  • How David Perry runs his life

    Vicky Dorvee, Editorial@lhvc.com|Aug 9, 2018

The act of a person, animal or thing that runs is what you will find in the dictionary when you look up the word running. For David Perry, running is that and so much more. It embraces what he does – twice a day; what his job revolves around – partnering with Adidas on creating their apparel and footwear; how he helps others – motivating groups of runners in the community. It’s a conduit for expressing creativity and using his business sense – pouring it into his own clothing brand, and it di...

  • Letter to the Editor

    Aug 9, 2018

To the Editor: RE: Von’s Colorado Concepts Development on 2nd Ave. We are residents of 3rd Ave. in Old Town Niwot and many of our homes border the alley corridor between the commercial zone on 2nd Ave. and our residential zone on 3rd. Many of us have lived on 3rd Ave. for over 30 years. We read the article in the Courier regarding the mixed-use project proposed by Von’s Colorado Concepts on the parcels at 364 2nd Ave. and 376 2nd Ave. We were particularly struck by Von Eschen’s comment acknowledging neighbor’s concerns about “the alley sit...

    Jocelyn Rowley, Editorial@lhvc.com|Aug 9, 2018

Thanks to his regular gig as a Rock & Rails gargoyle, Griffin Harris was able to check two major items off his summer to-do list: earn 10 community service hours, and have some fun. “I’m trying to get a rank, so I started doing this to get Boy Scout hours,” Harris said. He is hoping to earn his first and second-class ranks in Niwot Troop 161. “But, I’ve already surpassed 10 hours, so I’m just doing it because I love volunteering here. It’s so fun.” Harris especially enjoys hearing from ap...

  • Rabies in Colorado

    Harry Hildebrandt, Editorial@lhvc.com|Aug 4, 2018
    1

The risk for rabies in Colorado has been increasing, and with so many wild and domesticated animals around, it’s important to know how to best prevent rabies and how to manage it when it occurs. The CDC website instructs bite victims to immediately wash any wounds. “One of the most effective ways to decrease the chance of infection is to wash the wound thoroughly with soap and water.” It’s also mentioned that rabies can only be contracted when saliva or nervous system tissue makes direct...

  • Local leasing scene healthy and changing

    Vicky Dorvee, Editorial@lhvc.com|Aug 3, 2018

Taking the pulse of commercial leasing within Niwot and Gunbarrel, there was a general consensus among local experts that the business environment is in a robust state overall. The recurring themes were that vacancy rates are low, and that brick and mortar retail businesses are harder to attract than businesses in the service and food sectors. Some prominent spaces on the market or soon to be on the market include locations on Second Avenue in Niwot, and within Cottonwood Square and Gunbarrel...

  • Learning CPR saved boyfriend’s life

    Vicky Dorvee, Editorial@lhvc.com|Aug 2, 2018

Gunbarrel’s Isaiah Cormier is telling a lot of people a pretty crazy story these days and hoping that more lives are saved as a result. That Cormier was struck by lightning when it didn’t seem terribly threatening is the start of the story. But, the fact that his girlfriend Juliette Moore, who had taken a class in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in the past month, was able to restart his heart - twice - was an even more remarkable event. On the second day of a camping trip, just as rain beg...

  • Rock & Rails Volunteer of the Week: Jesse Horn

    Jocelyn Rowley, Editorial@lhvc.com|Aug 2, 2018

When asked about his favorite part of being a Rock & Rails gargoyle, Niwot sophomore Jesse Horn was quick to answer. “I get to boss other gargoyles around,” he said, chuckling. As a third-year volunteer at the weekly concert series, the 10th-grader has certainly earned that privilege. Often working alongside twin brother Thomas, Horn serves as one of the gargoyle team leaders, and is instrumental in keeping the grounds tidy during his shifts, whether from his own efforts hauling bins and collect...

  • Bonsai tradition comes to Longmont

    Harry Hildebrandt, Editorial@lhvc.com|Aug 2, 2018

Trees in Colorado tend to be wild, scraggly and often sprout directly from stone faces in the mountains. They’re used to unpredictable weather, frequent droughts and the occasional fire. All of these events can change the way they look and grow, the same way that human beings are shaped by experiences. The Longmont Buddhist Temple at 606 Pike Road at the corner of Pike Road and Highway 287, includes some beautiful bonsai trees donated by Ted Matsuo, a bonsai artist. Matsuo was born during a diff...

  • Boulder County Circles Campaign works to eliminate poverty one family at a time

    Dani Hemmat, editorial@lhvc.com|Jul 28, 2018

We have a lot here in Boulder County—high quality of life, beautiful surroundings, friendly people, a high intellectual capacity and abundant cultural activities. We also have poverty. Right now, one out of every seven Boulder County residents is living in poverty. That’s 44,000 neighbors, coworkers, and schoolchildren who are struggling to get by every day. While it’s easy to equate poverty with the homeless person standing at the intersection, holding a clever sign, the sobering truth is that...

