    Jack Carlough|Jan 4, 2023

Over the course of a season, not many other events mean more to the Niwot High School wrestling program than the Gary Daum Classic. The annual wrestling tournament, previously known as the Boulder Valley Invitational, returns to Niwot High on Saturday, Jan. 7 for the 10th time running under its current title, a name given in honor of longtime Cougar head coach Gary Daum, who passed away in 2012 following a battle with cancer. • Let's Talk About... New Year's Resolutions

    Elise Marylander|Jan 4, 2023

Ok. First, Happy New Year to each of you! This time of year, that statement is often followed by, "Hey, have you made any New Year's resolutions?" Ouch. Should I? Is that a requirement for simply turning a page in my calendar? Most people are in one of two camps: "Yes, I have made resolutions." Or, "No, I don't believe in that." I fall somewhere in between. Certainly, the new year is a good time to take stock and make changes to ensure the "happy" part of the coming year. Typically, I hear: "Yes...

  • Chris Teta Profile

    Jan 4, 2023

I am a father of one girl and three boys, all of whom played high school sports. Julia and Andrew are Niwot and CU graduates, while Matt is a senior at CU and Callan is taking a snowboarding-focused gap year. I have lived in or around Niwot since moving here from Boulder to save $100/month on rent while a CU undergrad in 1988. I used to brag about rent at the one-bedroom Countryside condo being under $400/month back then. I belonged to the local gym, known as Cottonwood Health & Racquet Club,...

  • Galen Scheidenhelm Profile

    Jan 4, 2023

After reading from the sidelines for nearly a decade, I was thrilled to join the Left Hand Valley Courier as a staff writer in the summer of 2022. My previous journalistic experience includes reporting on pressing high school scoops as a features writer for the Boulder High Owl (back when newspaper articles were chiseled on cave walls). It feels good to stretch the journalism muscles after such a long hiatus. I am a proud Boulder native but spread solid roots over a decade in New York City,...

  • Katrina Stroud Profile

    Jan 4, 2023

I moved to Boulder when I was eleven years old from Long Island, New York. Ever since then I've been in love with the mountains, the aspen trees, and the great hiking trails, although it was difficult adjusting to the altitude at first. I graduated from Cornell College in Iowa in 2021 with a bachelor's degree in Creative Writing and Civic Engagement. I've been working as a freelance journalist at the Left Hand Valley Courier for over a year now. The Courier has such a great work environment and...

  • Winter charity drive at the Niwot Market

    Katrina Stroud|Jan 4, 2023

One of the most beautiful things about the holiday season is that it is the season of giving. One prominent local business at the forefront of promoting holiday giving is the Niwot Market, which has always conducted winter charity drives and other fundraising events throughout the year. The Niwot Market has held food drives and sponsored toys for tots during the holidays for years, but this year the focus was different. "This year we did "Rise Against Suicide," which raised money for children...

  • Cioni returning to roots

    Hannah Stewart|Jan 4, 2023

Sarah Cioni didn't set out to be a florist - she wanted to be a shopkeeper. She founded The Painted Primrose Floral Studio in 2001 and eventually began selling flower arrangements out of the Niwot Market. Now, she's returning to those beginnings and taking over the floral section within the Market. "A lot of us in the industry say that the flowers found us," Cioni said. "There's a wonderful sense of accomplishment when you make a flower arrangement." The new floral area will include pre-made...

  • Let's Talk About... Christmas Cookies

    Elise Marylander|Dec 28, 2022

Ok. The holidays are almost over but can we just review one small aspect? I know every family has its traditions. And one of those is often the making of Christmas cookies. You know, the ones where you use cute cookie cutters on sugar cookies, decorate them and then give them to all your friends on a pretty plate with a red bow? It means, although I happily exchange cookies, I have discovered: I fail at making Christmas cookies. Let me explain. I have a friend who makes the kind of angels,...

  • Bruce (Biff) Warren

    Dec 28, 2022

I moved to Niwot in 1975 from Nebraska (did you know that Niwot used to be in Nebraska Territory?), and I knew it was the right place when I went to a Niwot High School football game....A lady in the stands recognized me... because she used to babysit me....in Nebraska. Since then I've been an attorney, a volunteer firefighter, a coach, a swimming instructor, a Sunday School teacher, a band member, a sportswriter, and now an editor. My wife Susan and I have three children and one bonus son, alon...

    Dec 28, 2022

Write a profile our editor said. Really? Ugh, here ya go: I've had a pretty unremarkable, but incredibly satisfying life. Forty years ago the mountains called and I answered by moving from Wisconsin to Boulder. I've been grateful to call Niwot home for 30 years now and it's where we raised two wonderful daughters. That stuff and the rest of what I could list as the facts of my life would straight up make your eyes snap shut. I'm not an artist or a musician or a rocket scientist or an athlete....

