Niwot has the good fortune of being Alyson Bell’s family. And, as it is with the best of kin, Bell’s positive impacts are deep and immeasurable. “I like to keep a full plate and keep it rolling” Bell said. And that truly is the Alyson Bell effect. Her personal touch on Niwot’s signature events such as Let’s Wine about Winter, Rock & Rails, and The Great Pumpkin Party, through her organizing and hands-on effort and by ensuring that graphics, printed materials and online presences are emblematic,...

Dear Editor: As long-time Boulder County resident, I had visited Niwot many times, and then in the summer of 2016 I moved here. There are many things I like here, especially the community spirit and occasional fun events. This includes the Thursday Night Music. True it is popular and many people drive here for it. I take that as a compliment that the city is putting on a good event. For one night a week I see no issue with it. Every time I've been, I've only seen people enjoying themselves. So it was with surprise that I read the letter from...
Linda Klueber, Niwot Business Association (NBA) Secretary, and her husband, Chuck Klueber, NBA Streetscapes Representative, have worked together this year to produce Niwot’s annual holiday events, Enchanted Evening and the Holiday Parade. Enchanted Evening is celebrated each year on the day after Thanksgiving. This year it will be celebrated on Friday, Nov. 24 from 6 to 9 p.m. The Niwot Community Semi-Marching Free Grange Band will kick off the holiday event at 5:45 p.m., at the corner of Niwot...
In a deal that helps both IBM and Xcel Energy reach their ambitious renewable energy objectives, the parties announced that by late 2018 a large array of solar panels will be up and running on 54 acres of IBM’s Gunbarrel facility. Xcel Energy’s stated goal is to provide 55 percent of its annual energy through renewable sources by the year 2026 (including both solar and wind with the rest coming from natural gas). IBM’s statement regarding its environmental goals reads that it aims to “procure el...

An open records and open meetings petition filed against Boulder County by Gunbarrel resident Kristin Bjornsen went before a judge for a hearing earlier this month, but the verdict is still out as the judge took it under advisement. Bjornsen first filed a request for records containing Twin Lakes-related documents that have been heavily redacted. Under the Colorado Open Records Act (CORA), citizens can petition a judge to order an entity to provide these records. Bjornsen’s complaint specificall...
The Niwot High School Key Club is working to help with this year’s Holiday Parade for the Enchanted Evening. Key Club President Sara Bovaird said that the group has reached out to the school’s athletic teams, clubs and the choir to be part of the parade on Friday. Along with Key Club Vice President Siri Hvidevold, they’ve gained some ground to help Niwot Business Association Secretary Linda Klueber organize the parade that starts at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 25 on 2nd Avenue. “We aren’t...
Niwot’s Bell, Book, Candle & Coffee store, located at 198 2nd Avenue, has recently expanded its floor space and is adding many new lines of products. Owner, Chris Lucas’s plans are for the store to be Niwot’s department store. The store opened a year and a half ago, but in the last seven months, Lucas has slowly remodeled the retail space to include a kitchen where she brews coffee, and she has filled an adjoining room with some new categories of merchandise. Growing her merchandise lines into...
Standing with the Niwot Residents on Parking This is probably a no win situation for the residents, as even some of the people who manage the Left Hand Valley Courier are the same one in the NBA and NCA. I tend to agree with the residents on using the park for parking. It is close to the businesses, it will not disturb the bucolic residential area. There is a horde driven to these concerts. They are on a mission with all of their camping gear. The car doors slamming, people hailing fare thee well, engines will disturb the residents. The noise... Full story

To The Editor: I am opposed to the parking lot, which will be located along Murray Street, on the strip of land currently owned by BNSF railroad. Reasons for my opposition: The parking lot will change Murray Street from a rural setting to a city setting. Traffic will increase in the neighborhood. According to the Sept. 2016 traffic study done in Niwot (Fox, Tuttle and Hernandez), ten spaces were removed from downtown parking for striped parking spaces and bumper blocks between 2014 and 2016. The study recommended that employees be encouraged... Full story

All shows are at 7 p.m., except for the final show on Sunday, which is a matinee presented at 2 p.m. The play’s premise is a nod to old-time American jazz productions. It follows a quirky, middle-aged musical theater fan who has a running commentary on a fake production called The Drowsy Chaperone set in 1928. The complicated twists and turns of the actors weave together a rousing web of mistaken identities, d...

On Oct 16, LIGO announced its observatories were able to detect gravitational waves created by the collision of two neutron stars. The collision occurred on Aug. 17. The collision, known as a kilonova and similar to a supernova, simultaneously generated electromagnetic waves (light and gamma rays) and a gravitational wave, both travelling at the speed of light. LIGO detected the gravitational wave, while other observatories detected the electromagnetic wave. The collision also produced heavy metals, such as gold, silver, lead and uranium....
Efforts are underway to bring attention to one of Niwot’s most treasured historical gems – the Fire House Museum. It’s a tad too easy to be chatting on a stroll down 2nd Avenue and completely miss the lean wooden structure that sits back from the façades of the adjoining buildings. The Niwot Historical Society (NHS) recently put into motion two efforts – the renovation of the fire house museum building, and the restoration of the building site. NHS has successfully raised the needed funds to...