    Jocelyn Rowley, Editorial@lhvc.com|Jul 27, 2018

Officials from the Mountain View Fire Protection District are asking for public input on a proposed mill levy increase that they say will help offset the costs of serving a rapidly growing population in east Boulder and south Weld counties over the next ten years. At a July 17 public information meeting at the Niwot Fire Station, Assistant Chief Keith Long and Finance Director Tonya Olson made a case for the potential tax hike, which will fund what they described as urgently needed equipment...

  • Deadheading in July (and other important but low-energy gardening tasks)

    Dani Hemmat, Editorial@lhvc.com|Jul 27, 2018

You tilled, planted, hoed and weeded, so all that’s left to do is sit back in the July heat with a tall glass of lemonade and enjoy those beautiful blossoms. Well, not if you want to do it right. With a little bit of daily maintenance, you can enjoy nature’s second bloom as summer’s heat wears on. That daily task is known as deadheading, and it has nothing to do with dreadlocks or tie-dye shirts, unless you want it to. Deadheading is the term for the simple process of removing the dead or faded...

  • Hanging up my hat

    Jesse Murphy, Editorial@lhvc.com|Jul 26, 2018

Managing Editor’s Note: When the Left Hand Valley Courier partnered with a Kansas newspaper almost four years ago to take the newspaper from a monthly to a weekly publication, we had the great good fortune to work with Jesse Murphy, who helped guide us in that process and eventually became our editor. Although he lived in Kansas, Jesse brought a valuable perspective and years of journalistic excellence to the Courier. He mentored writers, traveled to Colorado to get to know the community, and wrote many outstanding articles for us. When our p...

  • Rock & Rails Volunteer of the Week: Jackson Erb

    Jocelyn Rowley, Editorial@lhvc.com|Jul 26, 2018

Jackson Erb first showed up at Rock & Rails for the same reason that most people do—to see a great concert. Little did he know that his love of music would lead to a regular community service stint. “Jill [Whitener] came to me at the right time,” Erb said. “I was just getting into volunteering at the Humane Society, and I liked coming here, so I just started doing it.” Now in his fifth season, Erb is one of the most veteran Rock & Rails Gargoyles. Over the years, he’s helped the clean-up sq...

  • Fowler meets sweet sales goal

    Harry Hildebrandt, Editorial@lhvc.com|Jul 21, 2018

Every winter, there’s a good chance you’ll see young girls outside of your local grocery stores and similar establishments selling cookies. Scouts are encouraged to sell as many boxes of cookies as they can, but there can be significant variance in sales between different troops and different individuals. This year, the highest seller in the local troop, number 70658, was Francesca Fowler, sitting pretty at 1,288 boxes sold. Francesca said that while she “wanted a challenge,” she was also dr...

  • Where in the world…?

    Nellie Nibnose, Editorial@lhvc.com|Jul 21, 2018

Congratulations to our very observant explorers, Zoey, Zeke and Cleo Baker. According to proud dad Tom Baker, the intrepid trio “took note of last month’s winner being in the paper. When they noticed this issue of LHVC on the counter and saw the Where in the World picture, they knew exactly where it was. Then promptly jumped on their bikes to take this picture.” Good work kids. You were outside, getting exercise in a place that you obviously know very well. Our other fearless explorer is Chris...

  • Local farms recover from hail damage

    Harry Hildebrandt, Editorial@lhvc.com|Jul 20, 2018

The hail storm three weeks ago tore through Niwot, destroying roofing and carpeting the ground in ice. Plants in local gardens were stripped as well as those in nearby farms. Though some crops, like the corn in the fields just east of Niwot, have made excellent recoveries, other patches of ground would be mostly barren if not for the hard work of the farmers who manage them One such farmer is Michael Moss, of Kilt Farm, just northwest of Niwot. Kilt Farm supplies Niwot, Boulder and Longmont...

  • Left Hand Laurel – Holly Owens

    Vicky Dorvee, Editorial@lhvc.com|Jul 20, 2018

Holly Owens notices when things need some of what she’s good at – adding a little sparkle. When she moved to Gunbarrel, she sensed Heatherwood Elementary School (HES) could blossom with her loving touch. Because of her enthusiasm and hard work, Owens has been selected as this month’s Left Hand Laurel. Owens had never heard of Gunbarrel when she lived in South Boulder. But when friends moved to the area and the Owens’ family was invited for a barbeque, they too were lured by the larger yards a...

Niwot Community Association board members are drafting possible guidelines for groups and individuals requesting grant aid from the NCA. “We’ve noticed an uptick in funding requests to groups in Niwot and it would be good to have some guidelines in place for our own process,” said NCA board member Johnny Barrett at the NCA board’s July 11 meeting. Barrett and board member Lance Goff were tasked in June with developing draft grant guidelines. In general, NCA board members agreed that grant requests should be made in person. They also agreed...

