All Local, All The Time

Local Musician of the Week: Michael Holubec

It was the early 2000s and six men thought of forming a band. That day, Last Men On Earth (LMOE) was born–even though it was one coin flip away from being called "Kamel Toe."

One of those men was Michael Holubec. A born and raised Niwotian, he's stuck around the area and performs with LMOE as often as possible.

"We were all a little older, we all had kids, we wanted to do [professional music] on our terms," said Holubec. "It's cool to do something in your spare time with your friends."

As a young child, Holubec loved listening to music, and when he saw KISS for the first time, he said it was like seeing Superman playing the guitar. He was hooked by the music, enthralled by performance, and he wanted part of it.

He picked up the guitar and took classes, and later he and some school friends began playing at parties around Niwot, and eventually in bars and other venues. While in high school, Holubec took a marketing class through The Career Elevation and Technology Center (formerly known as Career Development Center, or CDC). Some peers were enrolled in a radio and broadcasting class and asked Holubec and his band to perform.

"I've played music in this town since I was sixteen. It was pretty cool," he said.

Holubec has been a fixture in the Niwot and Northern Colorado Band community since the 1980s. Most of the bands, he said, tend to be tribute bands, whereas LMOE plays a variety of covers–sometimes even 25 different bands per night. Each member comes in with some of their favorites, so the band has more than 100 songs in rotation. He explained that LMOE was founded out of a desire to play festivals and at local venues, for the fun of music and how it brings communities together.

"It's so awesome to be able to play in my hometown to all my neighbors, with all the people I grew up with," Holubec said.

For him, music is cool and a way to connect with friends while making new ones. He said that he and the band are looking forward to playing at more venues and sharing those nights with the audience.

Holubec and LMOE will be busy for the rest of the summer and into the fall. Some notable performances will include Aug. 4 at Rock & Rails, Sept. 2 at Buffalo Rose in Golden, Sept. 24 at the Autumn Gold Festival in Estes Park and Oct. 14 at BootStrap Brewery.
