Firefighters and flapjacks

Boulder Valley Rural Fire Rescue will be hosting a pancake breakfast from 9 a.m. to noon on Sept. 30 at the fire station at 6230 Lookout Road.

Captain Robert O’Donnell said that this event will replace the department’s regular fundraising event.

“We have a history of having an annual spaghetti dinner,” O’Donnell said. “That typically raises funds for our department. It goes to helping firefighters around who have come on hard times.”

What makes this year different is Hurricane Harvey. All of the proceeds this year will go directly to the Cy-Fair Volunteer Fire Department in the Houston area.

Cy-Fair is the largest district in the country, with 11 stations and more than 350 volunteers.

“Instead of raising money for our fund, we thought we’d take everything together and ship it down to the department down in Texas,” O’Donnell said. “I think a majority of the fire departments in Boulder County are either volunteer or a combination, so we know that they could really use this help right now.”

O’Donnell said that one of the firefighters with BRF has a friend in Houston, and O’Donnell’s daughter lives in the Corpus Christi area.

“The people in Texas are wonderful folks,” O’Donnell said. “We have the opportunity now to go down there a few times. But it’s nice to take care of our brothers and sisters, anything we can do to help them out.”

Along with pancakes, there will be coffee and juice and sausages. All of the silverware, plates and cups were donated by Eco-Products, so everything from the breakfast is compostable.

Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for kids, and open donations are also accepted. Keep the ticket, as donated prizes will also be given away throughout the morning.

“The community has always supported us with the spaghetti dinner,” O’Donnell said. “I hope they’ll support us in this effort as well. Every little bit helps, and it looks like it’s going to be a nice day. Come eat some pancakes and get out and enjoy your day.”
