  • Task force gives voice to those most impacted by pandemic

    Patricia Logan|Dec 16, 2020

Those hit hardest by the pandemic are not often the most vocal, the most visible. A group of eleven people from disproportionately affected communities are sharing their experiences to bring awareness and invite solutions to help the most vulnerable get through these hard times. The COVID-19 Community Task Force was formed in August as a way for Boulder County government and local nonprofits to better understand the daily realities of those who were being most impacted. The group gets together...

    Michael Rickicki|Dec 16, 2020

The coronavirus pandemic forced churches across America to close their doors. The shutdown caused church leaders to look towards different platforms to spread their message. Many churches switched to online platforms like Facebook to live-stream Sunday services, including Niwot United Methodist Church on Lookout Road. Reverend Emily Kintzel was appointed as the new pastor of Niwot UMC on July 1, 2020, in the middle of the pandemic. Pastor Emily entered the role while the church still struggled t...

    Deborah Cameron|Dec 16, 2020

December has brought a range of new art to the walls of Niwot businesses. These micro exhibits give needed visibility to regional talent during the holidays, and the exposure is appreciated by both the artists and community members alike. This is the case for Amanda Maldonado, the artist currently featured at Winot Coffee. Maldonado shared that her style has grown a lot in 2020 and that she's leaning more towards community-based work. "I wanted to find a way to feel more connected to the rest...

  • County Commissioners hold hearing to update oil & gas regulations

    Hannah Stewart|Dec 16, 2020

Last Thursday, the Boulder County Commissioners held another meeting to discuss Article 12 of the Land Use Code, which essentially updates regulations related to oil and gas development. No additional public testimony was taken as it had been allowed at previous meetings throughout the year. Many of these previous meetings were attended by Niwot High’s own Environmental Club, and the group was even mentioned by Commissioner Elise Jones later in the meeting. “We hear you,” Jones said. “Many of you [not just the NHS environmental club, but ind...

  • Protecting your plants from larger mammals

Sharon Bokan, Colorado State University Extension Boulder County|Dec 16, 2020

In previous articles, I have written about the damage rodents and small mammals cause to your landscape plants, but larger mammals such as deer, elk and bobcats can damage landscape plants too. Deer and moose are browsers, meaning they predominantly eat forbs (broadleaf plants) and shrubs and trees but also graze grasses. Elk are mainly grazers but browse forbs and shrubs when grass is lacking or unavailable. Fruit trees such as apples are a favorite browse. These mammals can also use your...

  • Community Pet Spotlight (Dec. 16, Lana & Curly)

    Dec 16, 2020

Meet Lana & Curly. This pair of five-year-old kitties are a very bonded pair that are looking for a new forever home together! Both Lana & Curly are very sweet though they are feeling a bit shy here in the shelter. They would love to find a quiet home where they can be given time to settle in and adjust to their new family. Lana & Curly would prefer a home with older children and will likely do well with another cat or a polite dog in their new home. Call (303) 772-1232 for more information or...

"We try to deliver to places that don't get as many donations," co-owner Stacy Szydlek said. "A lot of the well-known shelters get overloaded with donations while the smaller ones are left without, so we do...

  • An ancient poem and modern photos come together in a coffee table book

    Patricia Logan|Dec 9, 2020

It is hard to find such a wide variety of interests and talents in one person, let alone see them all come together in one book. But Niwot resident Sandi Siegel has combined her love of yoga, mythology, modeling, and the Sanskrit language to create a new coffee table book, "Sanctuary Song." It's based on a poem written between the years 700 and 750 A.D. and features the Hindu goddess Tripurasundari. "This particular story is set to the three stages of a woman's life. • Niwot resident challenges herself to write a new song for each day in November

    Hannah Stewart|Dec 9, 2020

You've probably heard of "no-shave November," which raises awareness for cancer research, but have you heard of "new-song November"? Instead of a charitable campaign, it's a creative one in which singer-songwriters challenge themselves to write a new song every day of the month. Niwot resident Emma Schaefer, who graduated in 2018 from Shining Mountain Waldorf, was one participant this year, after seeing posts about it online for the past few years. "I learned about this challenge from Lily...

After halting operations for over a month in the spring, Troop 161 shifted to remote mode with virtual meetings. Dickens said the troop was mostly quiet over the summer and missed its planned trip to Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico. When Boulder...

