  • Hannah Stewart Profile

    Dec 28, 2022

Born and raised in Colorado, I spent much of my childhood reading, crafting stories and consuming a ton of media-books, film, radio, you name it. At Niwot High School, a stint as an extemporaneous speaker (we had to write seven-minute speeches without the internet) sparked an interest in journalism. I followed this spark at CU, where I majored in communication and minored in both journalism and Spanish. After graduating CU, I stumbled across a reporter's position with the Courier and this...

  • Elise Marylander Profile

    Dec 28, 2022

Growing up in a big Air Force family, it was normal to move regularly, explore a new area and make new friends. However, I have lived in the Niwot area for thirty years, the longest I've ever been in one place. I continue to explore the area and I have made many friends. I never get tired of looking at the Flatirons. I attended UCLA where I earned my bachelor's degree in English and then Loyola Law School where I earned my Juris Doctorate and met my husband. My family moved to Colorado from Los...

  • Kristin Alger Profile

    Dec 28, 2022

Well, I'll start by saying that I interview other people, so I don't have to talk about myself...So this is a little rough, but here goes. A Colorado native, I grew up near Red Rocks and have lived in Denver, Colorado Springs and Durango. A five-year stint in Detroit made me realize how fabulous our state (and its weather) is and I returned, settling in Niwot where my dad and step-mother still reside. I always thought I'd be here for a few years before returning to the "big city." That was 17...

  • Leonard Sitongia Profile

    Dec 28, 2022

I grew up close enough to the ocean to have salt water in my veins, but the stars brought me to Colorado in 1981. Grad school in astrophysics didn't bring the stars any closer but I learned a lot about the universe. I worked in a few observatories and labs, retired, and moved from the Boulder foothills to Niwot in 2014. I dove headfirst into the balmy waters of Niwot and found myself in a sea of different kinds of stars: the people who volunteer to make this a great community. I volunteer for...

  • An unexpected Christmas tradition

    Hannah Stewart|Dec 28, 2022

In 1956, Robert Hersh lost his two front teeth just before Christmastime. Now, 66 years later, his granddaughter Ella is missing those same teeth. Hersh made his local paper in Westchester, New York, alongside two of his Woodside School peers, and the family has held onto a copy of the clipping. When Ella, an 8-year-old student at Niwot Elementary School, noticed her teeth were loose, the family was excited. "When Ella was missing her two front teeth, both of my parents sent me photos of [the...

  • Jack Carlough Profile

    Dec 28, 2022

Deciding on a college major was easy for me. Sports have always been at the center of my life and with my baseball career coming to a close after graduating from Silver Creek High School, I knew that I needed to continue being around athletics, just in a slightly different capacity. Writing was - and still is, of course - another passion of mine, which made pursuing a sports journalism career an obvious next step. In the spring of 2022, I emerged from the University of Colorado Boulder with a...

The oldest bank in the Gunbarrel-Niwot area is closing in March. FirstBank announced that the Gunbarrel branch, which opened in June, 1975, will be closing March 7, 2023, due to lack of foot traffic at the location. Kevin Classen, a Niwot resident who is president of Firstbank Holding Company, cited the changing nature of banking brought on by online banking, and Covid concerns. Customers are now able to deposit checks with their phones, and almost all merchants now accept credit cards with the...

  • December book review: A History of Skiing in Colorado

    Hannah Stewart|Dec 21, 2022

Sometimes I feel like a "fake" Coloradan because I've never gone skiing. But after reading Abbott Fay's A History of Skiing in Colorado provided by Inkberry Books, I have to say that I am more intrigued by the sport. I was fascinated by the book's anecdotes, such as how Mount Werner and Hughes' Run got their names–Buddy Werner was caught in an avalanche in 1964, and Berrien Hughes suffered the first non-avalanche skiing death in 1939. But I mostly enjoyed the book's archival photos. Most p...

Those attending talked about their legislative priorities for the upcoming 2023 legislative session, as well as the difficulties of legislators being limited to introducing no more than five bills. Marta Loachamin, Chair of the Boulder County Commissioners, welcomed the guests...

On Thursday, Dec. 15, The Wandering Jellyfish Bookshop (TWJ) hosted "Goodies for Grownups" at Cimmini's Italian restaurant in Niwot, featuring both food and books. TWJ assistant manager Alison Cave said the event was a great success and they hope to offer another book fair in the spring. • Niwot Merchants Reflect on Holiday Events

    Deborah Cameron|Dec 21, 2022

With just a few days left until the Christmas holiday, the season of downtown carolers, visits by Santa (and for the past two years, Elsa), holiday markets full of food, crafts, art, and good cheer, horse-drawn carriages and festive parties featuring competitive gingerbread house decorating, is coming to and end as well. We asked Niwot's downtown merchants to reflect on this season, and how the events impacted their businesses. Generally, merchants were pleased at how all the activities brought...

  • Let's Talk About… Houseguests

    Elise Marylander|Dec 21, 2022

Ok. We all love the holidays. But how did I miss the memo that says we have to stop our normal lives from November 10 through January 3? Oh, let’s just throw Halloween in too and start with the annual October costume frenzy. This means that for three out of 12 months you put your “normal” life on hold and begin a whirlwind of planning, cooking, and eating for all the visitors. Isn’t that a quarter of a year? Business earnings and projections decide corporate fates in less time than that. And yet, here I am, stopping everything trying to determi...

  • Left Hand Laurel - Niwot Community Connection: Founders Pat Murphy, Dawn Server and Eve Lempriere

    Maria Karagianis|Dec 14, 2022

It's morning – the second Thursday in December – and about 50 Niwotians who are over 55 are drinking coffee, eating snacks, listening to two local musicians play their tunes, socializing and – later, playing trivia, at the Left Hand Grange. We're at the monthly meeting of the Niwot Community Connection. It really seems like a great way to connect as well as to build local community. Besides the monthly meet-ups – often with a guest speaker – at the Grange Hall, the group has organized smaller s...

  • Why is community journalism important?

    Bruce Warren|Dec 14, 2022

One of the functions of our local community journalism is to report on governmental actions which may impact the Niwot and Gunbarrel communities. The Left Hand Valley Courier regularly monitors Boulder County government meeting schedules and agendas, and as a result, learned of a meeting among Boulder County Commissioners and legislators that was described as “not open to members of the public.” Since such closed meetings are prohibited by Colorado law, the Left Hand Courier contacted the county commissioners’ office and the notice was changed....

  • Local Artists Abound in Niwot

    Kristin Alger|Dec 14, 2022

Niwot has always prided itself on being a true small town – no big box stores, parades for every occasion, and lots of "mom and pop" businesses. This all adds up to a perfect atmosphere in which local artists can shine. And local art is certainly thriving in Niwot this holiday season. The Open Studios Pop! Gallery celebrated a grand opening during Niwot's Enchanted Evening, Friday, Nov. 25. Twenty different artists working in numerous mediums are featured in the spruced-up space that p...

He had buddies on his basketball team, his Boy Scout troop, his class at Niwot Elementary School and everywhere else. “Back then I don’t think they had the Pee Wee Football they have now,” said Monte’s sister, Jamie Comer Smith. “I believe he would have played football.” That was the mid-1970’s,...
