All Local, All The Time

Five Kingdoms comes to Niwot

Niwot will host the next Five Kingdoms dinner to benefit the newly re-formed Slow Food chapter in Boulder.

Brandon Pitcher launched 5 Kingdom dinners over 15 years ago to highlight a new approach to food, by focussing on protozoa, algae, plants, animals and fungi. Pitcher’s philosophy is that by eating these five food groups, we are creating an ecosystem of sustainable food on earth, which is better for the planet, and better for our health.

Pitcher hosts regular dinners with an educational focus and to also benefit non–profit organizations that align with his philosophy.

On May 21, a Five Kingdoms dinner will be presented by Slow Food Boulder County, a Colorado non-profit corporation, produced by Pitcher and crafted by Fed Boulder. Slow Food board member and Niwot resident Jodie Popma said, “We are super excited for the event to be in Niwot.”

The dinner will feature the funghi kingdom - where each course will feature locally grown mushrooms, and local mushroom growers will speak at the event. The array of speakers include Jake Plummer from MycoLove, Patrick Balcom from Farow Restaurant, Justin Killing from MycoCosm Mushrooms, Charlie Mann from Carbon Culture, and Zach Hedstrom from Boulder Mushroom.

The event is sponsored by Dryland Distillers from Longmont, which will provide hand crafted cocktails. In addition, there will be a silent auction, with donated items including a private dinner with Patrick Balcom from Farow, gift certificates to 24 Carrot Bistro and Blackbelly Market, farm dinners to events with Whistling Boar and GB Culinary, and mushroom-themed gift baskets.

The event will take place at the Left Hand Grange in old town Niwot on May 21 from 6 to 10 p.m. and tickets are available for purchase online.
