  • The Story Behind the Name: Left Hand Grange

    Leigh Suskin and Kathy Trauner|Jun 22, 2022

Not unlike other local businesses and attractions, Chief Niwot is the namesake for the Left Hand Grange as the Arapaho word for "left-hand" is Ni-wot. What is interesting about the building known as the Left Hand Grange Hall is its rich history. The local Grange organization, known as Left Hand Grange No. 9, initially operated out of the Batchelder School House southwest of Niwot, and received its charter on January 24, 1874. It is currently the oldest active Grange in Colorado. The Granger...

This past Thursday evening's Rock & Rails featured Loveland's Wendy Woo as the opener. Woo is a Colorado singer-songwriter renowned for her guitar work, particularly her unique style of percussive interludes coupled with vocals and guitar. With over thirty years of performing...

  • June Review: Black Earth

    Hannah Stewart|Jun 22, 2022

This month's Inkberry Books Review is special for a couple of reasons. First, it's very timely considering current events; Black Earth by Jens Mühling is a nonfiction account of the author's journey through Ukraine. Second, the book was translated from German by Inkberry's very own Gene Hayworth. Nonfiction is a tricky genre-some books feel more like academic materials and others are entertaining. The most entertaining tend to be memoirs or works in which the imagery is so vivid, that it reads...

  • The Story Behind the Name: Murray Street

    Leigh Suskin and Kathy Trauner|Jun 15, 2022

The plat of Niwot was filed in the Boulder County records on March 30,1875, by Porter T. Hinman and Ambrose S. Murray, laying out streets, alleys and lots on both sides of the railroad tracks, but Niwot was never officially incorporated as a town under state law. When Porter Hinman helped to lay out the town, the surrounding region was being settled by men whose names are still associated with the area. • Eating for a Healthy Planet - First in a 2-part series

    Kathy Trauner|Jun 15, 2022

Editor's note: This is the first in a 2-part series. Next week: Regenerative Agriculture. Organic - Does it Matter? Food shopping is not for the faint of heart these days. The meat counter alone seems to require a master's degree. Should we buy organic? Free range? Grass-fed? Pasture-raised? And what about produce? Local seems important. So does organic, but is all organic the same? Oy! By the time we hit the eggs aisle, we've got catastrophic decision fatigue. Maybe it's not as daunting as all...

  • Holes in our Life

    Master Trooper Gary Cutler|Jun 8, 2022

One of my favorite movies is Groundhog Day. In the movie, Bill Murray has a line in one of his reports that is also a favorite of mine. “Well, it’s Groundhog Day…again.” That resonates with me more than you know. Well it’s pothole season…again. After a Colorado winter we see an influx of potholes around the state. This is not the fault of road crews, it's just our weather tearing into the roads as it does every year. So why bring up these axle killers? They can also be dangerous for drivers. Often, I see people driving along the roadway and...

    Hannah Stewart|May 25, 2022

Inkberry Books came through with yet another fascinating story. Justin Courter's The Heart of it All is a little bit mid-life-crisis, a little rebellious and extremely engaging. We first meet narrator John Ritter shortly after he's moved back to Cincinnati, or "Cincinasty," as he calls it, in order to help his grandmother who has Alzheimer's. But this homecoming is more difficult than he perhaps expected-in addition to taking care of his grandmother, he works for a crook of an old "friend," is...

John Chivington and his troops at Sand Creek have been documented in many books, including Boulder author Margaret Coel's "Chief Left Hand." Chief Niwot banded together with other tribal leaders in a commitment to finding peaceful relationships with white settlers. They included Niwot's brother, Neva,...
