. The cross country boys were led by four seniors who finished from third place to sixth in the order of Jeremy Gillett, Frederick Ambrose, Stefan Haug and Carlos Kipkorir. And even though the first and second place individual finishers...
As if NHS homecoming week events weren’t exciting enough, Niwot’s softball team played in a tournament at Barnes Softball Complex in Loveland. The schedule stretched through four games from Friday to Saturday, with Friday’s play leaving the girls rushing to participate in the Homecoming Week parade and then get to Friday night’s first home football game. Saturday’s games were canceled due to rain and poor field conditions, which was a mix of disappointment and relief for players who no longer had to rush after the games to change into form...
Gearing up for this week's Niwot High School 50 year celebration, we present a FLASHBACK from 1972: • Kids in Niwot were playing the first video game, PONG and hacky sack. • The cost of goods was low but there was a recession on the horizon. If you were shopping in July 1972, you probably would have been pleased with prices overall. A 5-pound cantaloupe cost the inflation-adjusted equivalent of $3.86. A rib-eye steak was $2.49 a pound, the equivalent of $17.50 a pound today. • Peter Max sneak...
When the 2022-2023 school year kicked off at Niwot High School this year, the faculty, staff and students offered a warm welcome to a new registrar, a new counselor, and eleven new teachers. The faculty have accepted positions in math, social studies, French, drama, and science. Four of the new recruits took time away from their busy fall schedules to talk about their experience and their first impressions of the school. Erin Smith, an instructor in math, was born and raised in Louisville, Color...
Niwot High School senior Jessi Lehman clearly remembers her experience as a trumpet player in middle school. "There were definitely a lot more boys in the trumpet section," Lehman said, "Pesky middle school boys. And being one of only two girls, I always had a feeling they didn't really think I should be there." But the stereotypical attitude regarding musical instruments and gender that once dominated the music scene did not have a negative effect on the senior's desire to pursue her interests....
After starting off the football season with a win against Greeley Central, the Niwot Cougars followed their week 1 win with a week 2 loss to the Thornton Trojans, 32-27. Niwot's first drive consisted of run after run, including a 16-yard run by sophomore Hayden Shaw. Late in the drive, Niwot quarterback Chad Volf threw a bubble screen to junior wide receiver Mats Lehan who went 16 yards for an opening drive touchdown, starting the game with a 7 to 0 lead. The Trojans got the ball but couldn't...
Chad Volf's versatile skill set at quarterback proved perfect for Niwot football's offense in their 22-16 season opener win over Greeley Central on Aug. 26. Volf rushed for two touchdowns and threw for another to get his junior campaign off to a strong start. Still, though, Volf hopes the Cougars can do even more damage moving forward. "I think Friday went really well," Volf said. "I feel like on offense we could have had a couple more touchdowns, but I think the three we had were pretty...
The Niwot High School Cougars opened their football season under the Friday night lights at Everly-Montgomery Field in Longmont in a back-and-forth game against the Greeley Central Wildcats, coming away with a 22-16 win in a hard-fought contest. The Cougars took the opening kickoff and brought it back to their 20-yard line. The Niwot offense produced a solid drive up to the Wildcat 20-yard line, with a combination of dives into the line and screen passes. But the drive would be cut short in the...
There was plenty of sunshine and throngs of bold colored, crisp NFL flag jerseys running around the outfields of the Biff Warren Baseball Complex on Sunday, Aug. 28, for opening weekend of the fall 2022 Niwot Youth Sports Flag Football season. Two outfields at the complex are transformed each Sunday into regulation size NFL flag fields for the 13 teams competing this fall. Each team chooses an NFL team to represent, complete with reversible jerseys in team colors and with team logos. Back to run...
Mary Beth Almquist was secretary-treasurer of Niwot High's very first graduating class. Almquist was also the first person to graduate from Niwot High School in 1974. Almquist's memories of graduation day 48 years ago remain sharp. "Graduation was held inside the school in the gymnasium because the outside grounds weren't finished," Almquist said. "There were open fields behind the school and we had a huge parking lot but that was about it." 'Almquist had the distinction of being first to...
The Niwot Community Association (NCA) and Niwot Business Association (NBA) have launched the fourth annual Veterans Day Banners Project to honor veterans with Niwot connections. Participants purchase a durable banner honoring an active duty member or veteran of the United States Armed Forces. Banners feature a picture of the honoree, the branch of service, rank and years of service. The banners are hung from poles on 2nd Avenue and in Cottonwood Square during the weeks before and after Veterans...
After posting a four-win season in 2021, third-year Niwot football coach Nik Blume aims to continue to build the program that had not won more than three games since 2008. With only four seniors on the squad, the Cougars will be very young. "We have a really talented junior class," Blume said of the players who have come up through the program during his tenure. "It's our biggest class. We also have three or four sophomore kids who will contribute." Blume hopes to make up in speed what he lost...
In what could have been considered a transitional season following the graduation of eight seniors, the Niwot boys soccer team continued its winning ways last fall and reached the second round of the Class 4A state playoffs. Last season was fun, said seventh-year head coach Stephen Dimit, but the Cougars are now setting the bar a little higher. "This is a hungry year," Dimit said. "They had a lot of fun last year, but I think they also really want to build on what they started. That's a great...
As we approach NHS's 50-year anniversary celebration on Sept. 9, we take a look back at the Cougar mascot and its history. The first graduating class of 1974 selected the mascot. Sources say that it was nicknamed 'Carrie the Cougar.' While the "Carrie" moniker has been dropped, cougar pride remains fierce. A May 25-26, 1974, Longmont Times-Call newspaper clipping shows a picture of the unveiling event when a stuffed cougar was presented to the school. Marybeth Almquist Williams remembers the...
The University of Colorado’s 17th class to be inducted into the CU Athletic Hall of Fame was announced in June and it features former Gunbarrel resident Dick Tharp, who was the school’s athletic director from 1996-2004. Interestingly, Tharp and his staff created the Athletic Hall of Fame early in his tenure as AD. Among his many accomplishments at CU, he hired former head football coach Gary Barnett in 1996, oversaw a $42.6 million expansion to Folsom Field and developed a long-term plan for the athletic department. “I'm honored by it, humbl...
As the song says, "You never count your money when you're sittin' at the table, there'll be time enough for countin' when the dealin's done." For 2003 Niwot High School graduate and current professional poker player Adam DeMersseman, the dealing at this year's World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event is done. The count? A cool $262,300 in prize money and bragging rights as one of the top tournament players in the world. DeMersseman survived a grueling 7 days at the Main Event this July, taking...
Just as NFL rookies start reporting to training camp in mid-July all across the country, the young athletes of Niwot Youth Sports were recently treated to an opportunity to start prepping for the upcoming flag football season. While it doesn't seem like football weather, anyone who has played football growing up knows that the summer months are where workouts and practices increase in intensity. It's where the work is done and champions are created. So how do you start building champion...
It's a busy time for alumni behind the planning of the Niwot High School 50-Year anniversary celebration. While still in the planning stages, there is a tentative schedule of events (posted below). A group of alumni created a page on Facebook dedicated to planning events leading up to the Sept. 9 celebration. The Facebook group is keeping the history alive, posting newspaper clippings and articles from the first years of the school. People commenting are making connections after many years and t...
This fall will look a little different for Niwot senior Ben Classen. After spending the past two years playing football, the Niwot High incoming senior has decided to shift his complete focus to track and field. Classen believes his best chance of securing an athletic scholarship will come through track, a sport that he excelled in last spring. His decision also factored in the elimination of any potential for injury he could have suffered playing football. Last season, Classen was named...
