  • Local resident compiles a history of Niwot restaurants

    Deborah Cameron|Oct 27, 2021

Remember when Niwot Tavern used to be Flanagan's Pub? Or when Pinnochio's used to be Treppeda's? Or when 1914 House used to be Reverend Taylors? Though some may not realize it, Niwot has always been home to a large number of high-quality, diverse restaurants. Recently, local resident Laura Bloom has started to document the progression of one establishment to another beginning as far back as the 19th century. Bloom is keeping her history on a website, Serving Boulder, which she created in 2010....

  • Operation Gratitude wants your Halloween candy

    Deborah Cameron|Oct 27, 2021

Children can bring home an enormous amount of candy after trick or treating on Halloween. Not only can it be more of a load than they can carry easily -- that much candy isn't healthy. Now anyone who is looking to save calories and keep that candy from hanging around for weeks, has an option for putting it to use. Operation Gratitude is Niwot's Halloween Candy give-back program. Extra candy can be dropped off between November 1st and November 6th at the DRF Realtors Office behind the Old Oak Cof...

  • Theft on 2nd Avenue

    Bruce Warren|Oct 27, 2021

Liz Gould, proprietor of boutique shop Little Bird on 2nd Avenue in Niwot, reported the theft of several large rings from the store's jewelry display case last week. The rings were displayed on a rolled velvet bar that held six or seven rings. "They were all on one display, so someone just picked it up and walked away with it," Gould said. "They were sizes 10 to 12, which usually fit men. We have no idea who did this. Our jewelry cases have been open for the last two years since it is so much...

    Bruce Warren|Oct 27, 2021

Volunteers from Rocky Mountain Christian Church in Niwot came out on a brisk fall Saturday morning Oct. 23 to clean up the Niwot Children's Park after a busy summer. The crew, young and old, picked up apples from the ground, trash and tumbleweeds, and gathered up a few lost items as well. A few trees were trimmed, and a new load of wood chips delivered on Friday was spread around the play structures. The crew (l to r): Suzanne Johnson, Nathan Brix, Nora Swedberg, Anna Swedberg, Brett Swedberg,...

  • Halloween mythconceptions

Carol OMeara, Colorado State University Extension Boulder County|Oct 27, 2021

Halloween horrors aren't always connected to the spirits of the dead, even though the ancient holiday is. Some of the spookiest creatures on the planet are products of human imagination trying to explain the workings of Mother Nature, or using Mother Nature to nefarious ends. A quick look at the history of some myths and misconceptions shines a light on frightful tales. The legendary witch hunts of Salem in 1692 may have root in a fungus, Ergot (Claviceps purpura), which invades rye and other gr...

  • Amendment 78 would transfer power of custodial funds to legislature

    Hannah Stewart|Oct 27, 2021

Every year, the state of Colorado receives money–custodial funds–from the federal government, settlement dollars from lawsuits and through gifts and grants. These funds are generally set aside to fund particular legislative programs, for example, emergency wildfire or COVID funds. These monies are currently handled by the state treasurer and individual agencies who oversee the disbursement to various programs. However, Amendment 78 seeks to change this model and instead have all custodial funds go through the state legislature. The ame...

Earlier this month, nearly 50 full-color banners featuring the names, photographs, branch, and service years of military members past and present with local connections were installed along 2nd Avenue and in Cottonwood Square where they will hang through Veterans Day. • Community Pet Spotlight (George and Janice, Oct. 27)

    Oct 27, 2021

Meet George and Janice These very good feline friends would enjoy being adopted into their new home together and are available at a 2-for-1 price. While we do not believe that George and Janice are truly bonded, at 10-years-old they have cohabitated for several years and going home together would be ideal. If George and Janice are adopted separately, they are required to go to a home with another cat. Both kitties would like to find a home with children that are high school aged or older. To...

  • Left Hand Laurel – Victoria Keen, Deborah Read Fowler, and Dawn Server

    Vicky Dorvee|Oct 20, 2021

Victoria Keen, Deborah Read Fowler, and Dawn Server were busy bees getting together one humming hive of a festival on August 28th. The first ever Niwot Honey Bee Harvest Festival was buzzing with activities from a speaker series to a spelling bee, informational tables to retail booths, free bee antennas to candle making classes. All of the themed moving parts made for a fabulous new festival that will live on, and for that the Courier honors these three women's creativity and hard work with a...