  • Gifts for Gardeners

Carol OMeara, Colorado State University Extension|Dec 9, 2020

From simple pleasures to outright splurges, the season for giving is upon us. As you rush to buy gifts for your gardeners, stop to consider what type of green thumb they have. This will help you narrow down your choices in making that small purchase go a long way to happiness. Experienced gardeners are a little harder to shop for since we have the basics. But that doesn't mean we don't like a load of manure. A big pile of poo would have appalled my mother, but I think it's a very sweet gesture....

  • Niwot Market owners prepared for COVID surge

    Michael Rickicki|Dec 2, 2020

Back in March, streaks of panic buying due to COVID-19 left stores barren of cleaning supplies, bathroom essentials and canned foods. Niwot Market owners were forced to limit purchases of certain items to one or two per person. The supply chain slowed down as big vendors shifted to the bigger markets, leaving owners Alison Steele and Bert Steele to look towards quickly developing new relationships with smaller vendors. However, the Steeles are confident now that they have the resources necessary...

  • Niwot alum comes out with Christmastime-COVID song

    Hannah Stewart|Dec 2, 2020

If someone were to start belting out "Jingle Bells" in the middle of June, it's a safe bet that someone else would yell something along the lines of, "Stop that, it's not Christmas yet!" Similarly, there have been numerous posts on social media where people have put up their trees in early to mid-November with the caption, "Is it too early?" But with COVID ravaging the world for the past nine months and people being cooped up inside, time has seemed a bit stranger this year. People have been...

  • Trooper Tips: It's winter driving time

Master Trooper Gary Cutler, Colorado State Patrol|Dec 2, 2020

We have a couple of snowstorms under our belt already this year, and we have had our standard crashes that come with those storms. Just as you need to get used to your sea legs when sailing, you need to be ready for snow when driving and how your vehicle will respond to different surface textures. So, these are the topics I want to hit on in this article this year: freezing rain, windblown snow, and compacted snow. Freezing rain scares me the most. I've been doing this job for 17 years now, and...

    Pattie Logan|Nov 25, 2020

The bad news is that more people than ever are in Boulder County hospitals with COVID-19; the good news is that patients have a better chance of avoiding the most serious or deadly outcomes compared to when the pandemic began. “We have been thrilled with the progress we’ve made since March as health care providers, learning how we take care of these patients,” said Boulder Community Hospital Vice President of Operations and Chief Nursing Officer Jackie Attlesey-Pries. “We are able to support them in a different way than we first did in March,...

  • Pumpkin Pie Project brings taste of tradition to those in need

    Jocelyn Rowley|Nov 25, 2020

Due to the recent resurgence in COVID-19 cases, many Thanksgiving traditions are off the table in 2020. For the last three weeks, Mary Capone of Simply Clean Eats has been hard at work crafting and baking 125 holiday desserts for the Boulder and Longmont Food Rescue organizations, which distribute nutritious food to "feed hungry, homeless, and low-income populations directly". "We're all...

  • Rubies of the Pine - aka Cranberries

Deryn Davidson, Colorado State University Extension Boulder County|Nov 25, 2020

With Thanksgiving almost upon us, I thought it would be fun to take a closer look at the tart, red fruit that is a staple on most Thanksgiving menus. Whether you like to make your sauce from scratch, or you prefer to open a can and let the cylinder of wriggly jelly slide out, the cranberry is something we should all know more about. • Vitamin D and other immune boosters may help fight off COVID-19

    Patricia Logan|Nov 18, 2020

Chances of getting COVID-19 are as high, or higher, than they've ever been during the pandemic, but there are simple steps people can take to be prepared if the virus strikes. Research suggests that Vitamin D may play a role in the severity of COVID-19 cases. "I've read a couple of studies that specifically show that morbidity goes up directly with COVID with low levels of Vitamin D," said Dr. Janine Malcolm, a naturopathic doctor and licenced acupuncturist at Niwot Natural Medicine. "Most...

"I am happy that most of our businesses are surviving for now, and we've had very few casualties or actual closures, but obviously...

They're doing everything they can to be careful. While the race, due to its nature, will be held outdoors, there are other things organizers are planning to keep things safe....

Store cereal, rice, flour, noodles, chips and other foods in either metal or heavy plastic containers with tight lids. Immediately clean up any food spills. Keep the area where...
