Winds gusting up to 65 m.p.h. knocked down power lines and snapped tree limbs as a quick moving front descended on the front range Tuesday afternoon. Power outages and street closures caused busing disruptions for students in the St. Vrain Valley School district, and many area athletic events were rescheduled. The girls soccer match between Niwot and Longmont will be played tomorrow at Niwot at 4 p.m., as will the baseball game against Skyline. Winds are expected to diminish overnight, and the...

The Centennial State Ballet will be presenting The Sleeping Beauty at Niwot High School on April 21 and 22. This marks the 20th season for the ballet, so it’s going to be a big one. For the first time in those 20 years, the production of The Sleeping Beauty will be the entire show. “We’ve done pieces of The Sleeping Beauty in the past, but the full production is a prologue plus three acts and two intermissions,” Lawrence said. “So the full piece is extensive, so we hadn’t taken it on previously....
Marshall Lipps, environmental health specialist for Boulder County, wants residents to know that they will soon start seeing mosquito traps and fogger trucks around the county. With nicer weather approaching, the county will be making the annual effort to curb the pesky insects. “Our focus is to try and target the larval (aquatic) stage of the mosquito before there are adult mosquitoes flying around and biting people,” Lipps said. “That’s 90 percent what we’re doing out there. We do set traps and monitor the adult population and do testing for...
There’s an uninvited guest staying on the Schultz Family Farm. She’s pleasant though and no one is complaining. In fact, she’s drawing a great deal of attention to a small patch of land on the corner of Oxford Road and Highway 287, which Glen Schultz is hoping will become more familiar to the public. Two months ago, a lone female elk jumped into the pasture that holds two male oxen. And she’s stayed around to graze and lounge in the field with her good-natured horned friends, Chester and Cal...

The top one-half of one percent of test-takers in each state go on to become semifinalists, who then go through a rigorous selection process to become finalists. "Dawson is...
Niwot and Gunbarrel residents should be extra cautious about clearing out valuables and locking their vehicles along with making sure their garage doors are down, Boulder County Sheriff’s Department Commander Mike Wagner told Niwot Community Association board members at the board’s April 4 meeting. “We are seeing an uptick in vehicle thefts, along with crimes of opportunity,” Wagner said. “People are having their cars stolen, along with items from their unlocked vehicles or open garages.” Wagner said the sheriff’s department believes ther...
Fellow Niwotions, Having just completed Margaret Coel’s “Chief Left Hand,” it seems those visiting the sculptures and historical markers may infer, incorrectly, that the photograph displayed is Chief Niwot. However, this is his cousin, “No-Ta-Nee” a less prominent Southern Arapaho Bosse. (Photograph UC library Western History Collection, Page 226-e of Coel’s book). Chief Left Hand’s brother, Neva is pictured as the ranking Southern Arapaho present. There are no known photographs of The Great Chief Niwot — perhaps was his plan as many Chiefs...

St. Vrain Valley School District Superintendent Don Haddad opened the bond update and school safety town hall meeting held at Silver Creek High School (the fourth such meeting this month in the district) by emphasizing that for SVVSD, and for himself, student safety was an area of concern long before the recent shootings. Haddad pointed to the “summer of violence” that occurred in Denver in 1993 as the initial cause for the heightened worry over school safety. At that time he was working at a h...

Karla Hale, executive director at the Longmont Senior Center, said that during her previous 16 years at the center, Niwot has only been served on a Monday-Wednesday-Friday schedule. “Mainly what it is really about is having enough volunteers to add on those extra days,” Hale said. “When we add on an extra route, we’re talking so many more volunteers needed every day and substitute drivers for those routes too.” The...

