All Local, All The Time
This week's Student Athlete of the Week is Niwot Senior Softball player Zoie Chociej, who was named Max Prep's first national softball player of the week for the 2022-2023 season. According to the organization's announcement, the Niwot senior was chosen based on her accomplishment of going 10-for-10 at the plate, including two home runs during the week of August 15-21.
"It felt amazing," she said. "It makes me feel good about all the hard work I put in after years of coaches not believing in me. It made everything seem worth it." Choiciej said she found out about it when her mom called her in tears.
Choiciej has been a member of the team since playing as a freshman, and she plays club ball throughout the rest of the year when not playing for NHS. While Chociej, unfortunately broke her streak this past weekend, that fact didn't dull the brightness of her remarkable accomplishment. She was also still able to contribute to the team's performance during what was a difficult weekend of play.
Coach Bobby Matthews comments on her accomplishment. "She's has had a remarkable start to her Senior season. Starting out the season 13 for 13 was amazing. In this. sport you will not remain perfect at the plate and really for her to have a 'bad Game' at the plate and then turn right around and go 3-3 in the second game shows where she is at mentally. To be recognized as the NFCA (National Fastpitch Coaches Association) is an amazing honor. Being the first National player of the week shows what a great start she is having.
