New England favorite makes long-awaited return to Niwot

Summer in Niwot hasn't been quite the same since Lobster Bash left 2nd Avenue, but the late, lamented community feast is making a comeback. On July 31, the Niwot Business Association is hosting the inaugural Lobster Fest, which "takes it up a notch," according to NBA treasurer Mary Coonce, one of the event's organizers.

"Lobster Bash was my first exposure to Niwot," she said. "I was living in Boulder, and used to ride my bike out here, and I would go every year. It's what made me want to live in Niwot."

Coonce's fond memories of the event were shared by NBA vice-president Deborah Read Fowler and former NBA secretary Linda Klueber, so the three decided to revive it, but with a few twists.

"The Lobster Bash used to be, they just provided an ear of corn and a lobster, and then everybody brought all their own stuff," Coonce said. "And we decided this year, we've got a great beer building in Whistle Stop Park, let's sell beer and wine and specialty cocktails out of that, and provide everything for people, so they can just come and enjoy the whole experience."

For the fest, "everything" starts with a complimentary cocktail, and then comes the namesake dish, plus potatoes, corn, baked beans, rolls, or "the classic New England lobster dinner," as Coonce termed it.

Dessert is designer cookies and ice cream. There is also a special menu and toy for kids, plus all guests will receive a bib and souvenir glass.

While drinking and dining, guests will be treated to a concert by local acts House Blend Band and Tim Stiles. They will also be able to place bids in a silent auction, featuring "fun items" from many local vendors. Proceeds will benefit Niwot Youth Sports, now in its sixth decade of providing local opportunities for team athletics.

Other sponsors of the event include Niwot Wheel Works, Porchfront Homes, Seven Wealth, Colorado Landmark Realtors, and Debora Read Fowler. The Niwot LID also contributed funds for the event.

"I am really looking forward to bringing this back to Niwot," Coonce said. "Whistle Stop Park is such a great Niwot asset, and we wanted to put a little spotlight on it."

Lobster Fest is July 31 from 4-8 p.m. at Whistle Stop Park (Murray St. & 1st Ave.) Tickets are $60 per adult and $20 for children. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit niwot.com/events.
