Niwot grad starts super scooping business

They say that dogs are man's best friend, but everyone knows they can also be high maintenance friends. With the demand for cuddles and attention, dogs also come with responsibilities: grooming, feeding and picking up after them. Humans think of their pets as part of their family, but this last responsibility--picking up their poop--is often one task people would rather not have to do.

For residents of Boulder County, there is a new solution to that problem, Sooper Scoopers. Niwot High graduate Caleb Martinez has been a long-time pet and entrepreneurial enthusiast, and this summer he was able to combine these two interests into his own pet poop-scooping business.

"I figured I'll start this business and fulfill this need," said Martinez. He explained how the business initially started, because he wanted to both work with animals and help people. Along the way, he found that many lawn maintenance companies don't include poop removal service. Drawing upon this knowledge Martinez found his niche.

Sooper Scoopers is still a fledgling business, but it seems to have a promising future. Currently, Martinez is able to take care of all of his clients by himself, but thinks he might need to recruit help in the future. Given feedback from his clients, especially those who do use lawn maintenance companies, Martinez hopes to partner with one such business, with the businesses helping each other help the community.

"Dog poop is not something fun to deal with," Martinez said. "It's [a business] meant to be an ease of mind when it comes to your dog."

The business is still fairly new, but Martinez is motivated. When he isn't working on business logistics, he can sometimes be found doing online college courses. He hopes to transfer to University of Colorado Denver in the coming semesters to further pursue his degree in business.

Martinez said, "I just think that the world we live in right now is really crazy, and I just hope that my business can provide comfort to the people in Boulder County who just don't want to worry about dog poop anymore."

Currently, Martinez largely relies on word-of-mouth and posters in areas popular with pets. He also has recently set up a Facebook Page (@SooperScooperService) and website.
