    Jesse Murphy, Editorial@lhvc.com|Aug 18, 2017

Several years ago the Niwot Local Improvement District had a transportation and connectivity study done through Boulder County that identified a need for a dedicated parking lot in or near the business district downtown. Bruce Warren, who participated in the study, said that when parking usage downtown exceeds 74 percent of the available spaces open to the public, it’s time to explore options for a parking facility, and when it reaches 85%, it’s time to act. Anyone who frequents downtown Niwot can attest that often times it is hard to find par...

    Pam Martin, Editorial@lhvc.com|Aug 12, 2017

Along with the growing stressors of modern life, there’s been a corresponding dependence on fatigue fighters such as energy drinks, triple-shot lattes and Mountain Dew. We take supplements to re-charge our metabolic systems, often reaching for quick-fix solutions when what we really need is to rest and recharge. But then, who’s got the time? But without time spent each day in an anabolic state, or what Niwot author and pharmacist Dr. Izabella Wentz calls a state of “rest and digest,” we’re b...

Audrey Lenger and Steve Romano, On Behalf of Plaintiffs Legal Committee|Aug 3, 2017

The sixteen Niwot residents who filed suit contesting Boulder County’s approval of a marijuana dispensary in downtown Niwot are not appealing the State District Court ruling upholding County approval. While disappointed, we value Judge Sierra’s confirmation that “the proposed use is not by right.” Our County Commissioners had authority to deny this land use but chose not to. Instead, they set aside multiple well-founded objections, opposition by 94% of the 500+ public comment letters from Niwot and compelling public hearing testimony. This is...

The Boulder County Fair will see a new series of events this year — Wordsmiths. Webster’s defines a wordsmith as “a skilled user of words,” which could be very loosely interpreted. “I think a wordsmith could be used to describe several different kinds of individuals,” event organizer Janet Fogg said. “We’re including writers and storytellers. Anything written or sung could be included in that.” Fogg belongs to the Rocky Mountain Fiction Writers, a group of local writers and storytellers who...

  • Letter to the Editor

    Jul 13, 2017

To the Editor: This is to thank the many people who came to my aid on the 4th of July. I was the guy run over by the electric shuttle vehicle just north of Niwot Market as the kids were decorating bikes and wagons before the parade. Several strong men responded immediately to lift the vehicle off me and help me out. Thanks to them. The medical crew from Mountain View Fire Rescue were on the scene right away and gave me excellent care, as well as reassuring my wife, Laura, and our family. Thanks to them. An unnamed angel lady swooped in to take...

  • Letter to the Editor

    Jul 13, 2017

This Independence Day I’m reflecting on our Founders’ attempts to reintroduce a radical notion. Simplified, the Founders created a grand experiment to see if ‘We the People’ could govern ourselves through representatives to make our voices heard to create laws, and thus, communities we wanted. Today I’m compelled to focus on one failure of representative democracy that poses an imminent danger to the people of Boulder County – the kind of danger that many privileged people don’t often have to personally face. Hydraulic fracturing is set to beg...
