Ok. It’s that pumpkin spice latte time of year. Seriously, that’s a big thing. I guess when the weather gets colder, people just have a hankering for pumpkin. It used to be just pumpkin pie and pumpkin bread. Now it’s pumpkin candles, pumpkin sauces, pumpkin soup, pumpkin cheesecake, pumpkin muffins, and even pumpkin ravioli. But let’s get back to that harbinger of the holiday season, pumpkin spice latte. Remember when your choices for coffee were black or with cream and/or sugar? That was it....

Ok. Daylight Savings Time strikes again. You might remember how I feel about it. But here's the thing. We gained an hour. But did we really? No. We just go to bed later and get up earlier. Or is it the other way around? In any event, the days seem shorter, the wind is ripping the leaves off the trees, and the weather is bound to get colder. We all know what cold weather around here can mean. But I had to learn the hard way. When I first moved to Colorado from sunny California in March of that...

Ok. I have Covid. I have no idea where I got it since I barely go anywhere. But what I do know is that Covid is no fun. And not funny. I know some people have mild cases, others have serious symptoms, and many have long term effects. In my case, so far, it is like a bad cold. I'm fine. I am one of those lucky people who rarely get sick. My husband, on the other hand, just has to hear that a cold or flu or a stomach ailment is "going around" and he starts coming down with every symptom. So being...

Ok. Halloween is looming. It’s the first holiday wave. Undoubtedly, some of you have been buying and eating candy since Labor Day. Many have been making costumes, buying costumes or just thinking about costumes for weeks. Those messy pumpkins have been carefully carved. It is a big deal for all the kids (and adults) to go trick or treating and bring home all that loot just to consume it all in one big tummy ache. But let’s review. Halloween is not for everyone. Basically, people fall into two...
Brian Dietzen, a 1996 Niwot High School graduate, has gone on to a Hollywood acting career, where he is known mainly for his recurring role in the popular drama “NCIS.” Born in Illinois, he moved to Colorado and started acting in Niwot Elementary’s Christmas pageant and various school plays. After graduating from Niwot High School where he performed in several theater productions, Dietzen went to the University of Colorado at Boulder to study theatre and get his BFA in acting. He got his start...
My mother teases me that I don’t cry during movies—whether feel-good ones or purposefully sad ones. “You didn’t even cry during “Toy Story!” she’ll joke. For the record, readers, I did shed a few tears when Andy donated Woody, Buzz and the gang to that little girl. But she isn’t entirely wrong, I don’t cry with movies or books very often at all. So it was a surprise to find myself with massive crocodile-tears rolling down my cheeks upon finishing “Dora–Doreen,” by Sophia Tova Stone. It was even...

Ok. Fall has arrived. Or, as I like to say, "autumn" has arrived. What happened to that word "autumn?" It's a pretty word for a pretty time of year without the negative implications of "fall." "Fall" sounds a bit dangerous, don't you think? I don't need reminders of the icy roads ahead. Fun fact: The autumnal equinox occurred on Sept. 23 and marks the end of summer and the beginning of autumn. The sun is directly above the equator on the equinox. That is all well and good from a scientific...
In his professional life as an award-winning National Geographic photographer/film director and co-founder of the non-profit SeaLegacy, Niwotian Andy Mann is on the road and in the water 200 days a year. His time away is a mix of adventurous photography expeditions, public speaking, and marine conservation efforts. The things he has seen and done are big - life-altering and world-changing - like being at this year's United Nations General Assembly where he was part of a team that compelled 68...

Ok. Remember when you were a kid and all you wanted out of that long road trip to some great destination like Mount Rushmore was to stop at a motel for the night and get into the swimming pool? I do. My parents and six children traveled across the country at least five times. Each time, all I could think about was whether the next Motel 6 or Best Western had a swimming pool. And we would happily forgo dinner to throw on our bathing suits and jump into an often over-chlorinated indoor swamp of a...

Michael Tomich and Patty Machen have owned The Old Oak Coffeehouse since 2017. In 2019, they also formed The House Blend Band. The original three-piece band started small, performing inside the coffee house. But soon, they had to move outside to perform because there was not enough room inside for the band and the audience. The band would eventually grow to the current eight members, and often features additional cameo appearances by Old Oak Coffeehouse staff members. The House Blend Band...

Ok. Why does bread have such a bad rap? Bread has been around since the beginning of time. Basically, flour and water, it is a staple in one form or another around the world. The centerpiece of any gathering, a symbol of community and hospitality, bread is a mainstay of every meal. Toast for breakfast, sandwiches at lunch and a good hunk of bread at dinner to wipe up your gravy. At what point did bread become a bad thing? Today bread is often considered a high carb, low fiber, low protein, low n...

Ok. Have you gone to any of your high school reunions? You know, where you reconnect and reminisce with old friends? I just got back from mine in California where I saw people I hadn't seen for 35 years. In the days prior to the event, I was filled with anticipation, excitement, and a bit of anxiety. I was really looking forward to seeing people who were a big part of those formative years. And let's be honest, I wanted to look good. We need to unpack this a bit. Let's start with why I decided...
It feels like it's been a while since I've gotten a fiction selection from Inkberry Books-and I'm so happy it was historical fiction, which is one of my favorite genres. Cindy Burkart Maynard's "Esperanza's Way" was an absolute delight. It's the 13th century and the story takes place between what would eventually become Spain and Italy. Esperanza is a poor orphan with a gift: she has uncanny intuition, which comes in handy in her work as a herbalist/healer. Moreover, she's not just poor...
As we transition into autumn, one of the most popular events in Niwot is coming to a close – the weekly "Dancing Under the Stars" event. A free dance lesson of varying genres followed by a public dance takes place every Friday during the warm summer evenings from June to the end of September. Originally scheduled to end Sept. 22, a "rain date" has extended the season through Sept. 29 with contra dance. Dancing Under the Stars started out in Boulder at the University of Colorado, but when C...
On Aug 19, singer, songwriter, and teacher Martin Marks, music director at The Niwot Gig (https://theniwotgig.com/), released his new music video and single, "All The Dad She Has." Working with producer Chris Laney, who lives in Sweden, Marks has been coordinating the mastering and mixing of the single long-distance. Laney, a childhood friend and fellow musician, reached out to Marks after hearing an audiobook recording of a podcast Marks produced. The podcast charts Marks' adventures in...

Michael Tomich and Patty Machen and their House Blend Band closed out a series of five summer street performances on Sept. 9 before an appreciative crowd. The co-owners of The Old Oak Coffeehouse performed a wide variety of well-known tunes on 2nd Avenue in Niwot, with Tomich on keyboards and vocals, and Machen on violin. Other family members and friends joined in the fun for the free event, partially funded by the Niwot Local Improvement District. The last concert featured young musicians from...
