In a flurry of July games, Niwot Legion B wins five, loses four

Niwot Legion B baseball played nine games in the first nine days of July, and with only a handful of games left in the season, the Cougars have a record of 16-15.

On July 1, Niwot lost a home game to Cherokee Trail 18-5. Though Niwot got an early start by scoring two runs in the first inning, Cherokee Trail soon jumped ahead after racking up twelve runs in the third inning.

Colton Goldfarb helped Niwot score three of its five runs with his 2-3 performance, singling in the third inning and doubling in the fifth, but was unable to save the game for Niwot.

The Niwot Legion B team lost again to Monarch the following day with a final score of 19-3 after Monarch exploded for 16 runs in the first inning. Quinn Williamson took the loss for Niwot, allowing 14 runs in two-thirds of an inning. He walked three and struck out none.

Although the team managed to score three runs in the second inning, Niwot was unable to reclaim the lead in the five-inning game.

Niwot proved its worth against Lakewood in its second game of the day on Saturday, July 2. The game ended with Niwot coming out ahead with a final score of 7-6 in the six-inning game.

Despite falling behind 6-1 by the bottom of the fifth inning, Niwot Legion B fought its way back to the lead by scoring six runs in the sixth inning. Griffin Mitchell helped the team over half of its runs with a perfect 4-4 day at the plate. He doubled in the third inning and singled in the second, fifth and sixth innings.

On Tuesday, July 5, Niwot took on Northglenn Front Range twice, winning the 14-2 and 16-6 games with over nine runs to spare per game.

In the first inning of the first game, Niwot’s Joey Neve, Trevor Green and Goldfarb belted three RBI doubles, which, in addition to two errors, two wild pitches and a ground-out, earned Niwot an early lead of 8-0.

Niwot’s second game against Northglenn Front Range started out slow, with five lead changes throughout the game. Niwot’s hitters garnered 14 hits, 13 RBIs and 12 runs in the six-inning contest, gaining the lead by the fourth inning. Jake Sims led the offense by racking up six of the team’s 13 RBIs.

Colorado Khaos got the upper hand over Niwot on Thursday, July 7, with 8-5 and 14-1 wins. In the first game, no runs were scored until the fifth inning, when Colorado Khaos pulled ahead with an RBI double and RBI single. After giving up another five runs, Niwot scored five runs in the seventh inning, closing its deficit to 8-5. The team scored on an error, RBI single by Neve and a three-run double by Green, but the rally fell short.

The Niwot Legion B team fell once more to Colorado Khaos later in the day with a 14-1 loss. After scoring its one and only run in the first inning off of an RBI double by Goldfarb, Niwot quickly fell behind as its opponent picked up 14 runs by the fourth inning.

Over the course of two home games on Saturday, July 9, Niwot beat Pomona twice with final scores of 15-5 and 12-2.

Niwot started out the first game of the day strong by scoring six runs in the first inning and remained in the lead until the end of the five-inning game.

In their second game against Pomona, Niwot pitcher Ben Goss was nearly perfect in his five innings on the mound with Pomona managing only one hit and no earned runs. Green was responsible for a third of Niwot's runs by posting four RBI’s throughout the five-inning game.

Niwot Legion B baseball has three games left in the season. The team will play Silver Creek on July 14 and Fossil Ridge twice on July 16.