  • Boulder forms library district advisory committee

    Hannah Stewart|Oct 20, 2021

This committee is an advising body, rather than a decision-making body, and the council chose 12 representatives out of 37 online applications. The application process largely focused on applicants' demographic data (age, ethnicity, income), and asked questions about how applicants planned to best represent the various perspectives in and around Boulder. Joni Teter, longtime library...

"The people make it good," longtime Niwot realtor and event sponsor Pat Murphy said. "Seeing all of the costumes that everyone comes up with and working with all of the volunteers is my favorite part." • Planning a windbreak

Sharon Bokan, Colorado State University Extension Boulder County|Oct 20, 2021

As we head into the windier and hopefully snowier time of year, now is the time to make plans to plant a windbreak on your small acreage next spring. Windbreaks make your yard less windy, prevent snow drifts across the driveway and in corrals, prevent soil erosion, provide protection and shade for your livestock and provide wildlife habitat. In our area, windbreaks should be planted on the north and west sides of a property to block our winter winds. The principle behind windbreaks is the trees...

  • Niwot's windy Oktoberfest

    Deborah Cameron|Oct 13, 2021

A windy Saturday didn't dampen Niwot's Oktoberfest spirits. The weather did, however, cause tossed signs, fallen chairs outside of The Wheel House, and fewer people participating in outdoor activities during the Oct. 9 event. "It's been rough," said Eric Bergeson, owner of Wheel Works, The Wheel House, and the food truck La Musette. "Normally, Oktoberfest has a tent. We did our best. This morning at 8:30 a.m. we tried to put a tent out in front of our place and it just obviously wasn't working....

  • This little piggy went to market

    Mary Wolbach Lopert|Oct 13, 2021

If you're a frequent driver on Highway 52 you have probably noticed a new farm stand, Lazy J. The "J" is for John Scaggs, who is anything but lazy. Scaggs raises pigs, which he's been doing since 2015. "I run a unique, pretty exotic set of genetics," Scaggs said. The backbone of his herd is the Mangalitsa breed, which is from Hungary. These pigs are very well adapted to the Front Range. They are all dark colored pigs with woolly coats that take about 50% longer than commercial pigs to get to...

    Kim Glasscock|Oct 13, 2021

Work on a proposal to create a community garden space in Niwot is starting, Niwot Community Association board member Diane Zimmermann told NCA members at the Oct. 6 meeting. "The first step is to survey our NCA members to gauge interest and gather ideas, and then put together a community group made up of Niwot residents and NCA members interested in getting this project started," Zimmermann said. "We see so many Niwot residents with beautiful gardens and we could use their expert advice and...

    Hannah Stewart|Oct 13, 2021

On Nov. 2, Coloradans will be asked to vote on a measure that would raise taxes on marijuana sales, divert funds from the State Trust Lands and create a new state agency. This agency, the Learning Enrichment and Academic Progress Program (LEAP) would provide out-of-school learning and enrichment opportunities for children between the ages of 5 and 17 years old. LEAP would then certify individuals and/or groups as educational providers for these out-of-school programs. Licensed teachers who wish to be providers would also have to go through the...

  • Final round: An emotional goodbye to 'the golf course for everyone'

    Patricia Logan|Oct 6, 2021

First Hole A hawk whistles as it lands on the giant cottonwood just behind the first tee. It's an appropriate send-off as I begin my final round at Haystack Mountain Golf Course. As always, there is something that takes my attention away from the little white ball when I'm here, whether it is the wildlife, peach and purple sunsets, stately trees or the tawny slopes of the odd bump on the horizon, Haystack Mountain itself. This late summer day is the last time I'll play the nine-hole course off...

Kennedy using one of his core ideals of service, justice, freedom, courage, and gratitude as inspiration. "I've always associated him with the courage to go to space," McClure, 26, said of the contest's namesake. "I think space travel is incredible, and he was the first one to do...

  • Protecting a legacy: Spear Lodge Man to undergo preservation

    Jocelyn Rowley|Oct 6, 2021

Plans to preserve and repair the deteriorating tree carvings along Niwot Road have been under consideration for years, but after the untimely death of artist Eddie Running Wolf in the summer of 2020, the project took on new urgency. Now, 14 months later, those efforts are officially underway. On Oct. 2, a group of volunteers from the Niwot Business Association moved the oldest and most damaged of the three, "Biitoheinen (Spear Lodge Man)", from its roadside location to a nearby workshop where it...

