    Jack Carlough|Jan 4, 2023

Overall, it was a mixed bag of results for the Niwot High School wrestling team at the Keith Kilker Memorial boys wrestling event held from Dec.16-17 in Keenesburg. The Cougars left Weld Central High School 3-4 in duals with junior Gavin Burrage going a perfect 8-0 in the 190-pound class and sophomore Ryder Evans finishing 6-1 at 126 pounds. Those two, in particular, entered winter break as definite bright spots for the young Niwot team. A few other Cougars also enjoyed some success in Keenesburg. Per head coach Bobby Matthews, Moi Carmona...

  • NHS girl's volleyball finishes strong, reaches state semifinals

    Chris Teta|Jan 4, 2023

First-year coach Tony Engel stepped in to take over for Daisha Agho, and took Niwot High School's girls volleyball team to State, finishing 21-9 on the season and 10-1 in league play. That record doesn't show that five of those nine losses came against just two very strong Windsor High School and Thompson Valley High School teams. Engel's daughter, junior Addison Engel led the charge. Named 2nd team all-state at middle blocker, Addison recorded an impressive season statistically and was named Lo...

  • NHS girls basketball still looking for first win

    Bruce Warren|Dec 28, 2022

With three minutes to go in the first half against Longmont High School, the Niwot High School girls basketball team was matching the more experienced Trojans point for point. Niwot junior Molly Slupik made a layup to even the score. But with the teams tied at 18-18, the wheels fell off for the Cougars. Longmont went on a 12-0 run to take a commanding lead, and the outcome was no longer in doubt. Turnovers by Niwot and hot shooting by the Trojans from 3-point range put Longmont up 30-18 before S...

  • Niwot girls swim and dive takes Class 4A crown at Rex Memorial Coaches Invite

    Jack Carlough|Dec 28, 2022

The Niwot High School girls swim and dive team entered winter break on a high note by topping the Class 4A field at the REX Memorial Coaches Invite on Dec. 17. Niwot placed 12th overall, but the team's 244 points were the most amongst the 13 Class 4A schools competing, which included local foes Longmont High School and Silver Creek High School. Jamieson Legh was once again the Cougars' standout as the senior took second in the 100 butterfly (55.87 seconds) and third in the 50 freestyle (23.99)...

  • Student Athlete of the Week: Rose Pacheco

    Jack Carlough|Dec 28, 2022

The term downhill guard doesn't suit many better than it does Rose Pacheco. Her ability to drive towards the hoop may appear reckless at times, but it frequently results in two points for the Niwot High School girls basketball team. Through the first seven games of her sophomore season, Pacheco is averaging a team-best 11.3 points per game. Pacheco's success remains one of the few bright spots of what has been an otherwise difficult 0-7 start for the Cougars. Still, she remains optimistic that N...

  • Niwot High School Boys basketball suffers 3rd straight loss

    Isaac Stephens|Dec 21, 2022

Niwot High School boys basketball faced off against both the Riverdale Ridge Ravens and the Severance Silver Knights this week, losing both games, 71-45 and 66-45, respectively. Scoring 45 points in both games ties for a season low in points scored, while the defense gave up the second and third most points in a game all season (behind 84 points allowed in a win against Denver North). In Niwot's game against Riverdale Ridge, the Cougars were slow to start, scoring just five points in the first...

  • Tough week for Niwot girls hoops

    Bruce Warren|Dec 21, 2022

The Niwot High girls basketball team came out cold against unbeaten Riverdale Ridge Dec. 13, and failed to score in the first quarter, falling behind 26-0. The Cougars got on the board in the second quarter, scoring seven points, but trailed at the half, 45-7. After suffering through a 2-point third quarter while allowing another 23 points, Niwot came back to score eight points in the final quarter, but lost 78-17. The only consolation might be that Riverdale Ridge's next opponent suffered and...

    Isaac Stephens|Dec 14, 2022

The Niwot High School boys basketball team played two games in the second week of the season, one against both the Roosevelt High School Roughriders and the other versus the Silver Creek High School Raptors. The Cougars went undefeated in the first week of the season, but split the games in their second week. Niwot's third game of the season came against Roosevelt on Dec. 6. Niwot won 63-50, moving up to 3-0 on the season, matching the total wins the squad earned last season. Niwot's first...

