  • Troop 161 honors fallen scout

    Jesse Murphy, Editorial@lhvc.com|Feb 9, 2017

Late last year, Boy Scout Troop 161 held their last Court of Honor for the fall. This year’s event had a room full of heavy hearts. David Louwers, a member of the troop who was tragically killed in a plane crash last June, was posthumously given the rank of Eagle Scout. His parents — Robert and Christina Louwers — were in attendance as David’s name was added to the plaque with the other names of the troop’s Eagle Scouts over the years. He was also given the Spirit of the Eagle Award, which is... Full story

  • Twin Lakes plan is flawed

    Bruce Warren, Editorial@lhvc.com|Feb 9, 2017

The Boulder County Planning Commission has an opportunity to reconsider its earlier approval of the change in the Boulder County Comprehensive Plan that would pave the way for the City of Boulder and the Boulder Valley School District to build sorely needed affordable housing, up to 240 units, in the Twin Lakes area of Gunbarrel. For decades the City of Boulder has implemented policies which, while making Boulder a very desirable place to live, drive the cost of housing up, to the point where middle class families, not to mention lower income...

  • Vandalism at Niwot Children's Park

    Jeremy Jaeger, Editorial@lhvc.com|Feb 3, 2017

The Niwot Children’s Park has apparently been vandalized, according to a posting from Jan. 24 on the Niwot Children’s Park Facebook page. One of the park’s most notable and unique features are the small, custom-crafted, painted stone creatures—such as bats, insects, frogs, and lizards that inhabit the area—in various locations on the play structures and other elements throughout the park. Several of these stone animals have been severely damaged or destroyed, some appearing to have been chis... Full story

  • Beanies for babies at BCH

    Jeremy Jaeger, Editorial@lhvc.com|Feb 3, 2017

If you or someone you know gave birth at Boulder Community Hospital in the last year or so, there’s a good chance that newborn left the hospital wearing a hat knitted by longtime Niwot resident Hallie Pasko. It started, said Pasko, as she was “trying to figure out what to do with leftover bits of yarn,” the remains from other, larger knitting projects. Pasko knew the standard policy at BCH is to send newborn infants home with a free beanie, and she quickly put two and two together. Once she g...

  • The eagles have landed: High numbers of bald eagles seen at Lagerman Reservoir

    Jeremy Jaeger, Editorial@lhvc.com|Feb 3, 2017

Lagerman Reservoir is a little-known gem of the Boulder County Parks and Open Space system. Well, at least that’s the case for the human residents of Boulder County. It’s a different story for the local and migratory bird communities, and for one bird in particular. This winter bald eagles have turned Lagerman Reservoir into their local stomping ground. Bald eagles are a well-known success story of the environmental and nature conservation movements. By the mid-20th century the national eag...

    Jennifer Simms, Editorial@lhvc.com|Jan 29, 2017

Clubs abound at Niwot High School, but one new offering, the Interact club, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Niwot, stands out because of its focus on service. “I’ve participated in various service opportunities, only to be disappointed by how impersonal and unrealistic they sometimes are,” said Vidhya Dev, NHS senior and club secretary. “Interact, however, is completely different. It is a club filled with people that truly want to help others.” The club started in the summer of 2015, after sev...

    Pam Martin, Editorial@lhvc.com|Jan 28, 2017

National fraternal organizations, including the Freemasons and Kiwanis International, are experiencing a decline in their memberships—with older members dying off and difficulty convincing younger recruits of the relevance of these long-standing institutions. • Growing old gracefully

    Pam Martin, Editorial@lhvc.com|Jan 23, 2017

It’s a loaded phrase for women of a certain age to be told they’re “aging gracefully.” Usually it means they look young for their age, as if showing signs of growing old is a bad thing. Since the ramifications of the aging process are inevitable, that message has fostered a multi-billion dollar industry aimed to counter its effects (projected at $216 billion for 2016, according to Zion Market Research). As a result, there’s a myriad of elixirs and treatments geared to augment, suction, peel, boost, tuck and enhance. “[Companies are] making mill... Full story

A “very lovely” park bench donated by the Niwot Community Association remains “rather homeless” in Niwot as NCA members work to find an agreed-upon location for the bench, NCA Board members were told at their Jan. 11 meeting. The metal park bench, which was donated by the NCA in 2016, is in storage until a permanent location can be found. Originally the NCA had discussed locating it near 1914 House restaurant on Second Avenue, but that location turned out not to be suitable. So now the NCA is working with the Cottonwood Park West Homeown...

  • New Year: New Context

    Pam Martin, Editorial@lhvc.com|Jan 6, 2017

People tend to feel strongly about New Year’s resolutions. While the New Year might seem like an arbitrary marker to some, the turning of the calendar page can act as a kind of reset button for those good intentions that fell l...
