Softball: Niwot bats come up big against Fort Lupton

Jaila Johnson and Reagan Wills combined for six hits, five RBI, and two stolen bases last Saturday to lead Niwot to a 12-7 win over Ft. Lupton. Senior Aleris Law also had a pair of hits, while her younger sister Calista Law knocked in a pair of runs in the Cougars’ fifth win of the season.

Junior Savannah Rafkin batted in two runs with her first triple of the year, tying Johnson for team lead in RBI with 22. She is now hitting .542 on the year, second behind Johnson (.640).

Nikki Sims extended her hitting streak to 16, and has hit safely in each game so far this season. On Saturday, she was 1-for-5 and scored two runs.

On the mound, Johnson gave up nine hits and seven runs, though just three were earned. She also struck out six and allowed three walks.

The week ended on a better note than it started for the Cougars. Niwot got just one hit in a 16-0 loss to Silver Creek last Tuesday, a game in which the Cougars committed eight errors. Their Sept. 28 game against Longmont was postponed due to weather.

The Cougars host Northridge (9-6, 7-3) on Tuesday, Oct. 3, then go on the road to Thompson Valley on Oct. 5. The regular season wraps up on Oct. 6 at Longmont.