Has Gunbarrel seen its day? These words are reverberating throughout the area, as the forces of change swirled around the historic region. “Violence, we see violence everywhere,” said one community member, who wished to be anonymous. “The name is horrible. I’m embarrassed. Why should I be reminded of it every time I tell my doctor to call in my prescriptions to the pharmacy in Gunbarrel.” Maizey Camarillo, a recent California transplant who has a long career in urban planning said, “I could hardly believe my ears when he said the name. What...
Dear Editor, As a faithful reader of the Left Hand Valley Courier, I always look forward to your April Fool's edition. However, I am very disappointed that my favorite columnist, Warren Piece, did not write his yearly story. So, he may not be a Pulitzer prize winner but who was that Artie Fischel guy and how come he got the front page? Warren Piece is a legend in his own mind and I miss his column. Sincerely, Waiting for next year ***** Dear Waiting, Alas, certain matters arose which diverted my attention from the opportunity to add to your...
Officials from the Niwot Finishing Commission (NFC) have focused their attention recently on the matter of parking in Niwot. The Niwot Fixers League (NFL) and the Niwot Bidness Association (NBA) began plans last year for a 50-space parking lot on a two-acre parcel along the railroad opposite Murray Street. While everything was looking to fall into place for that plan, the NFC has joined the picture claiming that 50 parking spaces will not even cause a dent in the problem, let alone a door ding....
The Courier’s Little Guy (LG) , the former face and some say the brains behind the Left Hand Valley Courier, will be turning 21 on April 1. The Little Guy graced the banner of the Courier for 18 years before an early retirement. That said, on April 1 and throughout the entire month, the Courier is encouraging readers to toast to the Little Guy as they enjoy beverages. “I really do appreciate the cards, fan mail and flowers people have sent already,” LG said. “For future reference, don’t s...
Every cat has its day now too. The parade of neighborhood dogs in backyards, on sidewalks and trails struck many egalitarians as being unfair to a particular pet-loving group. Now, this very vocal group wants cats to be given an outdoor place too. What started as a demure grass roots effort for Niwot’s feline population became a victory for the “under-cat.” The Niwot Catty AristoCats (NCA) officially approved funding for a designated area exclusively for cats. Located at the corner of Niwot...
On Friday, Feb. 15, members of the Boulder Day Country Day Middle School student council and other rising middle school leaders traveled to Chicago to attend the LEAD Conference. Senior Stephanie Reitzig capped off her memorable Niwot Forensics career with a trip to the finals at the 2018 State Speech and Debate Tournament held March 16-17 at Rocky Mountain HS in Fort Collins. Reitzig, who looks forward to attending the University of Chicago next year where she will study history and French, delivered a seven-minute speech on the question "Is Western Europe still at high risk of terrorist attack?" to take sixth overall in the International Extemporaneous Speaking...
Maybe it’s the splendor of the glorious view of the mountains. It could be the peacefulness and beauty of the rural setting. Whatever the case, the vibe in Niwot inspires many artists. The seventh annual Why Not Niwot? Juried Art Show will be tapping into that creativeness by offering a showcase for pieces featuring Niwot. Sponsored by the Niwot Cultural Arts Association (NCAA) and hosted by businesses throughout town, 30 artists will display their entries beginning Friday, April 6, in conjuncti...
When Niwot student Jackson Cloud’s eponymous band beat out Golden-based Thunder and Rain in the final round of the Oskar Blues Battle of the Bands contest last month, it is fair to say he was a little awestruck. At the tender age of 17, Cloud and his blues-infused classic rock combo band outplayed five other competitors to claim the 2018 crown and will perform on the Oskar Blues BolderBOULDER Expo Stage during the iconic race, which commemorates its 40th anniversary in May. “I was surprised jus...
Those heading south of Niwot on 79th Street have noticed a big banner sign that reads “Bob NEEDS A KIDNEY”, along with a website and a phone number. Calling that number will lead you straight to Niwot resident Bob Keesy, and he is, in fact, in need of a kidney. Keesy’s kidney troubles began in the late 1990’s. A medication he had been taking for 15 years, along with an incident of severe dehydration and pneumonia, did irreversible damage to his kidneys. Despite having no family history of kidn...
Boulder County Transportation Director George Gerstle announced last week that the county has suspended the subdivision paving incentive fund. The reason, he said, is due to issues with the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Specifically the timeliness, frequency and amounts of reimbursements the county will receive as a result of the 2013 flood. “Until we have a better handle on how we’ll be reimbursed we want to make sure we’re not over-committing the county budget,” Gerstle said. “We’re trying to be conservative and make sure we’re not g...
In a case that began last year, Gunbarrel resident Kristin Bjornsen is now taking her lawsuit against Boulder County to the Colorado Court of Appeals. Bjornsen’s suit alleges that the Boulder County Commissioners have violated the Colorado Open Records Act (CORA) and the Colorado Open Meetings Law (COML). The issue stems from documents concerning the Twin Lakes area and the county’s use of open space. After many petitions and not getting the information she wanted from the county, Bjornsen filed suit when the documents she requested came in...
