  • November book review: Cloudbreak, California

    Hannah Stewart|Nov 23, 2022

I don't read memoirs very often, which is a shame because they are so unique and interesting. That's certainly the case with Kelly Daniels' book Cloudbreak, California. What is perhaps most unique about it is the way it's organized. There's a sense of chronological order--the first chapter begins with Daniels reflecting on his childhood--but as the story progresses, we revisit the past alongside him. For example, there's this excellent part where Daniels is describing a sojourn into a...

She added that finding outlets for all that energy can be a challenge, especially given Colorado's summer heat. "In the open space, even at 8 in the morning, she gets overheated very easily. I prefer any place she can step into a creek or lake." Enter Gunbarrel's Twin Lakes, and specifically, the...

Equally wonderful was the process of gathering responses. Most of the research occurred in the town's coffee shops and at first, getting responses was slow and awkward. But the tipping point was when some customers overheard others answering and asked to join the conversation. Ultimately, responses and ensuing conversation were full of...

That's where Eve Lempriere enters the story. A cyclist herself, she reached out to other cyclists and people around Niwot, asking for their help to get...

All of it is finally over – until the next election. Our local poll workers deserve our thanks for protecting our democracy and the right to vote. To an outsider, being a poll worker may seem like an easy job: you sit down all day, direct voters where to vote, and count the ballots. What more can there possibly be? Well, a lot actually. Poll workers, d...
