Silver Creek swimming defeats Windsor

Winning has become a tradition for this Silver Creek High School boys swimming team, so much so that before their meet against Windsor last Thursday they were more focused on breaking pool records than competing against the other team.

“It was hard to get my guys in the water,” Head Coach Debbie Stewart said after the match. “They were all looking at the record board to see what they could break.”

That wasn’t too much of a leap for the team, considering they did actually break three pool records in route to a 113-72 victory against Windsor.

Stewart said it was nice to finally go against a team that was roughly the same size as her Raptors squad.

“Windsor, size-wise, is a lot closer to us than some of the other teams we have faced,” Stewart said. “It was nice getting a little competition, especially for our younger guys on the team.”

Even though they were roughly the same size, Silver Creek still dominated the meet, taking away first place in eight of the 12 events on the day.

The three pool records broken by Silver Creek on the day were by the 200 Medley Relay team of senior Noah Jepson, senior Sam Willet, senior Lucas Bergeson and sophomore Chis Wingfield; the 200 Free Medley Relay team of Wingfield, Willet, Jepson and freshman Henry Crouch; and the 100 individual breaststroke by Willet.

Stewart said she was very happy with how her team competed on the day, even though Windsor wasn’t exactly the toughest opponent they have face all season.

Silver Creek actually changed some things around in this match, mainly switching up the 400 Free Relay teams. Stewart said she intentionally spread out the teams so senior Blake Sterns could get a qualifying 100 time in for the state tournament. With spreading the talent out, the

Raptors were able to win both first and second in the race.

“I thought about the strategy and spreading them out to get first and second instead of just dominating with one team is better for us as a whole,” Stewart said about the new relay teams.

With the season winding down, Stewart said her team is about as ready as it could be for the state championships.

“We’ve got two more meets coming up,” Stewart said. “We just worked on goal setting and team unity. Our supporting each other in the pool is great, plus watching other swimmers go helps you learn things.”

The Raptors have a home meet against Broomfield on Tuesday this week, then they have a week break to work on things before their final meet of the season against Estes Park.