  • Familiar Face – Joanne Neville

    Vicky Dorvee|Oct 6, 2021

The Courier wanted to hear about this Niwotian's life – past, present, and future. Left Hand Valley Courier (LHVC) - Where are you from and what brought you to the area? Joanne Neville (JN) - I grew up on the East Coast, mostly i...

  • October book review: The Afterlife Road

    Hannah Stewart|Oct 6, 2021

I'm back with another Inkberry Books review and I'm very excited to share my thoughts. Author Brice Austin takes readers on seven relatively short journeys with various characters in The Afterlife Road. These are stories that, at first glance, may seem mundane--a guy who doesn't want anything to do with the family business, another mourning for a beloved family pet, or a girl who almost drowns while taking a pit stop during a bicycle race. Austin is a talented author: he is descriptive and knows...

    Bruce Warren|Oct 6, 2021

The purpose of the meeting will be to give each organization, including the LID, a better understanding of each organization’s purpose and short-term goals, as well as start a conversation about how best to share resources. Eight of the nine LID committee member...

Often served, and appreciated, during the Rock & Rails concert series, it's the second craft beer with a Niwot connection to take home top prizes in its category. Hannah Stewart|Sep 29, 2021

The group was made up of students, educators and community volunteers, all sharing one goal: categorize and learn about apple trees as part of this year's Apple Blitz, sponsored by the Boulder Apple Tree Project (BATP). "I'd say there's no other fruit that's adapted to this country as the apple," said artist and blitz...

  • Niwot seeks to have zero waste events

    Hannah Stewart|Sep 29, 2021

Niwot's summer concert series Rock & Rails is a special event. But it doesn't just provide the setting for people to chat and hang out while listening to live music. Rock & Rails was also the catalyst for Niwot to push toward a standard of zero waste. Zero waste means limiting trash as much as possible, usually by swapping out single-use packaging, utensils, etc. for either recyclable or compostable options. "There's no such thing as total zero waste," said Jill Whitener, one of the people invol...

    Bruce Warren|Sep 29, 2021

Thirty Niwot-area residents, both young and old, traveled to the site on Saturday, Sept. 25, by bus exactly 17 months after the original excursion was derailed by the pandemic. What originally started as two busloads of Niwotians dwindled to a little more than half a bus, due to COVID concerns and the difficulty of finding a rescheduled date that fit everyone's schedule, but...

  • Gardening is exercise

Carol OMeara, CSU Extension Boulder County|Sep 29, 2021

I recently underwent a health assessment which involved a lengthy questionnaire on how I care for myself. It was part of a getting acquainted process with a new medical company. Things went smoothly until the interviewer asked about any exercise I routinely do. I said "Gardening." She nodded and said she was interested in what I did for exercise, ignoring my input on my green thumb activities. I reiterated, "Yes – I garden. Every day. Vegetable gardening." Again, I got the nod without any n...

  • Niwot Olympian Elise Cranny headlines homecoming festivities

    Jack Carlough|Sep 22, 2021

Back when she was a budding high school track star, Elise Cranny never thought she would be honored as she was during this year's Niwot Homecoming celebration. The 2014 Niwot graduate and 2021 U.S. Olympian was given a hero's tribute during the annual parade and football game on Sept. 17. Before finishing 13th in the Olympic 5,000 meter race, Cranny helped Niwot win two 4A girls track titles and competed collegiately at Stanford University. She said that with no fans allowed in Tokyo, the...

  • Left Hand Laurel – Thom Lynch

    Vicky Dorvee|Sep 22, 2021

This month's Left Hand Laurel goes to Thom Lynch. Lynch moved to Niwot in September 2018 and decided the best way to meet folks and to make a difference was to jump in with both feet. So, the new guy in town joined the Rotary Club of Niwot and not long after became the president-elect of the organization. Lynch had been an active Rotarian for a year before he moved to Niwot, after being recruited to the organization by his then girlfriend who was the president of a chapter in Syracuse, NY "I...

  • Burden inducted into Boulder County Business HOF

    Bruce Warren|Sep 22, 2021

Though his induction into the Boulder County Business Hall of Fame was delayed a year due to the pandemic, Niwot resident Cotton Burden was never at a loss for words when the time arrived Sept. 16 at the Embassy Suites hotel in Boulder. Burden accurately predicted that he would have trouble getting through his remarks without choking up, much as he did during soccer banquets during his 11-year tenure as Niwot High's head coach. He thanked his many supporters who were present. Among those Burden...
