All Local, All The Time
There was much excitement in Niwot over the Memorial Day holiday weekend. In addition to many joyous graduation celebrations and a socially distanced jazz concert at Inkberry Books, there was also a music-themed fundraiser event at Niwot Tavern.
In a collaborative effort with Community Food Share and Boulder Symphony, Tavern Co-Owners Tara Kpogoh-Narh and Stacy Szydlek hosted a special Take Out Family Dinner night on Saturday, May 23, with net proceeds benefiting the two nonprofits.
As two musicians from Boulder Symphony played on the patio outside the Cottonwood Square eatery, families picked up their meals, chosen from a special menu entitled "Orchestrated with Love." Choices included Beethoven Beet and Feta Salad, Staccato Chicken Piccata or Tchaikovsky Thai-Spiced Citrus Salmon. The desserts-Chopin Carrot Cupcake or Liszt Lemon Cupcake with a musical instrument on top-were sponsored by DRF Real Estate and lovingly prepared by Joan's Petite Sweets of Niwot. Puccini Orange Cupcakes, a gluten free option, were donated by Mardell Hill's Mar Vlus Gluten Free Bakers. There was even a kids menu-Handel's Hummus and Veggie Sticks and Mozart Mac and Cheese with a side of Brahms Broccoli. Diners were then invited to "Zoom into dinner with your friends and family," which included dinner music by the Boulder Symphony.
The food was plentiful and delicious. One local resident said, "We haven't really eaten at Niwot Tavern after it changed over from Flanagan's. The food was excellent, and we will definitely be ordering takeout from there again, now we know how good it is."
But the fun didn't just end with the food. A coloring book of composers for the kids was drawn by local artist Gillian Marie. DRF Real Estate also sponsored a social media photo competition for the best dressed diner, the best dressed family table, and the best composer coloring, with gift cards to local businesses going to the winners.
"This truly was the local business community working together to create a fun event for Niwot families, and, at the same time, benefitting two wonderful nonprofits - Community Food Share and Boulder Symphony," Deborah Read-Fowler said. "A real win-win-win-win,".
Tickets to the Take Out Dinner sold out in just three days, despite being marketed only on Facebook and EventBrite. In total, the event raised more than $3,000, which gives groceries to 75 families at a mobile pantry for Community Food Share, and allows the Boulder Symphony to admit children free of charge to its annual Kids Curiosity Concert held near Halloween.
"The support from our neighbors in Niwot, and elsewhere, is making a significant impact on local hunger," CFS Chief Development Officer Dina Coates Koebler said. "Many thanks to all that participated in this great event and especially to Deborah Read Fowler, a longtime supporter of Community Food Share. Stay healthy and be well!"
