All Local, All The Time
When talking about the return of the Why Not Niwot? juried art show and First Friday Art Walk, Anne Postle of Osmosis Art and Architecture said it best. "We are so excited to start it up again ... with the Art Walk and to feel like the town is having a rebirth."
Postle, who is vice-president of the Niwot Cultural Arts Association, was ecstatic about the community coming together and having the Why Not Niwot? juried art show, along with First Friday Art Walk, back on track. The NCAA, under the leadership of Postle and board member Michelle Henzel, sponsors the juried art show, while First Friday Art Walks are a joint effort of the NCAA and Osmosis.
This year there is a record-breaking 32 entries in the juried art show. "Every year, more and more people are taking the time and interest to feature Niwot in their art." Postle said. "Every year we get new artists we didn't know about who explore Niwot in painting."
The artwork is displayed in 11 locations around downtown Niwot and in Cottonwood Square. As with past years, people can vote for their favorite painting.
Ballot passports are available at any of the 11 locations. To vote for your favorite piece of art, you need to go to all locations and have your passport stamped. Once completed, the passport votes will be tallied for the People's Choice Award. Voting continues through Aug. 31
In the previous years, as many as 300 passports have been issued. Cash prizes are awarded to the winning artists, and those completing their passports will be eligible for a drawing for a print of the winning artwork.
The paintings have already been judged. This year's judges are Mary Williams of Mary Williams Fine Art, NCAA board member Alyson Bell of Tool Studios, and Lisa Rivard, a Niwot artist and illustrator. First, second and third place winners, along with the People's Choice Award will be announced on Sept. 3 at Osmosis during the First Friday Art Walk.
This is the ninth year for the juried art show and the 11th year for the First Friday Art Walk.
As for First Fridays, Postle said that there will be food, art and music scattered between downtown and Cottonwood Square. Not only is it a fun time, but Postle said much of Osmosis' sales for the month occur on First Friday. It also brings people into the restaurants and shops that are open.
Overall, Postle is thrilled that Niwot is back, and the community is here to support everyone.