    Bruce Warren and Chris Teta|Dec 14, 2022

A total of 22 teams from across the nation and 45 individual runners competed in the invitation-only event, where the Cougars were runner-up to the Kinetic Club from Saratoga Springs High School in Schenectady, NY. Team scores were counted based on the places of the top five runners from each school, compared to the other team...

  • Student-Athlete of the Week: Vithal Arya

    Jack Carlough|Dec 14, 2022

After moving to the United States during his sixth-grade year, Vithal Arya was tasked with learning a culture far different from the one he had experienced growing up in India. "It's a culture shock because there's not really middle school, high school, it's just K-12, and that's practically every school (in India)," Arya said. "Extracurriculars don't really matter as much as they matter here. In India, schools are basically all for academics. We're not really big on sports. The only big sports...

  • Niwot boys wrestling litters leaderboard at Wheat Ridge Invitational

    Jack Carlough|Dec 14, 2022

Things are beginning to look up for the Niwot boys wrestling team. Coming off a disappointing last-place finish at the Fort Lupton Invitational, the Cougars rebounded nicely on Dec. 7 to beat a revitalized Timnath High School program, 57-12. Niwot then fell in a dual meet against Silver Creek High School on Dec. 9 but bounced back again the following day in a strong showing at the Wheat Ridge Invitational. Junior Gavin Burrage was named champion of the 175-pound class while both 165-pound...

  • Niwot girls basketball youth shows

    Bruce Warren|Dec 14, 2022

The Niwot High School girls basketball team is very young - and the learning curve is painful. The Cougars hosted Roosevelt High School Dec. 6, and the final score, with Roosevelt on top 87-20, gave an indication of how far Niwot has to go to compete with the best. Roosevelt has a record of 2-1, with the only loss coming against a 5A Cherry Creek team in the opening week of the season. Against Niwot, Roosevelt took control early and never let up. The Cougars were led by sophomore Rose Pacheco, who scored eight points. Sophomore Alex Mounce...

  • Niwot girls swim bests Erie in dual meet

    Jack Carlough|Dec 14, 2022

Several Niwot High School girls swimmers were at their best on Dec. 8 in a dual meet against Erie High School. Head coach Ella Thramann said that many of her Cougar swimmers broke their personal-best times, all leading to an impressive 199-93 win at the Aquatic Center of St. Vrain Valley schools. Lauren Brooks set her best time in the 100 freestyle (1 minute, 41.15 seconds), senior Rowan Lavigne qualified for state in the 50 free (26.36) and Shefali Joshi’s 2:16.82 in the 200 free was close to the state-qualifying time — Thramann believes she...

  • NHS students compete in water polo

    Bruce Warren|Dec 14, 2022

Niwot High School students Jack Klein and Logan Waldron spend 12 to 15 hours a week year-round, training and practicing water polo for the Rocky Mountain Neptunes, a water polo club based in Boulder. Both have similar stories. They started out swimming, but preferred team sports and through watching the Olympics, found the sport. Water polo is often heralded as the toughest sport in which to compete. Players must tread water for the entire game while sprinting back and forth, playing both offens...

  • Niwot wrestling still searching for identity in early-going

    Jack Carlough|Dec 7, 2022

While the Niwot boys wrestling team hasn’t found much success yet, there are still plenty of opportunities ahead. The Cougars currently have only two seniors in Charlie Kidd and Vithal Arya, three juniors and 21 underclassmen. Early struggles are to be expected, and Niwot indeed scuffled on Dec. 3 at the Fort Lupton Invitational, placing last out of the eight teams competing. Sophomore Ryder Evans was the bright spot for Niwot as he nearly took the 126-pound championship match. “He was actually up 14-1 and made a mistake,” Matthews said. “Tryi...

    Isaac Stephens|Dec 7, 2022

The Niwot High School boys basketball season has officially tipped off with a two-game weekend resulting in two wins: a blowout 73-13 win against Regis Groff, and a thrilling 86-84 overtime win against Denver North. The Cougars jumped out to an 11-0 lead against Regis Groff, with Jackson Carano scoring first off a feed by Jerek Funkhouser. Point guard Jack Jarvis, a sophomore, got into the act quickly, feeding Funkhouser and Julian Lettow for baskets. Lettow returned the favor with an assist to...

