All Local, All The Time

Traditions in jewelry

One might say that the jewelry business is in Jan Kahl's blood. Her father was a jeweler in Boulder and she eventually took up the mantle; now she and her son run Niwot Jewelry and Gifts on 2nd Avenue and have for the past twenty-six years.

"This is a fun business," Kahl said with a smile. "When people are buying jewelry or getting something fixed, it's a happy occasion."

In addition to selling and designing an array of jewelry-everything from sterling silver to platinum-the shop also specializes in repairs. This is something Kahl is especially proud of as many places do not do repairs anymore. Whether it's teapots, watches or even the occasional horse bridle, they pride themselves on their ability to service the Niwot community.

The shop itself reflects this positive atmosphere. Large display windows fill the store with natural light, illuminating the various cases. Instrumental jazz plays quietly in the background, making the shopping experience feel relatively laid back and welcoming. Behind one set of display cases, a large clock mural is eye-catching, almost reminiscent of the gilded age. In the back of the space is the small repair workshop, walls covered with vintage-looking clocks, and drawers with spare parts-almost reminiscent of Gepetto's workshop in Pinocchio.

This is just part of what makes the space so inviting. Kahl's enthusiasm is infectious and their willingness to help turn visions into reality is heartwarming.

"We love fixing things for people, and reusing them," she said. "So if you have an old ring from grandma and your mother's old ring, we can take them together that, previously, you might not have ever worn, and it has a lot of meaning."

Her advice to customers-shop around, shop local and go in person. Jewelry often has memories, and to be part of the design process, to look at and try on the piece in person is important.

Niwot Jewelry and Gifts is also looking for additional assistance.