  • Fire blight widespread in Gunbarrel and Niwot

    Dani Hemmat, Editorial@lhvc.com|Jul 19, 2018

Have you looked up into your apple tree this year and noticed some of the leaves and branches are brown and withered, almost as if they’ve curled up and died? Chances are, it’s fire blight. Fire blight is an endemic disease caused by the bacteria Erwina amylovora, and right now it’s having a banner year in Gunbarrel and surrounding areas. Typically affecting fruit trees such as apple, crabapple and pear, fire blight can also infect quince, mountain ash, hawthorn and serviceberry trees. While...

  • Rock & Rails Volunteer of the Week: Merrick Blondeau

    Jocelyn Rowley, Editorial@lhvc.com|Jul 19, 2018

Sunset Middle School seventh-grader Merrick Blondeau is the Rock & Rails Volunteer of the Week. Like his fellow gargoyles, Blondeau’s reasons for volunteering at Niwot’s weekly concert series are both altruistic and self-interested. “Jill [Whitener], the person who runs the gargoyles, usually has a hard time getting Gargoyles, so I do it for that,” he said, before adding. “There’s also free food.” Now in his third year, the Sunset seventh-grader is among the most veteran gargoyles. He...

  • Letter to the Editor

    Jul 13, 2018

Editor’s note: This letter was addressed to the Courier’s intern reporter Harry Hildebrandt, who reported on the 2018 Great Goat Escape. Hello Harry, The goats that escaped in the Lookout Road and North 71st Street area on June 21st had been rented by us for their field mowing capabilities. Having them escape as a gang of five (two adults and three wee ones) and make their way up to Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church parking lot was a rather traumatic and anxious incident for me, not to men...

    Jesse Murphy, Editorial@lhvc.com|Jul 12, 2018

For the last seven years, Cultural Care Au Pair has partnered with the Boulder Rural Fire Protection District for fire safety training for au pairs working in the U.S. that is required by the state. In the late spring/early summer, to return the favor, local au pairs, who are young adults from other countries with childcare experience and a good command of the English language, gather to cook an international potluck dinner for the firefighters. Each au pair makes a dish that represents the au...

  • Rock & Rails Volunteer of the Week: Marco Ramirez

    Jocelyn Rowley, Editorial@lhvc.com|Jul 12, 2018

Gargoyle Marco Ramirez has both high-minded and pragmatic reasons for volunteering at Rock & Rails. For the Niwot High 10th-grader, helping collect waste at Whistle Stop Park is not only a great way to help the environment, it also helps to foster the town’s “community spirit.” Then there are the more tangible benefits. “If you’re a gargoyle, you get two free slices of pizza from Abo’s and a free drink,” he said. “It takes away a few hours of the day and you don’t have to worry about what...

The Niwot LID Advisory Committee got a taste of winter at its July 3 meeting, and not just because it was a bracing 56 degrees in the conference room at the Mountain View Fire Station. Though Christmas is still half a year away, a twin bill of holiday-themed funding requests topped the evening’s agenda, giving the committee a preview of some changes in store for the traditional kick-off to the town’s holiday shopping season. Boulder County liaison Mark Ruzzin kicked off the meeting with a rec...

  • Going with the flow - sensibly

    Vicky Dorvee, Editorial@lhvc.com|Jul 9, 2018

When it’s springtime in the Rockies, the runoff from melting snow seems to supercharge the area’s waterways. Don’t let this flow fool you. The Drought.gov website states present conditions across Colorado indicate that 45 percent of the population is experiencing drought conditions. For the time being, Boulder County isn’t in one of those areas, but voluntary water reduction measures are highly recommended. By 2050, according to many sources, Colorado will house more than 8.5 million people....

  • Local mailman takes goat escape “by the horns”

    Harry Hildebrandt, Editorial@lhvc.com|Jul 9, 2018

This June, the Gunbarrel Estates area saw a daring escape by five goats that had been helping to mow a local lawn. The electric fence that had been in place failed, and two adult goats seized the opportunity to leave, accompanied by their three kids. The animals were quickly noticed by a couple of bystanders, as well as postal worker Jay Nichols, who rushed to assist the others. Within a fairly short time, the group had managed to return the goats to their original enclosure, but the fence...

    Jocelyn Rowley, Editorial@lhvc.com|Jul 8, 2018

Longtime Rock & Rails volunteer Maddie Frary doesn’t mind being one of the only girls on Gargoyle crew. In fact, working with the boys is often pretty “fun” according to her. “I have many friends who are boys,” the spectacled seventh grader-to-be said. “It’s really not that hard.” After all, it was a boy who convinced her to join up in the first place. “My brother did it first,” Frary said, referring to older brother Alex, another longtime volunteer. “When I was young, it looked like a lot of fu...

For Olivia “Livy” Herring, playing for thousands of fans at Red Rocks as a member of the Boulder School of Rock’s House Band was easy compared to stepping onto the bandstand at Whistle Stop Park with her eponymous band to play for friends and family. But that’s just what the recent Niwot High graduate will be doing next Thursday night, when Livy & the Boys opens for Rebecca Folsom at Rock & Rails on July 5. “When I was performing as a student of the School of Rock, if I messed up no one knew...

It’s the sweet spot for me, to play for the hometown crowds. I’m in the heart of where I want to be.” Though Folsom i...
