Police impersonator arrested

Boulder County, Colo. - On August 29, at approximately 5:43 p.m. the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a person impersonating a police officer that took place near 61st Street and Andrus Road in unincorporated Boulder County.

The victim reported being stopped by a male party wearing plain clothes and a Boulder County Sheriff’s Office baseball cap. The impersonator used a set of red and blue flashing lights in his windshield to stop the victim. Once stopped, the suspect approached the car and asked the victim for his driver’s license and then ordered him out of the car. Once out of the car the suspect ordered the victim to put his hands on his car. The victim asked to see the person’s badge and the suspect said he did not have one. The victim ran and started flagging down cars and the suspect drove off.

Later that evening the victim was near the King Soopers in the Gunbarrel Shopping Center and saw the suspect again and immediately called 911. Officers from the Boulder Police Department responded, but the suspect had already left.

The suspect was later identified as Dominic P. Fell, 23, of Longmont. He was arrested just after 7:30 p.m. and was booked into the Boulder County Jail on the charges of felony impersonation of a peace officer, harassment, and misdemeanor menacing.

During the investigation, additional items belonging to the sheriff’s office, including an old rain jacket, an old uniform shirt, a bullhorn, and old duty gear were found in Fell's vehicle. It was determined that these items, along with the baseball hat seen by the victim, had been obtained from a family member who works for the sheriff’s office unbeknownst to them.
