In the wake of the Marshall Fire, many homeowners might be wondering how to be better prepared in case of future urban wildfires. Urban wildfires like the Marshall Fire, while relatively rare in Colorado when compared to the incidence of forest fires in the state, can be incredibly destructive and fast-moving, as the events of Dec. 30 proved. This type of fire is not entirely unprecedented as both the Black Forest Fire and Waldo Canyon Fire saw the destruction of homes at the wildland urban...

On the gusty morning of Thursday, Dec. 30, Niwot realtor Deborah Read Fowler and her family were on US Highway 36 headed to Breckenridge when they noticed something alarming: a plume of dark smoke rising on the outskirts of Boulder. For the rest of the drive, she and her husband stayed tuned to radio reports, which only confirmed their worst...

In 2010, Nicole and Gerry Wienholt made a dream into reality as they opened the first Yoga Pod in Boulder. During that time, Yoga Pod quickly grew and was even franchised so that the Wienholts could spread their passion and joy with others. They have since left that path and, 11 years later, decided to focus their energy on opening a second location in south Longmont. "We truly believe yoga is life changing and transformational. It feels incredible to be able to offer yoga to this community,"...

Many Americans will make some sort of decision related to health and wellness, especially with the ever-present COVID pandemic wreaking havoc in our lives. “New year, new me,” as the saying goes. But in speaking with Scott Meier of Haystack Muay Thai and Maurice Henriques of REAL Training, “new me” seems like it’s extending beyond one’s physique. “Sometimes people get caught up in all the results,” said Henriques, a former CU athlete who is also t...

Emergency response, at first, largely focused on preserving life and evacuating people from homes, stores and more. Actively fighting the fires was difficult early on, especially...

For a growing share of Boulder County residents, the 2021 holidays brought at least one unwelcome visitor-the SARS-CoV-2 virus. In the week between Christmas and New Year's Day, local testing sites recorded nearly 3,000 new positive cases*, one of the highest weekly totals at any point during the pandemic. That has driven the testing positivity rate to 20.2% and the seven-day case rate to 757.5 per 100,000 residents, also unprecedented figures. According to state and county health officials,...
After weeks of unseasonably dry weather, a frigid winter storm brought several inches of snow and below-zero temperatures to Boulder County on New Year's Eve. While that was good news for the first responders battling the Marshall Fire, it was less so for local birds, who found their favorite watering holes inaccessible on the biggest party night of the year....

After a series of false-starts and long delays, the 14-space public parking lot on the west side of downtown Niwot could be open to cars in the coming weeks, according to representatives of the Niwot Business Association, who said the final permitting issues have been settled, and just one piece of the puzzle-solar bollard lights-remains. "Mark Ruzzin with Boulder County is working on the final contract for light installation," NBA Vice President Mary Coonce said. "Once that is complete, we can...
We have watched the scenes from Colorado Springs (Waldo Canyon Fire in June of 2012) and California where wildfires reached into our towns and cities destroying hundreds of homes in a matter of hours. Most Front Range inhabitants would never have thought that it would happen so close to home. Our idea that wildfires are confined to forested areas and during summer has been challenged and is no longer the norm. We need to be prepared and able to recover should the unthinkable happen. Our... Full story

But when Jeremy stumbled across this particular puppy on the Human Society's website, he knew that pup was the one. Megan agreed as so...

In the Dec. 15 issue of the Left Hand Valley Courier we incorrectly attributed the mural in the Niwot Road underpass to Ellen Haswell. While Ms. Haswell did help with many aspects of the mural, it was primarily the work of Giselle “Bre” Thiele. We apologize for any confusion. Ms. Haswell is the author of “A Little Book of Words for Those Who Grieve.... Full story
Just as it should be beginning to look a lot like Christmas, a weather phenomenon more commonly seen in the summer months made an appearance over Niwot. On Dec. 15, a double-rainbow appeared west of town as a fast-approaching snow squall came over the mountains, bringing cold air, gusty winds, and a very brief spate of precipitation....
Gunbarrel Estates resident Bill Ringer has eagle eyes and an eye for eagles. According to Ringer, both bald and golden eagles have been showing up more frequently. The two bald eagles pictured here were seen at sunset on Dec. 18 and a golden eagle was viewed just two days earlier. "There are always more in the winter, but they can be seen here any time of year," Ringer said. I grew up in Boulder and remember when a bald eagle sighting was front page news. The eagle comeback is a great success...

As 2021 draws to a close, we look ahead to 2022 with hopes for a big (and better) year. However, few people likely have the same definition of a Big Year as local author and birding expert, John Vanderpoel. In May, Vanderpoel published his book "Full Chase Mode: Big Year of Birding in North America" which follows the 365 days he spent chasing a birding record in 2011, in an endeavor known in the birding world as a "Big Year." For birders, doing a Big Year is a kind of bucket list project. For...

Behind any community event in Niwot, there is an unsung army of volunteers, handling details and logistics that most attendees overlook. Among them is the Niwot road crew, a group that has been dedicated to keeping the town's parades and festivals pedestrian-friendly since 2014. "We started with seven, and it blossomed from there," Dick Piland said of the group he founded as Niwot Community Association president nearly a decade ago. "It was amazing. We had people calling up insisting they get...
On Tuesday, Dec. 7, Niwot resident Steve Herring found three bobcats lounging on Paiute Avenue. He was walking his dogs at 9 a.m. when he saw the felines, two lying together on a neighbor's front lawn, while the other sat by the shoe of a gutter. Herring watched them in awe for about five minutes, and none of the bobcats minded him or his dogs. Herring said he has heard other rumors of a bobcat appearing in the same backyard and another one walking behind Niwot High School. As of now, these...

A temporary traffic signal has been installed at Paiute Avenue during construction so residents and school staff and visitors can safely exit the...
When I was small there was a catchy little ditty about an echo. Little sir echo, How do you do? Hello (hello) Hello (hello) ...which has now given me an earworm. But never mind. Several weeks ago, I was on a stroll with my good friend Glinda. As we often do, we walked through the underpass for Niwot Road. We always enjoy all the glorious mural paintings down there, and Glinda let out a lovely expletive, which showed her appreciation for the magnificent artwork. As she spoke, there it was, a...
