    Jesse Murphy, Editorial@lhvc.com|Sep 21, 2017

Residents and visitors to Niwot this weekend will get a special treat if they swing by 8008 Pebble Road. Curtis Jones will be running his G Scale model train in his front yard, an attraction that draws people from all over the area. Named the John Galt Line after the character in Ayn Rand’s classic novel, Atlas Shrugged, Jones has 220 linear feet of track for the trains that are roughly the size of an adult forearm. “I started doing this because we have a pond in the front yard and I dec...

To the Editor: Taxation Without Representation? Thanks to the LHVC for letting people know about recent (radical) changes to the Boulder Valley Comprehensive Plan (BVCP) and Intergovernmental Agreement (IGA)—changes that could greatly affect Gunbarrel and Niwot. Since 1977, Boulder has had four governing bodies — the county commissioners, county planning commission, city council, and city planning board — reviewing changes to the BVCP. During the current BVCP update, however, the commissioners and city council have made three big changes to th...

  • Jazz On 2nd Ave “Fantastic”

    Bruce Warren, Editorial@lhvc.com|Sep 20, 2017

Howard Treppeda, founder and chief organizer of Niwot’s Jazz on 2nd Ave, was more than pleased with the seventh edition of the event, held in downtown Niwot, Sept. 16. “Fantastic, fantastic,” was Treppeda’s quick response when asked how the event was going. The day opened with cloudy skies and cool weather, but Treppeda was not worried. “I feel confident with the tents and the fanbase. There’s a jazz family, and they’re going to come out rain or shine.” As the day warmed up, so did the music....

NHS principal Eric Rauschkolb said scores have hovered above 23 since that year, but this year saw the score tip up to 24. While students received their individual scores prior to the beginning of school this year, the composite score had not been publicized. Vicky Dorvee, Editorial@lhvc.com|Sep 16, 2017

Let them drink water. Beer production was paused by Oskar Blues Brewery so that the brewery’s manufacturing equipment could be used to package much needed clean drinking water for delivery to Texas and Florida hurricane victims. This generous response to two back to back crises is the result of the joint efforts of Oskar Blues, Ball Corporation, and the CAN’d Aid Foundation. CAN’d Aid, a not for profit organization started in 2013 by Dale Katechis, owner of Oskar Blues Brewery, originated when...

Living kidney donor Scott La Point, and the recipient of his kidney, Niwotian Jim Eastman, are both ecstatic to report they’re doing “really well” 10 weeks post-surgery. Given that he’s already riding his bike for distances up to 60 miles, and this past weekend he took on the Pike’s Peak Challenge Summit Hike last weekend, to say La Point is doing really well is an understatement. Kidney recipient Jim Eastman has completed the Pike’s Peak Challenge five times in the past and said he’d love to do it again. Although it’s a little soon for Eastma... Full story

  • County relocates prairie dogs to a new home

    Vicky Dorvee, Editorial@lhvc.com|Sep 15, 2017

For a week, metal cages sat atop each prairie dog mound in the open space bordering Highway 52 and 79th Street. The hope was to capture and relocate 100 black-tailed prairie dogs. Ultimately, 84 critters were apprehended in the sprung traps and then moved to a more spacious location. Each trap was baited with sweet feed, consisting of oats, grains and sunflower seeds, a mixture prairie dogs love. While it compels many of the prairie inhabitants to enter the cages, they are aware enough to...

    Vicky Dorvee, Editorial@lhvc.com|Sep 14, 2017

Yes, it’s a super cool thing to have, but Karen McMeans would have been happy to make you your own masterpiece. “The realization that it’s gone has been really hard” artist McMeans said about the missing one-of-a-kind Left Hand chair she painted. It took her two and a half months to complete, working on her hands and knees at times, with an injured back. Whether thieves stole the award-winning work of art, or the folks taking the chair thought it was abandoned, they used Herculean strengt... Full story

  • Letter to the Editor

    Sep 8, 2017

Letter to Left Hand Valley Courier We are writing in reference to the article in the August 16th edition of the Left Hand Valley Courier titled: “Niwot LID approves funding for Cottonwood Park West open space”. The headline should have read: “Niwot LID approves funding for community area”. The headline as it was published suggests that the property is not private and could be misleading. There is no “open space” in Cottonwood Park West, only private common areas that belong to and are reserved for the residents of CPW and their guests. The prop...

  • Letter to the Editor

    Sep 2, 2017

Dear Editor, A proposal for Boulder Rural Fire Department (BRFD) to “join operations” with Boulder Fire Department is being considered. BRFD serves much of the Gunbarrel area. At the time of writing, it is not clear to me what is involved in “joining operations.” This is somewhat concerning. Area voters have elected to enact taxes to support BRFD financially at what seems to be a higher level than most fire departments, enabling the purchase of fire engines equipped with compressed air foam systems. If “joining operations” amounts to a merger...
