All Local, All The Time
This April marks the Left Hand Valley Courier’s 22nd anniversary. Like most things I’ve started, I’ve often wondered, if I had really known what I was getting myself into, would I have done it? This is the type of thing that pops into my head around 2 a.m., when sleep eludes me.
We started the Courier to give recognition to those in the community who might otherwise be overlooked. At its core, the paper strives to keep our readers informed and to create a dialogue about events that can and have changed the shape of our area. From the proposed changes to downtown Niwot to possible fracking in Heatherwood, we strive to present readers with accurate information.
Through features such as Familiar Faces, Left Hand Laurels, Student Athlete of the Week and Out in Leftfield, we hope to introduce those in our community who, through their hard work and dedication, make this a special place to live.
To this end, I’m also happy to announce that four of our reporters, Vicky Dorvee, Dani Hemmat, Bruce “Biff” Warren and myself have won awards from the Colorado Press Association this year. Those awards will be presented at the CPA’s annual dinner on Saturday, April 13.
I can’t say that the learning curve hasn’t been steep at times and, personally speaking, I’ve received a whole new education over the years. Along with highlighting some outstanding people, I’ve learned more about prairie dogs, public utilities, city and county politics, the cost of newsprint, where to put a comma (better known as The Comma Wars and I won) and AP style, than I ever thought possible.
In short, it’s been an incredible learning experience. While the journey is ongoing and not always easy, I guess I’d have to say that yes, it has been well worth it. It’s been 22 years of great work and wonderful people, even if it has meant more than a few sleepless nights.
