All Local, All The Time

Event season starts for Niwot Community Association

The Niwot Community Association’s (NCA) monthly meeting on Wednesday, May 4, covered a multitude of timely issues and events ranging from the latest on the Boulder Library District to the organization’s array of upcoming events.

Boulder Library District update

The NCA has been keeping close tabs on the possibility that a Boulder Public Library District could potentially include Niwot in its scope. In late April, the Boulder City Council declared it saw “no path forward to reconcile with the Boulder County Commissioners on a library resolution.” As a result, the Boulder Library Champions, which has promoted formation of a library district, is commencing to petition the measure onto the 2022 fall ballot, a plan which had been tabled early on.

In order to meet deadlines for the measure to be put on the ballot, the Boulder Library Champions completed the new wording and boundary map which would substantially exclude most of Niwot. Essentially, apart from the industrial park on Highway 52 and area 6 (Gunbarrel Estates and the Homestead subdivisions) (https://secureservercdn.net/198.71.233.30/4ab.48e.myftpupload.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/NCA-Service-Areas.jpg) of the Niwot Community Association, Niwot proper has been eliminated from the discussion of the Boulder Library District.

Niwot LID

Two funding requests for the NCA were approved by the LID at the May 3 meeting; additional safety cones ($825) for the road crew, along with funds for the 4th of July Parade ($3,125 for the general event and another $1,025 for signage for the new parade start location on Meadowdale Drive).

Events season begins

Clean Up Day on May 21

On Saturday, May 21, from 8 a.m. to 12 noon, NCA members may head to Niwot High School to drop off up to two standard pickup loads of items they no longer want, free of charge. Members may bring additional items for $25 a load. The cost is $40 for non-member drop offs. The event came about to help residents with their spring clean-up efforts and to be sure harder to dispose of items are diverted from landfills.

Acceptable items include Styrofoam, small electronics, paint, yard waste, scrap metal and trash. For a small fee, community members may drop off larger electronics such as LCD televisions ($10), and mattresses and box springs ($15 each). For additional specifics and a list of what will not be accepted, visit https://niwot.org/2022-niwot-clean-up-day/.

Volunteers from Scout Troops 161 and 161A, along with members of the Niwot High School Band have committed to assisting with the event. The NCA is also looking for additional volunteers to help out.

Slepicka Tractor Open House on June 11

A 2022 inaugural NCA event will be held in observance of Niwot’s rural heritage. On Saturday, June 11, the Jerry and Marsha Slepicka property at 6675 N. 79th Street will be open for the community to view the family’s collection of vintage tractors up close. The NCA is looking for volunteers for 90-minute shifts to help with the event.

Niwot Jazz Fest on June 25

The NCA will be providing road crew assistance with the setup and break down of the Niwot Jazz Festival, a daylong event sponsored by the Niwot Cultural Arts Association.

NCA Rock and Rails tip jar on June 30

Each Rock and Rails summer concert offers an opportunity for not-for-profit organizations in the community to raise funds by collecting money from the attendees in tip jars during the weekly musical event. The NCA is the designated recipient of tip jar donations on Thursday, June 30. The NCA board is looking for volunteers to help with collecting tips as well as helping with setup and break down that afternoon and evening.

4th of July Parade planning status

NCA director of event planning Kim Hawksworth reported that the event’s bike decorations have been obtained. In addition, road closure permits have been applied for and an updated operations plan has been submitted for the new parade start location at the corner of Niwot Road and Meadowdale Drive. The new lineup area will avoid congestion in Cottonwood Square during the pancake breakfast and the Niwot run finish line, now in its second year.

NCA Vice-President Julie Breyer reported she has received many positive responses from past participants and a lot of new applications from potential participants from outside Niwot who would like to join in this year’s parade.

A proposal was passed by the board that the NCA will pay for the taxes and shipping costs for the new parade signage for up to $500.

Boulder County Commissioners Candidates’ Forum on a date to be determined

The NCA traditionally hosts a “meet the candidates’ forum” for the entire community at the Left Hand Grange. In the upcoming primary election on June 28, there are two Democratic candidates, Ashley Stolzmann and Elaina Shively, running for the District 3 commissioner’s seat currently held by Matt Jones, and Limbach reported he is in the process of finding a date for the forum that works well for both of those contenders.

The next NCA meeting will be held from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, June 1, at the Mountain View Fire Rescue Building, 8500 Niwot Road.