The abrupt closure of Powder Keg Brewing Company earlier this month may have been a shock to its Niwot neighbors, but industry insiders have seen the signs of a plateau in the craft beer market for a while. After years of red-hot growth in brewery openings and sales volume, the demand for new craft beer is leveling off and brewers are starting to feel the pinch as consumers increasingly spend their recreational dollars elsewhere. “Absolutely, the market is tightening,” Odyssey Beerwerks’ Jeff...
The Boulder County Sheriff’s Office was notified by the social media site Nextdoor.com that a person(s) had contacted them in an attempt to gain access to our account by posing as a “lieutenant” with the sheriff’s office. Due to the suspicious nature of information contained within the application, Nextdoor denied the request and contacted us about the attempt. A few days later, the manager of Boulder County’s Nextdoor account was also notified of an attempt to start a new Nextdoor account by a person with a different name claiming to be a “dis...
Local robotics Team 1619, based in Longmont, earned a significant honor this month at the Hub City Regional Competition in Lubbock, Texas - the Regional Chairman’s Award. Along with their alliance teams, the team also took first place out of 41 teams at the same event. Since the St. Vrain Valley School District (SVVSD) team was formed in 2004, and dubbed Up-A-Creek Robotics, membership and facilities have dramatically improved. Its beginnings were humble, with the first meeting in a t...
Upgrades to local trails are a few steps closer to being ready for the upcoming warmer weather. Brent Wheeler, with Boulder County Parks and Open Space, said that the key component of the whole project is the Left Hand Valley Grange trailhead, which has been redesigned and rebuilt. The original parking lot was built to accommodate a small picnic area and playground, as well as the ball field, which is leased by Niwot Youth Sports. “This is to provide more capacity for parking for both Niwot Youth Sports and our trail visitors,” Wheeler said. “S...
Niwot Community Association Board of Directors are gearing up for the organization’s annual meeting in April. The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 18, at the Left Hand Grange, 195 Second Avenue, Niwot. All NCA members are invited to attend the meeting; those who are not members can join that evening as long as they live in the NCA’s service area, which includes the greater Niwot area and a small portion of Gunbarrel. The cost for an annual NCA membership is $30. During the meeting, outgoing NCA President Dick Piland will outline...
The sound of music filled the hallways at Sunset Middle School on Feb. 24 as band students warmed up for their District Solo and Ensemble performances. The festival has been an annual event for choir, band and orchestra students for over 40 years — originally held at Longmont High School, but now hosted at Sunset Middle School. Sunset’s band teacher Myron Whisman performed in it when he was in junior high school. The festival format has changed over the years, but the one constant has been the m...
A lawsuit filed against the Boulder County Board of Commissioners and the Boulder County Housing Authority by 10 Gunbarrel property owners will now go to the Colorado Court of Appeals. The suit concerns a 1993 ballot measure that created the Gunbarrel Public Improvement District (GPID), and a statement by county officials that they would match “up to” $1.9 million towards the purchase of open space. To date, the county has only matched $1.3 million, leading to the contention by the plaintiffs that the county still has roughly $600,000 to be...
Kim and Alan Schwarz have racked up thirty some years of odd jobs for their resume. A little of this and a little of that adds up to a whole lot of doing good. When you have kind hearts, some really cool tools, and simply notice that something needs to be done, your hometown is fortunate to have you waiting in the wings. One of Niwot’s stealth power couples, the Schwarzes have made it their second nature to jump in and plow parking lots, cart around 300-pound Left Hand cement chairs, buy h...
Niwot High students flowed out of the school building Wednesday morning just before 10 a.m. to join in the countrywide momentum of teens exercising their rights to free speech by asking for stronger gun control legislation. Student hopes were that by emptying classrooms and being heard, they will bring about speedy changes to prevent the growing wave of senseless tragedies in the U.S. Student organizers Sophia Jones and Lauren McHugh stood with fellow march leaders on the berm at the front of...
Charges have been filed against two juveniles following a Feb. 16 “Safe 2 Tell” report at Niwot High School. Last month, the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office responded to the report, but the school has been unable to report the incident to district patrons due to the investigation. Now that charges have been filed, the two students were arrested on Friday, March 16. Since they are both 16, names have not been released. “Safe 2 Tell” is an anonymous method for students to report suspicious behavior or knowledge of threats made by other students o...
Karen Hannahoe, choir festival clinician at Rocky Mountain Christian Academy’s (RMCA) first middle school choir festival, had some advice for some 470 middle school choir students, “Be grateful. Be humble. Be kind.” The event, which took place at Rocky Mountain Christian Church on March 14, included performances from seven local schools, with critique sessions and whole group activities led by Hannahoe, choir teacher at Nevin Platt Middle School in Boulder. The festival itself was the brain...
Letter to the Editor, Recently, after surgery, I walked downtown, in my pajamas. Did it matter? Not at all. That's one great advantage out of many, to living in a small, quaint town. I happened to grow up in a similarly small town; however Niwot is an infinitely more exquisite paradise. I cannot (and do not) want to imagine it any differently. And yet, as Sarah and Alan Stratton (et al.) pointed out in their Letter to the Editor, Niwot's innocent, serene nature is in danger of being sacrificed to a newer, "larger than life" ideal/lifestyle....