  • Student Athlete of the Week: Jerek Funkhouser

    Jack Carlough|Dec 7, 2022

It was only game No. 1, but when Jerek Funkhouser scored 27 points in Niwot High School's season opener on Dec. 1, it was a great omen for the Cougar boys basketball team. The senior's career-best output, part of a 73-13 home blowout of Regis Groff, was aided by an all-in team effort on offense. "It was just awesome to see that our offense is playing for each other this year," Funkhouser said. "Most of our buckets were off just easy cuts to the basket and within the offense. It's awesome to see...

  • NHS boys soccer reaches playoffs again, goes 14-4 on season

    Chris Teta|Dec 7, 2022

Coach Stephen Dimit's Niwot High School boys varsity soccer team took its 2022 regular season record of 12-3 into the playoffs again where they bested D'Evelyn High School by a score of 3-0 in the first round, and Steamboat Springs High School by a 3-2 margin in the second before falling to a very strong Northfield High School team 2-0 in the quarterfinals. Despite that disappointing loss it was a great season for the Cougars as they won their conference (4A/3A Longs Peak) decisively with a...

  • Jamieson Legh, Rowan Lavigne lead Niwot girls swimming at Lightning Invite

    Jack Carlough|Dec 7, 2022

New Niwot High School girls swimming head coach Ella Thramann has both veteran influencers and young talent helping her navigate the early days of her first season. On the older side, seniors Jamieson Legh and Rowan Lavigne, in particular, are helping make Niwot's head coaching transition a bit easier. Both have been integral in creating Thramann's team-first culture focus. "A lot of the girls come into swimming and they're scared that they are, one, not going to be as good as the others and,...

  • Cougar girls basketball opens season

    Bruce Warren|Dec 7, 2022

The youth of the Niwot High School girls basketball team showed in the opening games of the 2022-23 season, as Niwot lost to Regis Groff and Denver North. The Cougars stayed with the more experienced Regis Groff squad for most of the game, but came out on the short end of a 50-46 score on Dec. 1. The teams traded baskets during the first half, with Regis Groff holding the lead at the end of the half, 18-16. Sophomore Thalia Almarez opened the second half with a 3-pointer, giving Niwot a 19-18...

The Niwot Youth Sports basketball program is...

  • Niwot girls basketball set for second year under Jon Hill

    Jack Carlough|Nov 30, 2022

The Niwot girls basketball team may be young, but second-year head coach Jon Hill believes the Cougars are well aware of his expectations. In Hill's inaugural run last season, he was fortunate to have five seniors helping him with the transition. Those leaders are now gone, though, and with the 2022-23 season beginning Dec. 1, he'll be relying heavily on a talented group of team-oriented sophomores. "Culture, being in year two, has been a big help," Hill said. "We're not surprised by expectation...

  • Student Athlete of the Week: Zoie Chociej

    Jack Carlough|Nov 30, 2022

Zoie Chociej's dominant senior season has her feeling optimistic that she can continue her softball career in college. The Niwot High School second baseman had highs in batting average (.645), RBIs (33) and home runs (six) while striking out only six times in 73 plate appearances for the fall 2022 season. She was also named the MaxPreps/NFCA National Player of the Week in August thanks to her 10-for-10 start to the season, including three home runs. Chociej said that her success helped put her...

    Chris Teta|Nov 23, 2022

The Niwot High School Unified Bowling Team, under Coach Amy Holle, qualified for the state tournament held November 18 at AMF Belleview Lanes in Englewood. One of 18 teams vying for honors in the third-ever State Tournament since Unified Bowling became a CHSAA-sanctioned sport in 2020, Niwot planned to send a four-person team of three seniors and one junior. Coach Holle, a NHS Special Education teacher, said she was pleased that the team was "good enough to be considered and to be able to...

    Jack Carlough|Nov 23, 2022

"We're fighting for finals this year," Ayers said. "We have a show, we have the girls that are fighting for it and ready for it. I think it's attainable - it's whether or not we get out there on the floor and we do what we know we can do." The Cougars, who were unable to compete in the Blast...

