The Niwot girls track team continued its march towards the 2019 Class 4A title with a dominating performance at this year’s Northern Conference Championships, held May 3-4 at Everly Montgomery Field. The Cougars finished in first or second in all but a handful of events to end the day with 247 points, nearly triple that of second-place finisher Thompson Valley (95.5).
Sophomore Taylor James was once again Niwot’s top point scorer, with wins in the 400 (56.40 seconds) and 800-meter (2:13.78) races, as well as the high-jump and a relay. Junior Julea Trank also had a big day for the Cougars, with first-place finishes in the 100- (12.72) and 200M (25.83), both with season-best times.
Meanwhile, Elise Gillett posted another top time in 100m hurdles (15.23), and took fourth overall in the long jump (16-3.5).
On the boys side, Niwot took second overall with 134 points, behind Longmont (153). Juniors Cruz Culpepper and Jack Kenkel finished one-two in the 800M, and senior Nolan Johan took second overall in 110mH (15.59).
The Cougars will be back at Everly-Montgomery Field for the St. Vrain Invite and a final chance to qualify for state on May 11. The Class 4A State Championships open on May 16 at Jeffco Stadium.
