All Local, All The Time
The Niwot Community Association (NCA) Board returned to the Mountain View Fire Protection District conference room for its monthly meeting on June 1st. It had not been possible to meet at that location since early in the pandemic.
The annual Niwot Cleanup Day was held on an unusually chilly May 21st. Organized by Board member John Barto, this event allows NCA members to drop off a variety of types of household and yard materials at the temporary site set up for the event in the Niwot High School parking lot.
It is free for NCA members, which is a good deal, since it would cost more than the annual membership cost to drop off at Ecocycle and other locations. Barto has built a smooth operation on top of the work done by past NCA board member Tom Sesnic, and the cleanup effort went smoothly.
The NCA agreed to donate $300 to the Superior Historic Commission, which lost its museum in the Marshall Fire.
A new event for the NCA is coming up soon. The Slepicka tractors will be on display during an open house on Saturday, June 11, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. You’ve probably seen the tractors in their yard at 6675 N. 79th St. in Niwot. This is the first time that Jerry and Marsha Slepicka have held an open house in order to show and tell all the tractors. See the NCA website at http://www.niwot.org for details, including where to park
The NCA’s premier event of the year, the 4th of July parade is proceeding according to plan thanks to the tireless work of board members Julie Nelson-Breyer and Kim Hawksworth. This year, it will return to a pre-pandemic parade, but with a few changes.
Entrants will stage on Meadowdale this year, in order to relieve congestion in Cottonwood Square’s parking lots, which also hosts a pancake breakfast, band concert, and fun run finish line. From there, the route will proceed to 2nd Avenue, as usual. Bike decorating will take place in the Bank of Estes Park parking lot, as has been the custom. This year, Niwot Wheel Works will be providing bike inspections. More volunteers are needed for this event, so if you’d like to help, please email [email protected]
The 4th of July Grand Marshall this year will be publicly announced at the end of June.
Look for the National Night Out event on August 2, the first Tuesday of the month. This is an annual NCA event hosting representatives of the Mountain View Fire Protection District and the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office.
Liz Marr, the NCA’s Director for Subdivision Roads and member of the Subdivision Paving Coalition, continues to work with Boulder County officials to make progress on resolving subdivision road repairs and long-term maintenance. Roads continue to deteriorate in the Niwot subdivisions while this issue remains unresolved.
Riki Frea, Niwot Youth Sports Director of Marketing, has been invited to speak at the next board meeting about a fundraising effort to construct a new building to be located at NYS’s Hangge Fields at Monarch Park. The project will include permanent restrooms, permanent concession facilities and a meeting room.
An annual NCA project is currently in the planning stage. The mural in the underpass under Niwot Road, on the LoBo Trail, is maintained by the NCA. It is a high priority to perform maintenance and apply a protective coating in order to preserve this remarkable mural. Board member Mark Brigham is leading this project. The NCA will benefit from a tip jar at Rock & Rails this summer to help fund the maintenance.
The next NCA board meeting will be held July 6, (the first Wednesday of each month) at 7 p.m. in the meeting room at the Mountain View Fire Protection District Station #4. NCA members are always welcome to attend board meetings.