  • Student Athlete of the Week: Nia Terrell

    Jack Carlough|Nov 23, 2022

The admiration gymnast Nia Terrell's teammates have for their senior leader is abundant. As Niwot High School entered its final event at the Class 4A team state gymnastics championships on Nov. 4, all anyone in green and white wanted to do was ensure that Terrell's prep career would end on a high note. Niwot was in the mix for a top-three finish and the Cougars just needed a strong performance on floor, Terrell's only event of the day, at host Thornton High School. Niwot delivered. Freshman...

Ella Thramann, a 2019 graduate of Niwot High School, has been hired to be the new girls swim coach at her alma mater. "Some of my best memories are from swim team at Niwot," Thramann said. She hopes to create a similar environment for her swimmers. "I'm hoping to be a mentor to them," she said, recalling how her coach at Niwot, Sarah Stamp, was a mentor to her. Niwot came into the '22 season after finishing the last campaign 4-6 and were looking for a record above .500. Everything looked promising when they st...

  • NHS volleyball fought hard at State

    Bruce Warren|Nov 16, 2022

Niwot High School entered the state Class 4A Volleyball tournament seeded sixth overall, one spot behind Palmer Ridge High School, which was seeded fifth, in spite of the fact that Niwot had beaten them very early in the regular season. But it was hard to fault the committee assigning the seeds as the higher seed won every time through the first 18 matches of the tournament, except one: 5th-seed Lewis-Palmer High School beat 4th-seed Lutheran High School in the sixth match. That proved to be a...

  • Student Athlete of the Week: Raiden Stahly

    Jack Carlough|Nov 9, 2022

Raiden Stahly, Niwot High School football's only four-year varsity member this season, played his final high school snap on Nov. 4 in the Cougars' finale against Denver North. It was a mix of emotions, but all of them were real for the tight end/outside linebacker. "Going into it I was excited and sad," said Stahly, who also lent his voice to the National Anthem prior to the game. "I saw the end of the season and (my) high school career ending. (There are) a lot of good people on my team and...

    Isaac Stephens|Nov 9, 2022

Niwot High School football ended its season Nov. 4 in a matchup against the Denver North Vikings. In one of their closest games of the season, Niwot had a fighting chance all the way up to the final seconds. Niwot's passing game looked a lot stronger this week, highlighted by receiver Parris Lee who caught multiple passes for a total of almost 80 yards. Niwot's run game was also moving as running back Jesus Rosas strung together multiple long runs for a big day on the ground. On the other side...

In the JV Division, the Bills and the Colts battled it out in the wild card game early in the morning. Next up were the Broncos...

"We knew it would be a really tough game," Dimit said. "They just have so many ways to beat you," referring to Northfield High School, which won the 4A championship last season with a perfect 20-0 record. The Cougars battled Northfield throughout the game, but came out on the short end of a 2-0 score. The...

  • Niwot gymnastics takes third at State, Kylee Schlepp wins individual title

    Jack Carlough|Nov 9, 2022

"They've worked so hard in trying to put it all together and it hasn't [come together] kind of all season," Purcell said. "So the fact that this whole meet overall has just come together [was great]." That hard work culminated in a total score of 176.525 and a third-place team finish at State - Pa...

  • Student Athlete of the Week: LiChen Liao

    Jack Carlough|Nov 2, 2022

Niwot entered the playoffs as the No. 7 seed, while D'Evelyn was No. 26. "They came out pretty fired up,"...

  • Niwot boys tennis' LiChen Liao and Charlie Kirtland embrace lessons learned at state tournament

    Jack Carlough|Nov 2, 2022

Admittedly, LiChen Liao wasn't pleased with the results in the Class 4A boys individual state tennis tournament. He had won the No. 2 singles title last year and his goal was, of course, to defend that title his junior season. But with a 6-1, 6-2 loss to Kent Denver's Will Moldenhauer, Liao's repeat attempt fell short in the semifinals at City Park in Pueblo on Oct. 14. The Niwot High School No. 2 singles player remained proud, though, knowing his full effort was given. "Obviously, I was hoping...

His six regular season goals were third-most on the team, behind juniors Javier Alvira (9) and Josh Ary (10). "After a few games, just getting the experience up there (at...

  • Young NHS gymnasts keep improving

    Bruce Warren|Oct 19, 2022