  • Vicki Maurer Profile

    Dec 28, 2022

A third generation Coloradoan, I was born in Longmont and grew up in Southmoor Park where my parents (Courier carriers Otto and Arlene Ahlgrim) reside today. Graduating from Niwot High School in the 1980s, I saw Niwot as a sleepy farming community with a few subdivisions housing mostly IBM employees. In November of 1980, I was hired at the only law firm in town, the Law Office of Bruce W. Warren, and have been fortunate enough that even though the firm has evolved to Warren, Carlson & Moore,...

  • Hannah Stewart Profile

    Dec 28, 2022

Born and raised in Colorado, I spent much of my childhood reading, crafting stories and consuming a ton of media-books, film, radio, you name it. At Niwot High School, a stint as an extemporaneous speaker (we had to write seven-minute speeches without the internet) sparked an interest in journalism. I followed this spark at CU, where I majored in communication and minored in both journalism and Spanish. After graduating CU, I stumbled across a reporter's position with the Courier and this...

    Dec 28, 2022

Growing up in a big Air Force family, it was normal to move regularly, explore a new area and make new friends. However, I have lived in the Niwot area for thirty years, the longest I've ever been in one place. I continue to explore the area and I have made many friends. I never get tired of looking at the Flatirons. I attended UCLA where I earned my bachelor's degree in English and then Loyola Law School where I earned my Juris Doctorate and met my husband. My family moved to Colorado from Los...

  • Kristin Alger Profile

    Dec 28, 2022

Well, I'll start by saying that I interview other people, so I don't have to talk about myself...So this is a little rough, but here goes. A Colorado native, I grew up near Red Rocks and have lived in Denver, Colorado Springs and Durango. A five-year stint in Detroit made me realize how fabulous our state (and its weather) is and I returned, settling in Niwot where my dad and step-mother still reside. I always thought I'd be here for a few years before returning to the "big city." That was 17...

  • Leonard Sitongia Profile

    Dec 28, 2022

I grew up close enough to the ocean to have salt water in my veins, but the stars brought me to Colorado in 1981. Grad school in astrophysics didn't bring the stars any closer but I learned a lot about the universe. I worked in a few observatories and labs, retired, and moved from the Boulder foothills to Niwot in 2014. I dove headfirst into the balmy waters of Niwot and found myself in a sea of different kinds of stars: the people who volunteer to make this a great community. I volunteer for...

  • An unexpected Christmas tradition

    Hannah Stewart|Dec 28, 2022

In 1956, Robert Hersh lost his two front teeth just before Christmastime. Now, 66 years later, his granddaughter Ella is missing those same teeth. Hersh made his local paper in Westchester, New York, alongside two of his Woodside School peers, and the family has held onto a copy of the clipping. When Ella, an 8-year-old student at Niwot Elementary School, noticed her teeth were loose, the family was excited. "When Ella was missing her two front teeth, both of my parents sent me photos of [the...

  • Jack Carlough Profile

    Dec 28, 2022

Deciding on a college major was easy for me. Sports have always been at the center of my life and with my baseball career coming to a close after graduating from Silver Creek High School, I knew that I needed to continue being around athletics, just in a slightly different capacity. Writing was - and still is, of course - another passion of mine, which made pursuing a sports journalism career an obvious next step. In the spring of 2022, I emerged from the University of Colorado Boulder with a...

FirstBank announced that the Gunbarrel branch, which opened in June, 1975, will be closing March 7, 2023, due to lack of foot traffic at the location. • December book review: A History of Skiing in Colorado

    Hannah Stewart|Dec 21, 2022

Sometimes I feel like a "fake" Coloradan because I've never gone skiing. But after reading Abbott Fay's A History of Skiing in Colorado provided by Inkberry Books, I have to say that I am more intrigued by the sport. I was fascinated by the book's anecdotes, such as how Mount Werner and Hughes' Run got their names–Buddy Werner was caught in an avalanche in 1964, and Berrien Hughes suffered the first non-avalanche skiing death in 1939. But I mostly enjoyed the book's archival photos. Most p...

  • Niwot Merchants Reflect on Holiday Events

    Deborah Cameron|Dec 21, 2022

With just a few days left until the Christmas holiday, the season of downtown carolers, visits by Santa (and for the past two years, Elsa), holiday markets full of food, crafts, art, and good cheer, horse-drawn carriages and festive parties featuring competitive gingerbread house decorating, is coming to and end as well. We asked Niwot's downtown merchants to reflect on this season, and how the events impacted their businesses. Generally, merchants were pleased at how all the activities brought...

    Elise Marylander|Dec 21, 2022

Ok. We all love the holidays. But how did I miss the memo that says we have to stop our normal lives from November 10 through January 3? Oh, let’s just throw Halloween in too and start with the annual October costume frenzy. This means that for three out of 12 months you put your “normal” life on hold and begin a whirlwind of planning, cooking, and eating for all the visitors. Isn’t that a quarter of a year? Business earnings and projections decide corporate fates in less time than that. And yet, here I am, stopping everything trying to determi...
