Michael “Big Mike” Holubec, Jr., passed away January 15, 2019 at Boulder Community Hospital. He was 89 years old.
Big Mike was born on May 8, 1929 in Phoenixville, PA to Michael and Anna (Holowenko) Holubec. He joined the Coast Guard and then graduated from college with an engineering degree.
After being honorably discharged Big Mike went to work for IBM as a Manufacturing Engineer, working there for 36 years before he retired.
He married Eileen Croswell Markle on June 17, 1967. Big Mike belonged to First Evangelical Lutheran Church where he enjoyed singing in the choir. He was also a member of the Lions Club, Shriners, and the Left Hand Grange.He was a founding member of the Niwot Volunteer Fire Department and a board member of the Mountain View Fire District and Niwot Sanitation District.
Big Mike enjoyed coaching Little League baseball, gardening, and was a huge animal lover.
He was preceded in death by his wife Eileen; his parents (Michael and Anna); and one sister (Sophie).
Big Mike is survived by his children Michael R. (Hollie) Holubec, Charleen (Dan) Junk, and Maureen (Johnny) Miller; his grandchildren Michael, Makenzie, John, Sabrina, Zach and Colleen; his great grandchildren Emma, Colton, Dane, Cooper, Taylor, Reese and one on the way; his brothers Stephen and Joe Holubec; his sister Helen Holubec; and his beloved dog Pepper.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday January 19, 2019 at First Evangelical Lutheran Church. Interment at Niwot Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to the Longmont Humane Society. Visit www.ahlbergfuneralchapel.com to share condolences.
