Fellow Niwotions, Having just completed Margaret Coel’s “Chief Left Hand,” it seems those visiting the sculptures and historical markers may infer, incorrectly, that the photograph displayed is Chief Niwot. However, this is his cousin, “No-Ta-Nee” a less prominent Southern Arapaho Bosse. (Photograph UC library Western History Collection, Page 226-e of Coel’s book). Chief Left Hand’s brother, Neva is pictured as the ranking Southern Arapaho present. There are no known photographs of The Great Chief Niwot — perhaps was his plan as many Chiefs...

  • R.I.P. Gunbarrel? (April 1 edition)

    Nellie Nibnose, Editorial@lhvc.com|Apr 1, 2018

Has Gunbarrel seen its day? These words are reverberating throughout the area, as the forces of change swirled around the historic region. “Violence, we see violence everywhere,” said one community member, who wished to be anonymous. “The name is horrible. I’m embarrassed. Why should I be reminded of it every time I tell my doctor to call in my prescriptions to the pharmacy in Gunbarrel.” Maizey Camarillo, a recent California transplant who has a long career in urban planning said, “I could hardly believe my ears when he said the name. Dear Editor, As a faithful reader of the Left Hand Valley Courier, I always look forward to your April Fool's edition. Artie Fischel, Editorial@lhvc.com|Apr 1, 2018

Officials from the Niwot Finishing Commission (NFC) have focused their attention recently on the matter of parking in Niwot. The Niwot Fixers League (NFL) and the Niwot Bidness Association (NBA) began plans last year for a 50-space parking lot on a two-acre parcel along the railroad opposite Murray Street. While everything was looking to fall into place for that plan, the NFC has joined the picture claiming that 50 parking spaces will not even cause a dent in the problem, let alone a door ding....

The Little Guy graced the banner of the Courier for 18 years before an early retirement. • Why Not Meow Park set to break ground (April 1 edition)

    J.S. Dreymenn, Editorial@lhvc.com|Apr 1, 2018

Every cat has its day now too. The parade of neighborhood dogs in backyards, on sidewalks and trails struck many egalitarians as being unfair to a particular pet-loving group. Now, this very vocal group wants cats to be given an outdoor place too. What started as a demure grass roots effort for Niwot’s feline population became a victory for the “under-cat.” The Niwot Catty AristoCats (NCA) officially approved funding for a designated area exclusively for cats. Located at the corner of Niwot...

  • Why not appreciate Niwot’s art?

    Vicky Dorvee, Editorial@lhvc.com|Mar 29, 2018

Sponsored by the Niwot Cultural Arts Association (NCAA) and hosted by businesses throughout town, 30 artists will display their entries beginning Friday, April 6, in conjuncti...

  • Jackson Cloud Band takes local music scene by storm

    Jocelyn Rowley, Editorial@lhvc.com|Mar 29, 2018

When Niwot student Jackson Cloud’s eponymous band beat out Golden-based Thunder and Rain in the final round of the Oskar Blues Battle of the Bands contest last month, it is fair to say he was a little awestruck. At the tender age of 17, Cloud and his blues-infused classic rock combo band outplayed five other competitors to claim the 2018 crown and will perform on the Oskar Blues BolderBOULDER Expo Stage during the iconic race, which commemorates its 40th anniversary in May. “I was surprised jus...

    Jesse Murphy, Editorial@lhvc.com|Mar 29, 2018

Those heading south of Niwot on 79th Street have noticed a big banner sign that reads “Bob NEEDS A KIDNEY”, along with a website and a phone number. Calling that number will lead you straight to Niwot resident Bob Keesy, and he is, in fact, in need of a kidney. Keesy’s kidney troubles began in the late 1990’s. A medication he had been taking for 15 years, along with an incident of severe dehydration and pneumonia, did irreversible damage to his kidneys. Despite having no family history of kidn...

  • County places hold on incentive program

    Jesse Murphy, Editorial@lhvc.com|Mar 29, 2018

Boulder County Transportation Director George Gerstle announced last week that the county has suspended the subdivision paving incentive fund. The reason, he said, is due to issues with the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Specifically the timeliness, frequency and amounts of reimbursements the county will receive as a result of the 2013 flood. “Until we have a better handle on how we’ll be reimbursed we want to make sure we’re not over-committing the county budget,” Gerstle said. “We’re trying to be conservative and make sure we’re not g...

Bjornsen’s suit alleges that the Boulder County Commissioners have violated the Colorado Open Records Act (CORA) and the Colorado Open Meetings Law (COML). The issue stems from documents concerning the Twin Lakes area and the county’s use of open space. • Local craft beer market shows signs of maturing

    Jocelyn Rowley, Editorial@lhvc.com|Mar 29, 2018

The abrupt closure of Powder Keg Brewing Company earlier this month may have been a shock to its Niwot neighbors, but industry insiders have seen the signs of a plateau in the craft beer market for a while. After years of red-hot growth in brewery openings and sales volume, the demand for new craft beer is leveling off and brewers are starting to feel the pinch as consumers increasingly spend their recreational dollars elsewhere. “Absolutely, the market is tightening,” Odyssey Beerwerks’ Jeff...

  • Gunbarrel PID suit moves to Appellate Court

    Jesse Murphy, Editorial@lhvc.com|Mar 23, 2018

A lawsuit filed against the Boulder County Board of Commissioners and the Boulder County Housing Authority by 10 Gunbarrel property owners will now go to the Colorado Court of Appeals. The suit concerns a 1993 ballot measure that created the Gunbarrel Public Improvement District (GPID), and a statement by county officials that they would match “up to” $1.9 million towards the purchase of open space. To date, the county has only matched $1.3 million, leading to the contention by the plaintiffs that the county still has roughly $600,000 to be...

One of Niwot’s stealth power couples, the Schwarzes have made it their second nature to jump in and plow parking lots, cart around 300-pound Left Hand cement chairs, buy h...

Now that charges have been filed, the two students were arrested on Friday, March 16. Since they are both 16, names have not been released. “Safe 2 Tell” is an anonymous method for students to report suspicious behavior or knowledge of threats made by other students o...

  • Letter to the Editor

    Mar 22, 2018

Letter to the Editor, Recently, after surgery, I walked downtown, in my pajamas. Did it matter? Not at all. That's one great advantage out of many, to living in a small, quaint town. I happened to grow up in a similarly small town; however Niwot is an infinitely more exquisite paradise. I cannot (and do not) want to imagine it any differently. And yet, as Sarah and Alan Stratton (et al.) pointed out in their Letter to the Editor, Niwot's innocent, serene nature is in danger of being sacrificed to a newer, "larger than life" ideal/lifestyle....

  • Letter to the Editor

    Mar 17, 2018

To the Editor: Thank you for your article in the Feb. 21 Courier entitled NCA development scale regarding the Southpaw Commons infill development downtown at 240 2nd Ave. We would also like to thank the NCA for listening to the concerns of 3rd Ave. residents about this development (and by extension, future developments on 2nd Ave.) during their meeting on Feb. 7. In our opinion, the Southpaw development on 2nd Avenue has set a troubling precedent for development downtown that is incompatible with the semi-rural character of “Vintage” Niw...
